Seawater dissolved chromium concentration, redox speciation, and stable isotope composition in the North Pacific Ocean

<p>Dissolved seawater chromium concentrations, redox speciation, and stable isotope composition were measured on samples collected in the North Pacific Ocean. Samples were collected over diel cycles (2 for stations 1-5, 1 for station 6) on board the RV Kilo Moana cruise KM1713 from Seward Alaska to Honolulu Hawai&rsquo;i. Sampling stations spanned the subarctic North Pacific (stations 1 &amp; 2), the dynamic subarctic-subtropical convergence zone (stations 3 and 4) and the subtropical North Pacific (stations 5 and 6). Chromium was enriched from filtered samples by Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> co-precipitation and analyzed by MC-ICP-MS using either isotope dilution (Cr redox speciation) or double spike methodology.</p>

<p>This dataset presents all of the dissolved Cr data included and discussed in &ldquo;Release from biogenic particles, benthic fluxes, and deep water circulation control Cr and &delta;<sup>53</sup>Cr distributions in the ocean interior&rdquo; (Janssen et al., 2021, EPSL). Journey North - Gray Whale observations by volunteer community scientists across the Eastern Pacific Ocean (1997-2020)

This data package contains Gray Whale migration data consisting of 1,546 total observational reports from 1997 - 2020 across the Eastern Pacific Ocean. These data were collected by 163 community scientists for Journey North, a crowdsourced participatory science program of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum. The Journey North Gray Whale Project is a study of Gray Whale phenology conducted at broad spatial and temporal scales. Since 1997, community scientists have tracked the migration of Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) through the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Observers also provide estimates of the number of whales sighted. However, observers do not follow standardized methods for counting species observed. Observers do not observe at set times of the day, do not repeat observations regularly, and are not required to provide the length of time during which a specified number of species observed were counted. Therefore, it is recommended that this dataset be analyzed to indicate presence not abundance. Researchers are encouraged to read the rich information provided by volunteers in their comments. These comments provide qualitative information about observational reports. Researchers are also encouraged to refer to submitted photographs that also provide context for observational reports. The Journey North Gray Whale Project dataset is hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Shared Web Hosting Service.

PFAS, Coliform, and E. coli Data from Freshwater Canals, Brackish Water in Biscayne Bay, and Ocean Salt Water from Miami Beaches, Florida, USA, July 2023

This package contains data on levels of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), Coliform, and E. coli from samples collected at 15 water sampling sites in and around Biscayne Bay, Florida on 2023-07-27 as part of the Coastal Ecosystem-Research Experience for Teachers (CE-BIORETS) program. The sites included waterways leading to Biscayne Bay (freshwater canals), Biscayne Bay directly (marine brackish water), and ocean water from Miami beaches (marine salt water). A total of 500 mL of surface water was collected (at approximately 30 cm depth) from each site. Samples were run through a Solid Phase Extraction process (SPE) and then dried using a Nitrogen Evaporator. Extracts were then analyzed by Liquid Chromatography-Triple quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to determine the quantity of each of the different PFAS (ng/L) present in the sample. The same sites were selected for Coliform and E. coli colony forming units’ detection, and samples were collected at the same time as the PFAS samples. Samples were analyzed by pouring 100 mL of collected water into the wells on a ColiPlate. The 15 plates were incubated for 1 day at 37°C to determine if Coliforms and E. coli were detected. Data collection for this project is complete.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: Nearshore water profiles (monthly CTD and chemistry), ongoing since 2000

This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken monthly at these reefs in the nearshore areas of the Santa Barbra Channel, CA, USA: Arroyo Quemado, Bullito, Naples, Arroyo Burro, Mohawk and Carpinteria. Measurements include standard CTD parameters, nutrients, pigments, particulate CN, total dissolved N and P, stable isotopes of C and N (not all parameters are measured at all stations). Sampling began in November 2000. Some stations are sampled only occasionally. During the first 2 years, CTD data were collected with a SBE19 Seacat Profiler and water samples with a pump. Starting in February 2003, a SBE19-Plus with a rosette sampler was used. There are 3 tables in this dataset. Water chemistry and profiles from "registered stations" (see geographic coverage) are in 2 tables with "registered" in their name. CTD profiles are often collected ad hoc, or as "stations of opportunity". These have been collected in a third table as "non-registered". The station codes for these may be reused, and are not recorded in metadata (but can be found in data).

