Sexual selection may contribute to the evolution of plant sexual dimorphism by favoring architecture traits that improve pollen dispersal to mates in males. In both sexes, larger individuals may be favored if large size allows the allocation of more resources to gamete production (a 'budget' effect of size). In wind-pollinated plants, large size may also benefit males if it allows them to liberate pollen from greater heights, fostering its dispersal (a 'direct' effect of size). To assess these effects and their implications for trait selection, we measured selection gradients on plant morphology in both males and females, as well as pollen production and dispersal in males, of the wind-pollinated dioecious herb Mercurialis annua. In two separate experimental common gardens established at different densities, selection strongly favored plants dispersing their pollen further. Selection for pollen production was observed in the high-density garden only and was weak. In addition, male morphologies associated with increased mean pollen dispersal differed between the two gardens as elongated branches were favored in the high-density garden while shorter plants with longer peduncles bearing inflorescences were advantaged the low-density garden. Larger females were selected in both gardens. Our results point to the importance of selection on male traits that affect pollen dispersal, and to a lesser extent pollen production.
Data from: The genetic architecture of a complex ecological trait: host plant use in the specialist moth, Heliothis subflexa
We used genetic mapping to examine the genetic architecture of differences in host plant use between two species of noctuid moths, Heliothis subflexa, a specialist on Physalis spp., and its close relative, the broad generalist H. virescens. We introgressed H. subflexa chromosomes into the H. virescens background and analyzed 1,462 backcross insects. The effects of H. subflexa-origin chromosomes were small when measured as the percent variation explained in backcross populations (0.2 to 5%), but were larger when considered in relation to the interspecific difference explained (1.5 to 165%). Most significant chromosomes had effects on more than one trait, and their effects varied between years, sexes, and genetic backgrounds. Different chromosomes could produce similar phenotypes, suggesting that the same trait might be controlled by different chromosomes in different backcross populations. It appears that many loci of small effect contribute to the use of Physalis by H. subflexa. We hypothesize that behavioral changes may have paved the way for physiological adaptation to Physalis by the generalist ancestor of H. subflexa and H. virescens.

Plant architecture, phenology and yield components of cultivated plants have repeatedly been shaped by selection to meet human needs and adaptation to different environments. Here we assessed the genetic architecture of 24 correlated maize traits that interact during plant cycle. Overall, 336 lines were phenotyped in a network of 9 trials and genotyped with 50K single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Phenology was the main factor of differentiation between genetic groups. Then yield components distinguished dents from lower yielding genetic groups. However, most of trait variation occurred within group and we observed similar overall and within group correlations, suggesting a major effect of pleiotropy and/or linkage. We found 34 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for individual traits and six for trait combinations corresponding to PCA coordinates. Among them, only five were pleiotropic. We found a cluster of QTLs in a 5 Mb region around Tb1 associated with tiller number, ear row number and the first PCA axis, the latter being positively correlated to flowering time and negatively correlated to yield. Kn1 and ZmNIP1 were candidate genes for tillering, ZCN8 for leaf number and Rubisco Activase 1 for kernel weight. Experimental repeatabilities, numbers of QTLs and proportion of explained variation were higher for traits related to plant development such as tillering, leaf number and flowering time, than for traits affected by growth such as yield components. This suggests a simpler genetic determinism with larger individual QTL effects for the first category.
ArchiWood: dataset of legacy documents about wood anatomical, morphological, and architectural traits for plant species in Madagascar
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Digitization of a part of CIRAD's' xylotheque, one of the most important collections of tropical timber in the world, now allows researchers, experts in the field, trainers and archaeologists to have a new source of homogenized information. This corpus constitutes a unique database on the botanical characteristics of many species of Madagascar and could feed the research in both ecological and systematic fields by the possibility to define traits and criteria usable for example in phylogeny or functional ecology.</p> <p>The island of Madagascar presents a remarkable floristic diversity, with a very high rate of endemism, making it a permanent laboratory for the study of the mechanisms governing evolution.</p> <p>The digitization project was conducted in close coordination with other projects currently underway involving the same partners. 995 species are concerned by the ArchiWood project: 3 planes of anatomical sections for each species, associated with a total of 100 field notebooks (architectural sketches) and 20,000 slides.</p> <p><strong>Contents</strong></p> <p>This dataset is composed of digitized legacy documents, all related to Madagascar biodiversity:</p> <ul> <li>More than 2,300 illustrations and notes taken from field notebooks</li> <li>More than 1,200 anatomical cuts</li> <li>More than 70 photographs of plants and landscapes</li> </ul> <p><strong>Methods</strong></p> <p><em>Digitization of anatomical cuts</em><br> For each species, there are 3 anatomical cuts associated with the 3 planes of symmetry of the material: radial, tangential and longitudinal. Each cut was scanned using an Olympus DP71 digital camera fitted on an Olympus BX60 microscope. The shooting software that drives the camera is Archimed from Microvision Instruments. The image format is 24 bits colored TIFF. Each image is 1600 x 1200 pixels for 3 different magnifications of the microscope: x40 (overview of the cut), x200 (main features anatomical from IAWA), x400 (highlighting fine lines such as punctuations).</p> <p><em>Digitization of sketches (from field notebooks) </em><br> The digitized information in the field notebooks is made up of architectural sketches (with descriptive notes). The slides include additional remarkable visual information of field sketches (flowers, fruits, overview, geographical implantation conditions…). The sketches were scanned using a resolution of 300 dpi, 24 bits colors in JPEG format.</p> <p><em>Digitization of photographs (24 x 36 mm)</em><br> The photographs were scanned at 600 dpi, 24 bits colors in JPEG format.</p> <p><strong>File management and data quality control</strong></p> <p>Controlling images and adding metadata operations were carried out by the researchers concerned in their field of activity (anatomy, botany, architecture). The homogenization and final harmonization of the metadata and data was carried out by the data manager.<br> </p>
