Meta-analysis and gender classification of 914 national and international surveys in six European countries (2000-2023)

Gender codification of 412 national (general) and European Parliament elections in six European countries (2003-2021)
<p>This dataset has been produced by applying the Manifesto Gender Analysis (MGA) codebook to 412 national (general) and European Parliament elections in the six countries participating in the UNTWIST project (Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK) from 2003 to 2021.</p> <p> The Manifesto Gender Analysis coding procedure, developed by WP4 of the UNTWIST consortium, aims to analyse gender-related content in party manifestos. It relies on existing manifestos collected by MARPOR and EM projects from 2003-2021 in six national contexts: Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The process involves splitting manifestos into quasi-sentences, coding them based on a scheme inspired by previous projects and feminist typology, and completing an expert survey. This method ensures comprehensive analysis and potential scalability through computational methods. </p> <p>The coding procedure involves a series of essential steps, divided in two main activities: the classification of manifestos’ quasi-sentences, and the completion of a survey dedicated to more general concepts which can be gauged by evaluating the content of the entire documents. In the latter case, then, the unit of measure of each coder consists in the manifesto document, whereas in the former the units of measure are quasi-sentences - i.e., arguments denoting a verbal expression of a political idea or issue. Coders are instructed to split sentences containing multiple arguments into quasi-sentences and ensure that each quasi-sentence encapsulates a single political idea or issue. </p> <p>Once the manifestos are split into said units, coders classify the arguments following the MGA coding scheme. The coding scheme (MGA) consists of 5 domains and 25 coding categories, covering various aspects of gender-related issues. Each domain includes an "other" category for relevant statements that do not fit precisely into the defined categories. Apart from coding categories related to specific themes, the coding scheme then includes additional dimensions. The classification process consists of seven steps: (1) assessing whether the quasi-sentence addresses gender-related issues, (2) defining both the domain and coding category, (3) determining whether the quasi-sentence refers to a specific recipient or group based on gender and/or sexual orientation, (4) evaluating intersectionality, (5)<strong> </strong>assigning the sentiment or connotation, (6) determining if it's related to a goal, issue, or policy, and (7) characterising the policy if applicable.</p> <p>After completing the classification of the quasi-sentences in a given manifesto, coders fill in a survey for each manifesto document. The surveys provide information that cannot be directly inferred from the quasi-sentences, focusing on the gender ontology of a manifesto, the degree to which a manifesto entails a binary conception of sexes, the extent to which a manifesto promotes a patriarchal conception of the society, and how much a manifesto promotes heterosexuality as the only normal and socially acceptable sexual orientation of individuals. While the last four characteristics are gauged relying on quasi-interval measures (scales ranging from 0 to 10), the first one, gender ontology, consists in a categorical variable which distinguishes between manifestos with an essentialist ontology – gender and sex are the same and inseparable –, a constructivist ontology – biological sex is mediated through social construction of femininity and masculinity –, and other or undefined ontologies.</p>

<div>In order to obtain a high-quality LC-MS/MS reference database for spectral library matching, we selected 22 high-quality GNPS tandem mass spectrometry databases generated under the positive ion mode. Further preprocessing similar to Huber et al involving mass-to-charge (m/z) and intensity filtering yields the database found in the file LCMS_GNPS_reference_library.csv which contains 14,705 electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra, each of which corresponds to a unique compound. The NIST WebBook database was used to construct GC-MS database contained in the file GCMS_NIST_WebBook.csv. This database contains 23,721 electron ionization (EI) mass spectra, each of which corresponds to a unique non-hyphenated Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Registry Number.</div> <div> </div> <div>Both LC-MS/MS and GC-MS databases are organized into three columns: one for the identifier, one for the m/z values, and one for the intensity values. For example, if spectrum A has 20 ion fragments, then there will be 20 rows corresponding to spectrum A in the corresponding database with the identifier A repeated 20 times with the corresponding m/z and intensity values.</div>