This data package includes wind data (e.g. wind speed, wind direction, wind velocity, air temperature, etc.) from 54 stations near Santa Barbara, CA since 1981. The wind data is collected from 3 agencies: Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District, California Department of Water Resources, and National Data Buoy Center. The data collected from the National Data Buoy Center also include the water temperature data. This data package is expected to update annually.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: Moored CTD and ADCP data from Arroyo Quemado, Site AQM

ADCP (Currents), CTD (Hydrography) and Optics (Fluorescence, Beam Attenuation, and Volume Scattering Function) data were collected year-round on the reef at Arroyo Quemado in the Santa Barbara Channel. The data contained here is for sampling site AQM, occupied for ~3 years, until kelp cover increased and obstucted flow to the reef. The mooring was moved about 200m to the SE in November 2004 to a new site named ARQ (data in package id knb-lter-sbc.2005). Data have been interpolated to a 20 min interval. ADCP data are orgainized into 1-meter bins, measured as height from the bottom, to a maximum of 16 bins. All bins may not be filled,and in some cases, data from bins technically above the surface are included. VSF data are available at angles, 100, 125 and 150 degrees. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, Density and Fluorescence. The CTD array is located approximately 4.5 meters from the surface, and there are additional temperature thermistors near the CTD array, at the bottom, and mid way between these two.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean hourly temperature at nearshore locations along the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel, ongoing since 2000

Ocean in-situ temperature data were collected at nearshore sites along the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel. The earliest temperature records started in April 2000. The temporal coverage varies at each site. At the start of the temperature data collection, the tidbit or hobo sensors were deployed on a mooring line at approximate 3 m, 9m, and 14 m nominal depths, and the sampling interval is 2 minutes. In 2013, the 3 m and 9 m temperature sensors were terminated and only 14 m sensors continued. In addition, the sampling interval changed to 15 minutes. This data package presents hourly average in-situ temperature data. The original raw data (2-min interval) between 2000-2010 were published on DataOne https://search.dataone.org/portals/PISCO. Data can be viewed and accessed by zooming in the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel region and searching the keyword "physical oceanography moored temperature data". These datasets were funded and managed by The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). In 2013, the maintenance of the sensor deployment was transferred to NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries, and Santa Barbara Coastal LTER has been responsible for data download and processing.

SBC LTER: Ocean: High resolution water temperature at Mohawk and Arroyo Quemado, ongoing since 2018

Ocean in-situ temperature data were collected at two nearshore locations: Mohawk and Arroyo Quemado. There are three sites at each of the locations: inshore, offshore, and east of reef. Temperature was recorded using hobo sensors at 1-meter interval along the water column, and the sampling interval is 2 minutes.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Time-series: Mid-water SeaFET and CO2 system chemistry at Alegria (ALE), 2011-2014

Calibrated pH (Total scale, SeaFET sensor) data was collected from Alegria in the Santa Barbara Channel (site ID: ALE) along with in situ temperature and associated carbonate chemistry parameters. The SeaFET instrument is located about 4 meters from the surface, with other moored instruments. Associated carbonate chemistry parameters were calculated with the CO2calc programs from USGS, and include: partial pressure and fugosity of CO2, concentrations of bicarbonate, carbonate and hyrdroxide ion, Omega (saturation state) of calcite and aragonite. Data have been interpolated to a 20 minute time interval for compatibility with other SBC LTER moored instrument data. Data coverage is 2011-06-21 to 2014-01-07.The update of this dataset was terminated in 2019. ­Calibrated data of stable water isotope measurements in water vapour at 13.5 m a.s.l., made in the austral summer of 2016/2017 around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set includes the calibrated data of stable water vapour isotope (&delta;<sup>18</sup>O, &delta;<sup>2</sup>H, deuterium excess) and water vapour mixing ratio measurements at approximately 13.5 m a.s.l. taken around the Southern Ocean during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from November 2016 to April 2017 using a Picarro laser spectrometer L2130. The data provides continuous timelines of atmospheric water vapour properties in the marine boundary layer for studies of the atmospheric water cycle.</p> <p>The raw data from which this calibrated dataset originates has been published separately (Thurnherr and Aemisegger, 2019; DOI 10.5281/zenodo.3664177).</p> <p>Two other calibrated stable water isotope measurement datasets were also collected during ACE.
