Data from: Population collapse of habitat-forming species in the Mediterranean: a long-term study of gorgonian populations affected by recurrent marine heatwaves

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Understanding the resilience of temperate reefs to climate change requires exploring the recovery capacity of their habitat-forming species from recurrent marine heatwaves (MHWs). Here, we show that, in a Mediterranean highly enforced Marine Protected Area established more than 40 years ago, habitat-forming octocoral populations that were firstly affected by a severe MHW in 2003 have not recovered after 15 years. Contrarily, they have followed collapse trajectories that have brought them to the brink of local ecological extinction. Since 2003, impacted populations of the red gorgonian <i>Paramuricea clavata</i> (Risso, 1826) and the red coral <i>Corallium rubrum</i> (Linnaeus, 1758) have followed different trends in terms of size structure, but a similar progressive reduction in density and biomass. Concurrently, recurrent MHWs were observed in the area during the 2003-2018 study period, which may have hindered populations recovery. The studied octocorals play a unique habitat-forming role in the coralligenous assemblages (i.e., reefs endemic to the Mediterranean Sea home to approximately 10% of its species). Therefore, our results underpin the great risk that recurrent MHWs pose for the long-term integrity and functioning of these emblematic temperate reefs.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Cascading impacts of earthquakes and extreme heatwaves have destroyed populations of an iconic marine foundation species

<p>Aim: Ecologists traditionally study how contemporary local processes, such as biological interactions and physical stressors, affect the distribution and abundance of organisms. By comparison, biogeographers study the distribution of the same organisms, but focus on historic, larger-scale processes that can cause mass mortalities, such as earthquakes. Here we document cascading effects of rare biogeographical (seismic) and more common ecological (temperature-related) processes on the distribution and abundances of coastal foundation species.</p> <p>Location: Intertidal wave-exposed rocky reefs around Kaikōura, New Zealand, dominated by large, long-lived, and iconic southern bull kelps (<i>Durvillaea antarctica</i> and <i>Durvillaea willana</i>).</p> <p>Methods: In November 2016, a 7.8 Mw earthquake uplifted the coastline around Kaikōura by up to 2 m, and a year later the region experienced the hottest summer on record. Extensive sampling of intertidal communities over 15 km coastline were done shortly after the earthquake and heatwaves and 4 years after the earthquake.</p> <p>Results: <i>Durvillaea</i> lost 75% of its canopy to uplift and the heatwaves reduced canopies that had survived the uplift by an additional 35%. The survey done four years after the earthquake showed that <i>Durvillaea</i> had not recovered, and that the intertidal zone in many places now was dominated by small turfs and foliose seaweed.</p> <p>Main conclusions: Cascading impacts from seismic uplift and heatwaves have destroyed populations of <i>Durvillaea</i> around Kaikōura. Surviving smaller and sparser <i>Durvillaea</i> patches will likely compromise capacity for self-replacement and lower resilience to future stressors. These results are discussed in a global biogeographical-ecological context of seismic activity and extreme heatwaves, and highlight that these events, which are not particularly rare in a geological context, may have common long-lasting ecological legacies.</p>

Global Atlas of Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) as detected from ESA CCI SST 1°x1° covering 1982-2021

<p>Daily records of&nbsp;Marine Heatwaves (MHW) intensities&nbsp;and categories resulting from&nbsp;detection conducted on European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) satellite product, regridded to a 1&deg;x1&deg; regular grid, covering the period 01/01/1982-31/12/2021.</p> <p>The MHW detection has been carried out via Hobday&#39;s method (Hobday et al. 2016), with the following parameters:<br> At a pixel-wise level a MHW event is detected when the SST value exceeds:<br> -&nbsp;the 90th percentile threshold over climatology reference for 5 consecutive days at least, where<br> - the climatology reference has been computed as the daily average over the whole period (1982-2021).</p> <p>The <strong>mhw</strong> field describes the intensity of anomaly [&deg;C]&nbsp;of&nbsp;MHW events detected. The <strong>cat </strong>field&nbsp;gives information on the category of the events detected (1=moderate, 2=strong, 3=severe, 4=extreme). Definition of categories can be found in&nbsp;Hobday et al. The effect of simulated marine heatwaves on green-lipped mussels, Perna canaliculus: A near-natural experimental approach

<p>Marine heatwaves (MHW) are projected for the foreseeable future, affecting aquaculture species, such as the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (<em>Perna canaliculus</em>). Thermal stress alters mussel physiology highlighting the adaptive capacity that allows survival in the face of heatwaves. Within this study, adult mussels were subjected to three different seawater temperature regimes: 1) low (sustained 18&deg;C), 2) medium MHW (18 - 24&deg;C, using a +1&deg;C per week ramp) and high MHW (18 - 24&deg;C, using a +2&deg;C per week ramp). Sampling was performed over 11 weeks to establish the effects of temperature on <em>P. canaliculus</em> survival, condition, specific immune response parameters, and the haemolymph metabolome. The transient 25.5-26.5&deg;C exposure resulted in 61% mortality, with surviving animals showing a metabolic adjustment within the aerobic energy production system, enabling the activation of molecular defence mechanisms. Utilisation of immune functions were seen within the cytology results where temperature stress affected the percentage of superoxide-positive haemocytes and haemocyte counts. From the metabolomics results an increase in antioxidant metabolites was seen in the high MHW survivors, possibly to counteract molecular damage. In the high MHW exposure group, mussels utilised anaerobic metabolism in conjunction with aerobic metabolism to produce energy, to uphold biological functions and survival. The effect of exposure time was mainly seen on very long-, and long chain fatty acids, with increases observed at weeks seven and eight. These changes were likely due to the membrane storage functions of fatty acids, with decreases at week eleven attributed to energy metabolism functions. This study supports the use of integrated analytical tools to investigate the response of marine organisms to heatwaves. Indeed, specific metabolic pathways and cellular markers are now highlighted for future investigations aimed at targeted measures. This research contributes to a larger program aimed to identify resilient mussel traits and support aquaculture management.</p>

Heatwave tolerance of a marine polychaete (Hediste diversicolor): physiological and molecular data archive

<p>The aim of this work was to&nbsp;test&nbsp;the effect of long-lasting heatwaves on the intertidal polychaete <em>Hediste diversicolor</em>&nbsp;(24 &ordm;C <em>vs</em> 30 &ordm;C for a month).&nbsp;We&nbsp;analysed&nbsp;the whole-body proteome and&nbsp;carried out&nbsp;fatty acid analysis after 28 days of exposure and then&nbsp;estimated&nbsp;cumulative survival and&nbsp;upper thermal tolerance limits (after 30 days of exposure).
