Numerical Analysis of Hybrid REBCO-Cu Coatings for the Future Circular Collider Beam Screen

Simulation files and data of the beam screen (BS) of the Hybrid Future Circular Collider (FCC) with a hybrid coating composed of alternating segments of REBCO high temperature superconductor (HTS) and copper.

00. All Simulations: All simulation files with no solutions.

01. ParametricStudy: Several coating geometries are evaluated in terms of the field quality within the reference radius of the FCC BS. The coatings are defined by the number of segments (n) and the ratio of HTS in the flat portions of the BS (p). The simulation files are generated via COMSOL LiveLink for MATLAB, with the MATLAB script ParSweepAutoSims.

02. HspmSims: The experimental setup of a Hall Scan Probe Microscopy measurement of trapped field is replicated with hybrid coatings of different p and n.

03. AcDemagnetization: The effect of a perpendicular AC field superimposed to a DC field to the current flowing in a HTS tape is simulated.

04. ProposedGeometry: A coating geometry is proposed based on the results of the parametric study.

05. MisalignedMultipole: The proposed geometry submitted to other magnetic field configurations as tu study the impact on field harmonics due to a quadrupole field, hysteresis, creep and misalignments. Each study requires different magnetic field inputs, which should be selected appropriately in the definitions tab. The MATLAB script FieldHarmCalc is used to calculate the field harmonics.

06. ThermoMechanical: The thermomechanical response of the coated beam screen is investigated. Dipole-induced heat as well as resistive wall heating and synchrotron radiation are considered.

07. DipoleQuench: The consequences of a quench of the main dipole magnets is studied. Temperature dependent material properties are taken into account.

08. TransverseCurrent: The correlation between transverse current flow and length in electronically coupled HTS segments is analysed in a simplified geometry.

09. RebcoProperties: The files containing the material properties used in the simulations. Data from S. Wimbush, N. Strickland, and A. Numerical analysis and machine learning techniques on the behavior of FRP confined circular reinforced concrete columns

This study presents a comprehensive nonlinear finite element study on the behavior of circular fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) confined reinforced and plain concrete columns under concentric loads. For this investigation, 65 test models with a combination of spiral hoop reinforced concrete, concrete with longitudinal and circular hoop reinforcements, and FRP confined plain concrete were designed . Four different machine learning (ML) techniques were developed to predict the ultimate axial load and strain at the tensile rupture of FRP. The accuracy of the proposed finite element model (FEM) was verified by comparing it with the existing experimental test results. The impact of unconfined concrete strength, hoop reinforcement ratio, thickness of FRP, and spiral hoop spacing on the confinement effectiveness, load-carrying capacity, and ductility behavior of circular FRP confined concrete columns were demonstrated. The parametric analysis found that axial load capacity of FRP-confined concrete columns increased when unconfined concrete strength increased, while low-strength confined concrete achieved a larger strength improvement ratio than high-grade concrete. The investigation also revealed that the thickness of the confining FRP has a significant impact on the confinement effectiveness of hoop reinforcement. The correlation between the FEM and experimental tests yielded 99.60% R2 for ultimate axial load and 93.40% R2 for ultimate strain. Extra tree regressor (ETR) and gradient boosting of ML yielded accurate predictions of ultimate axial load and strain at the tensile rupture of FRP compared to other approaches, but ETR has the best comprehensive prediction performance using the comprehensive ranking system. Overall, ETR can be applied in the ultimate axial load and strain prediction of circular FRP confined reinforced and plain concrete columns under concentric loads, conserving resources, time, and cost through laboratory testing.
