Factors associated with patient satisfaction towards pharmacy services among out-patients attending public health clinics: Questionnaire development and its application

Introduction: Patient satisfaction is widely used to measure quality of healthcare by identifying potential areas for improvement.

Aim of study is to assess patient satisfaction towards pharmacy services and its associated factors using newly developed questionnaire among outpatients attending public health clinics.

Materials and Methods: Public Health Clinic Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PHC-PSQ) towards pharmacy services was developed using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's α. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 patients visiting the pharmacy in three randomly selected public health clinics recruited via systematic random sampling. Data was collected using a set of questionnaire including PHC-PSQ. Factors associated with patient satisfaction was analysed using multiple linear regression.

Results: Final PHC-PSQ consisted of three domains (administrative competency, technical competency and convenience of location) and 22 items with 69.9% total variance explained. Cronbach's α for total items was 0.96. Total mean score for patient satisfaction was 7.56 (SD 1.32). Older age and higher education were associated with lower patient satisfaction mean score. Patients who had visited the pharmacy more than once in the past three months, perceived to be in better health status and had a more correct general knowledge of pharmacists expressed higher patient satisfaction mean score.

Conclusions: PHC-PSQ is a newly developed tool to measure patient satisfaction towards pharmacy services in public health clinics in Malaysia. Patient satisfaction was relatively high. Age, education, frequency of visit, self-perceived health status and general knowledge of pharmacists were factors significantly associated with patient satisfaction.

Viet Nam: Private pharmacy TB referrals acceptability survey data

Pharmacies represent a key health system entry point for people with TB in Viet Nam, but high fragmentation hinders their broader engagement. Professional networking apps may be able to facilitate pharmacy engagement for systematic TB screening and referral. Between September and December 2019, we piloted the use of a social networking app, SwipeRx, to recruit pharmacists for a TB referral scheme across four districts of Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. We measured chest X-ray (CXR) referrals and TB detection yields at participating pharmacies and fielded 100 acceptability surveys, divided into pharmacists who did and did not make a CXR referral. We then fitted mixed-effect odds proportional models to explore acceptability factors that were associated with making a CXR referral.1,816 push notifications were sent to pharmacists via the SwipeRx app and 78 indicated their interest in participating; however, only one was within the pilot's intervention area. Additional in-person outreach resulted in the recruitment of 146 pharmacists, with 54 (37.0%) making at least one CXR referral. A total of 182 pharmacy customers were referred, resulting in a total of 64 (35.2%) CXR screens and seven people being diagnosed with TB. Compared to pharmacists who did not make any CXR referrals, pharmacists making at least one CXR referral understood the pilot's objectives more clearly (aOR=2.6, 95% CI: 1.2-5.8) and they believed that TB screening increased customer trust (aOR=2.7, 95% CI: 1.2-5.8), benefited their business (aOR=2.8, 95% CI: 1.3-6.2) and constituted a competitive advantage (aOR=4.4, 95% CI: 1.9-9.9). They were also more confident in using mHealth apps (aOR=3.1, 95 CI%: 1.4-6.8). Pharmacies can play an important role in early and increased TB case finding. It is critical to highlight the value proposition of TB referral schemes to their business during recruitment. Digital networking platforms, such as SwipeRx, can facilitate referrals for TB screening by pharmacists, but their ability to identify and recruit pharmacists requires optimization, particularly when targeting specific segments of a nation-wide digital network.

Improving Diabetes Knowledge of Pharmacy Professionals in Cambodia and Vietnam through Continued Professional development

Background: Pharmacies are a critical source of healthcare advice as well as medication for under-served communities in low and middle-income countries, including those with or at risk of diabetes; however, data on pharmacists’ diabetes knowledge and practices are limited.

Aim: To leverage a digital platform to assess and improve diabetes and blood glucose monitoring (BGM) knowledge and practices among pharmacy professionals in Cambodia ( KH) and Vietnam (VNM).

Method: An online survey was distributed to pharmacy professionals in KH and VNM who were registered on the SwipeRx platform (a digital network of pharmacy professionals in Southeast Asia). Eligible participants were engaged in dispensing and/or purchasing medicines and stocking ≥1 BGM product. An accredited continuous professional development (CPD) module was developed based on survey results & made available to pharmacy professionals and students on SwipeRx. Users were required to correctly answer ≥60% (KH) or ≥70% (VNM) of post-CPD assessment questions to receive accreditation credits.

Results: In total, 386 and 375 pharmacy professionals in KH and VNM completed the SwipeRx diabetes survey. Seventy-four per cent of respondents in KH (74%) and 49% of respondents in VNM described themselves as confident in providing BGM advice to clients; however, only 19% and 14% were aware that clients taking multiple daily doses of insulin should check blood glucose (BG) levels several times a day. In KH and VNM, respectively, 1,137 and 399 professionals/students completed the diabetes CPD, of whom 1,124/99% and 376/94% passed the post-CPD assessment. Post-education knowledge levels improved substantially in 10 of 14 learning areas in KH and 6 of 10 in VNM, including those related to the timing of BG level measurements and recommended BGM practices . The results were obtained in a short period of time (9 weeks) despite taking place during the pandemic.
