Benthic and Planktic Foraminifera Counts from Concession 20D on the Orange Shelf, South Africa.
<p>Benthic and planktic foraminifera counts from three vibracores within Concession 20D on the Orange Shelf of western South Africa. The vibracores from which foraminifera were subsampled include inner shelf core 12820D, outer shelf core 14820D, and outer shelf core 14620D. Counts are presented as absolute abundances and were counted to a 300-300 benthic-planktic threshold. Where this threshold could not be met, the total amount of benthic and planktic foraminifera for all sampled sediment was noted. </p>

<p><strong>We conducted a comprehensive genomics study to map genomic loci determining the production of antioxidants in sorghum grains. Encouraging results were obtained and published in peer-reviewed article with impact factor (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0225979). Annotated genes harboring major effect markers (R<sup>2</sup> ≥ 15%) were identified and will be of worldwide interest. </strong></p>

[William I, prince of Orange](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_Silent), Hendrik de Keyser, 1613 - 1614, [Rijksmuseum](https://bit.ly/2H3JNH7) This terracotta is the model for the life-size marble statue that is the focal point of the tomb of William of Orange in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. William was assassinated in 1584. The dead prince is portrayed in a surprisingly informal fashion: he wears a fur-lined tabard and a nightcap, a favourite garb for scholars in their study. Polarisation camera movie of single SYTOX Orange molecules on a cover glass
<p>This image dataset is a movie of the fluorescence of single SYTOX Orange molecules (S34861, Invitrogen) dispersed on a cover glass. The data was collected on a fluorescence microscope (Ti-U, Nikon) with a polarisation camera (CS505MUP, Thorlabs). The molecules were excited with a 532 nm diode laser with a measured power density at the sample plane of 0.36 kW/cm^2. An exposure time of 100 ms was used. The following filters were used: dichroic (Di03-R532-t1, Semrock) and emission filter (FF01-582/64, Semrock).</p>
Efficacy of intervention to relieve nest box competition for Orange‐bellied Parrot Neophema chrysogaster
<p><span>We use an experimental approach to evaluate the effectiveness of removing nests of a dominant competitor to create vacant nest boxes for a critically endangered parrot. We compared the number of times that Tree Martin (Petrochelidon nigricans – the dominant competitor at nest boxes) perched at or entered nest boxes intended for Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster – the subordinate nest competitor) over three time periods (before, immediately after and one week after experimental nest destruction). In the before period, rates of nest attendance by martins in treatment and control nests were not explained by treatment group. After experimental nest destruction, total attendance at boxes by martins rose to a mean of 6.1 visits over three five-minute surveys in the treatment group, compared with 3.3 visits at control boxes. Within individual surveys, martins visited treatment boxes 4.4 times per survey one week after nest destruction, compared with only 1.6 visits in the control group. Martins in the treatment group rapidly rebuilt their nests and laid replacement clutches, and within a week, all boxes were reoccupied. Nest destruction did not increase nesting opportunities for the parrot, and increased vigilance of the dominant competitor may in fact reduce nesting opportunities in nearby boxes. Our study suggests that removing martin nests is an ineffective management action for alleviating nest competition for this parrot.</span></p>
Lower reproductive rates of Asian citrus psyllid (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) on 'Tahiti' acid lime than on 'Valencia' sweet orange
<p>In Brazil, ‘Tahiti’ acid lime is usually found growing near sweet orange orchards, the main citrus grown in the country. As all citrus types, ‘Tahiti’ is susceptible to <em>Candidatus</em> Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), the pathogen associated with huanglongbing (HLB), the most devasting citrus disease, and hosts the vector of CLas, the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) <em>Diaphorina citri</em>. ‘Tahiti’ could then be contributing to spread CLas between ‘Tahiti’ and sweet orange orchards. Given the lack of comparative studies on the suitability of ‘Tahiti’ and sweet oranges to reproduce ACP a study was undertaken inside an acclimatized room (AR) and greenhouse (GH) involving healthy ‘Tahiti’ and ‘Valencia’ sweet orange plants. Daily temperature and relative humidity averaged 22ºC and 60% inside AR and 24°C and 70% inside GH. Two ACP couples were kept caged for 3 days on new shoots. Egg number and time for egg to hatch nymphs were assessed in AR and GH, and survival rates and time for nymphs to become adults in GH. Overall, ‘Tahiti’ was 3.5 times less suitable to ACP than ‘Valencia’. Egg number and nymph survivals were 27% and 59% lower, and the life cycle 34% longer on ‘Tahiti’ than on ‘Valencia’. Potential impacts of the results on CLas spread and HLB control are discussed.</p>