Sub-National COVID-19 Incidence and Determinants Dataset
<p>The Sub-National COVID-19 Incidence and Determinants Dataset contains rich sub-national data on COVID-19 cases and deaths combined with data on factors associated with the spread and severity of COVID-19 outbreaks in 2020. The data covers 503 sub-national areas (NUTS-2 level and equivalents) of 46 countries in five continents (Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Oceania). Indicators were mostly gathered weekly, with the exception of some variables that are monthly and yearly. The dataset was compiled to study the determinants of COVID-19 outbreaks with a focus on the effects of international airline travel. However, the data are useful to investigate also other questions on the sub-national diffusion of COVID-19. The information used to build this dataset was drawn from a variety of sources in order to cover four major areas of interest: health outcomes of the pandemic (COVID-19 cases and deaths), international air travel (number of incoming air passengers, centrality of local airports in the global airline network and air travel limitation policies), population mixing and government policy responses, and pre-pandemic area characteristics (socioeconomic, demographic, public health and co-morbidity). Long-term trends in pesticide residues and physical chemical parameters of superficial water samples with accompanying macro-benthic invertebrate community surveys from the Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica: 1993-1994; 2001; 2004-2005; 2009-2011
During the years 1993-1994, 2001, 2003-2005 and 2009-2011, the Central American Institute for Studies on Toxic Substances (IRET-UNA) executed independent research projects which quantified the presence of pesticide residues on superficial water samples from the Palo Verde National Park (PVNP) and surrounding areas. The PVNP (5460 sq km) is a RAMSAR wetland of international importance, which has been subjected to pesticide pressure from agricultural fields (mainly rice and sugarcane) since the 1960s and 1970s. In 1993, the PVNP wetlands were placed on the RAMSAR Montreux Record, indicating that it was considered an “impaired ecosystem” due to ecotoxicology concerns. Water is the key component of all issues regarding the biodiversity, management, restoration, and economic development of this region. Therefore, water quality is a critical component of many social ecological discussions and research efforts. This data package contains uniform pesticide, biological and water quality data from all PVNP wetland projects (1993- 2011) in order to present long-term trends in the environmental water quality and accompanying biological patterns for this conservation area. Study sites were spatially determined to compare clean upstream waters with a gradient of pesticide-affected waters. Superficial water samples were collected at various sites for chemical (pesticide) analysis and water quality parameters were recorded in situ for environmental monitoring. Corresponding biological sampling was completed to survey benthic macroinvertebrate communities and compare with local eco-toxicological profiles. This data package contains information from four separate projects.
Microclimate temperature effects propagate across scales in forest ecosystems, Berchtesgaden National Park, Bavaria, Germany
Context: Forest canopies shape subcanopy environments, affecting biodiversity and ecosystem processes. Empirical forest microclimate studies are often restricted to local scales and short-term effects, but forest dynamics unfold at landscape scales and over long time periods. Objectives: We developed the first explicit and dynamic implementation of microclimate temperature buffering in a forest landscape model and investigated effects on simulated forest dynamics and outcomes. Methods: We adapted the individual-based forest landscape and disturbance model iLand to use microclimate temperature for three processes [decomposition, bark beetle (Ips typographus L.) development, and tree seedling establishment]. We simulated forest dynamics with or without microclimate temperature buffering in a temperate European mountain landscape under historical climate and disturbance conditions.
Geochemical Characterizations for Identifying Fugitive Dust Deposition and Enrichment of Surface and Subsurface Subalpine Soils from Phosphorus Mining, Eastern Ashley National Forest, Utah, 2022-2023.
Phosphorus is a non-renewable resource essential for all life. Anthropogenic alterations to the phosphorus cycle have led to widespread phosphorus pollution, and the unsustainable management of P has led to the threat of global depletion of phosphorus resources. Thus, accounting for the natural and anthropogenic flow paths of phosphorus is essential for its conservation and pollution reduction. One such source of human alteration to the phosphorus-cycle is phosphate rock mining. Mining, however, has many adverse environmental effects, including widespread fugitive dust emissions. Dust collection in the Ashley National Forest of northeastern Utah, proximate to a surface phosphorus mine, has shown phosphorus concentrations in dust more than four times that of other regional samples. Elevated phosphorus in dust near active surface mining suggests that mining emissions may alter the natural phosphorus loading of the soils in the National Forest through dust deposition; however, no research has been done to identify the abundance and range of mine-attributable phosphorus enrichment in the soils surrounding phosphate mining activities. The combined geospatial and geochemical approach of this study shows that surface soil phosphorus concentrations were found to be enriched above naturally occurring levels up to 6.5 km from mining activity (enrichment factor > 1.5), with the most significant enrichment occurring within the first 3 km (enrichment factor > 2). On average, surface phosphorus concentrations were significantly enriched by 25% within 6.5 km of phosphorus mining activity. Observed phosphorus enrichment was positively correlated with the presence of fluorapatite in the soil, which is the primary phosphorus-mineral extracted from the nearby mine. Further, bioavailable phosphorus concentrations were also higher for the soils that were enriched in phosphorus. Impact of Snowmelt Timing and Tree Proximity on Dutchman's Breeches Phenology and Performance in Mont Megantic National Park (Quebec, Canada; 2018-2019)
Data herein were collected in 2018 and 2019 in Mont Megantic National Park, Quebec, Canada, in a sugar maple-dominated temperate deciduous forest. Individuals of Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), a common understory spring ephemeral plant that is only active in the spring, were transplanted into a fully factorial experiment of snowmelt timing (early vs. late) and tree proximity (near vs. far) to determine the role of thaw circle formation in the local clustering of this species near canopy tree trunks. Plant phenology (emergence, senescence, and growing season length) and performance (stem abundance and leaf area) were tracked during two years of snow manipulation. Additionally, microclimate temperature data were collected in a subset of plots in 2018.

