Hygro-thermo-mechanical model for concrete pavement from an early age to a long-term performance

<p>A new 3D hygro-thermo-mechanical model for a concrete pavement slab is formulated, capturing its behavior from casting to long-term drying. The model includes a microprestress-solidification viscoelastic model for concrete ageing creep. Calibrations and validations are based on lab experiments and a four year continuous monitoring of a real highway slab. The results show that slab drying leads to the highest principal tensile stress on the surface as high as 3.5 MPa. Simulated temperature cycles and traffic loading yield smaller stresses. In this regard, concrete crack resistance during drying should be considered in material and structural design.</p>

Development of Decision Trees for the Selection of Pavement Maintenance and Rehabilitation Activities in South-Central United States

<p>Over time, new pavements deteriorate under the combined effects of traffic loading and the environment, no matter how well-designed or constructed. In general, maintenance and rehabilitation activities are employed to slow down or reset the rate of pavement deterioration. Cement-Stabilized Full Depth Reclamation (CSFDR) is a common rehabilitation treatment used by transportation agencies, specifically in Louisiana. Likewise, Ultra-Thin overlay (UTO) is a pavement maintenance treatment that has increased in popularity in recent years in Region 6. Yet, several gaps exist in the literature regarding the long-term field performance and cost-effectiveness of these two treatments especially in hot and humid climates. Therefore, the key objectives of this study were to assess the immediate benefits and long-term field performance as well as the cost-effectiveness of these two treatments in Louisiana. To achieve these objectives, numerous CSFDR and UTO projects were identified from the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LaDOTD) Pavement Management System (PMS) database and analyzed in terms of alligator cracks, rutting, random cracks, and roughness over a monitoring period of up to 15 years. Results indicated that the performance of CSFDR is significantly affected by the pre-treatment pavement conditions, applied overlay thickness, and traffic. Results also indicated that CSFDR projects would usually fail due to the development of random cracks. This could be attributed to the development of shrinkage cracks, which is a common problem with cement stabilization in Louisiana. A regression model was developed to predict the service life of CSFDR based on project conditions. Results also showed that UTO considerably extended the Pavement Service Life (PSL) for all the distress indices. This extension varied based on the pre-treatment pavement conditions and traffic level. As such, a predictive model was developed, with reasonable accuracy, to predict the extension in PSL of UTO based on project conditions. The developed models in this project for CSFDR and UTO will help state agencies make effective decisions for the maintenance and rehabilitation of their pavements.</p>

Use of Bagasse Ash as a Concrete Additive for Road Pavement Application

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) as a partial replacement of cement in concrete for road pavement application. The study explored the pozzolanic activity of SCBA produced from three different processing methodologies (i.e., raw SCBA, controlled SCBA and post-processed SCBA). The experimental results revealed that SCBA produced by the controlled burning of sugarcane bagasse fiber (SBF) at 650&deg;C and grinding (C-650), presented the maximum pozzolanic activity. However, this SCBA production process was deemed challenging for large-scale industrial application due to low SCBA yield (i.e., 3 to 6%). On the other hand, post-processing of raw SCBA, by burning at 450&deg;C and grinding (P-450), produced a similar pozzolanic activity to that of SCBA C-650. Moreover, since post-processing of raw SCBA produced a significantly higher SCBA yield (i.e., 85 to 90%) than that of controlled burning of SBF, SCBA P-450 was selected for further investigation in concrete mixtures. The effect of different dosages of P-450 (i.e., 20, 30, and 40% cement replacement by weight) on concrete properties was evaluated. It was determined that concrete mixtures utilizing substitutions of 10% and 20% of cement with SCBA exhibited a similar compressive strength to that of control after 90 days of curing for Class-A and Class-B concretes, respectively. At higher levels of cement replacement, the compressive strength of concrete mixtures decreased proportionally at both, 28 and 90 days of curing; yet, the relative strength gain from 28 to 90 days increased. Furthermore, at 90 days of curing, surface resistivity of SCBA admixed concrete mixtures was superior to that of control for all cases. Finally, a cost analysis showed that a 10% cement replacement with SCBA in concrete could yield a reduction of per lane-mile cost of 0.75%.&quot;</p>

Dataset for the paper "Three indexes to characterize crushing and screening of reclaimed asphalt pavement"

<p>The dataset includes Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) grading curve testing results from seven different materials that were produced using four different full-scale aggregate crushing machines. Samples of the same material before and immediately after crushing were obtained. The grading curves include white RAP (aggregates without bitumen) and black RAP (reclaimed asphalt together with bitumen).&nbsp;The data was used to develop and validate three indexes &ndash; chunk, breakdown, and filler increase indexes.