Tree Census Data of Tropical Dry Forest Succession in Permanent Plots at Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica (1999–2004), Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS)
This data package contains tree census data from eight permanent forest plots established in 1999 across four successional sites within the tropical dry forest of Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°21’N, 85°21’W). The plots were established to study forest structure, composition, and successional dynamics under different disturbance histories in the lowland dry forest ecosystem of northwestern Costa Rica. Each site represents a distinct successional stage, ranging from an early grass-dominated field (Jaragua) to an older partially disturbed remnant forest stand (Varillal). Two permanent 50×50 m plots were established at each site and subdivided into 10×10 m subplots. All woody stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were tagged, identified to species, and spatially referenced using X–Y coordinates within each plot. For multi-stemmed individuals, all stems meeting the diameter threshold were measured separately. Tree diameter, condition, and taxonomic identification were recorded during four measurement campaigns in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The dataset includes species identity, DBH, measurement year, individual condition, and subplot coordinates for each stem. These data provide a baseline for understanding forest regeneration, mortality, recruitment, and species composition changes in tropical dry forest succession under varying land-use histories. The dataset represents the historical component of an ongoing long-term monitoring program of forest succession conducted by the Organization for Tropical Studies at Palo Verde National Park, led, developed and supported by Eugenio González since its establishment in 1999.
Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, plant and carbon data, 2023-2024
These data were collected during the 2023-2024 growing season from the Warming and Removal in Mountains (WaRM) Experiment in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, which was established in 2015. Passive warming was done with open-top chambers, and the invasive dominant species Calluna vulgaris was removed in a factorial design. Two additional treatments were established in 2022: native removal plots with Dracophyllum subulatum removal and uninvaded plots without C. vulgaris. We measured plant biomass, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and carbon fluxes (net ecosystem exchange, gross primary productivity, and ecosystem respiration), using a LI-7500, at three times across the growing season (November, January, and March). The average leaf thickness of each plot was also measured in January. Air temperature, soil moisture, and surface temperature were also included from the 2023-2024 growing season from TMS-4 probes.

Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

This dataset contains site-level average estimated of environmental, soil, tree, vegetation, and fire characteristics measured in 2016, three years after the Toklat River Fire in Denali National Park and Preserve. Measured parameters include latitude, longitude, slope, aspect, elevation, moisture classification, bulk density of the surface soil, residual organic soil depth, thaw depth, burn depth, density and basal area of all tree species pre-fire, the density of all tree species post-fire, estimates of above- and below-ground carbon combustion, and understory vegetation turnover from pre-fire to post-fire. There is also data on seed trap collection and experimental regeneration of seedlings collected in 2017 and 2018 at a subset of sites.
