Botanic records from the forest reserves of south west Ghana: Plant species distribution data with checklist and conservation assessments from 114 vegetation plots

<p>South west Ghana is a biodiversity hotspot within the western African lowland tropical rainforest region, supporting many endemic and restricted range plant species. This dataset comprises botanic records from five forest reserves of south west Ghana (Ankasa, Boi Tano, Tano Nimri, Jema Assemkron, Nini Suhein). Vascular plant species distribution data (12,232 records) from 114 vegetation plot samples are presented, surveyed between 1981 and 2015. A plant species checklist including conservation assessments for each species is included. Nomenclature is current as of 2016. The dataset is linked to the publication Marshall et al, 2023, Implications for conservation assessment from flux in the botanical record over 20 years in south west Ghana, Ecology and Evolution <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.9775">https://doi.org/10.1002/ece3.9775</a>. Identifying Mozambique's most critical areas for plant conservation: An evaluation of protected areas and important plant areas

<p>Successful protected area networks must represent biodiversity across taxonomic groups. However, too often plant species are overlooked in conservation planning, and the resulting protected areas may, as a result, fail to encompass the most important sites for plant diversity. The Mozambique Tropical Important Plant Areas project sought to promote the conservation of Mozambique's flora through the identification of Important Plant Areas (IPAs). Here, we use the Weighted Endemism including Global Endangerment (WEGE) index to identify the richest areas for rare and endemic plants in Mozambique and subsequently evaluate how well represented these hotspots are within the current protected area and IPA networks. We also examine the congruence between IPA and protected areas to identify opportunities for strengthening the conservation of plants in Mozambique. We found that high WEGE scores, representing areas rich in endemic/near‐endemic and threatened species, predict the presence of IPAs in Mozambique, but do not predict the presence of protected areas. We also find that there is limited overlap between IPAs and protected areas in Mozambique. We demonstrate how IPAs could be an important tool for ensuring priority sites for plant diversity are included within protected area network expansions, particularly following the adoption of the "30 by 30" target agreed within the post‐2020 Convention on Biological Diversity framework, with great potential for this method to be replicated elsewhere in the global tropics.</p>

Conservation status of a plant family with high endemism, the Primulaceae, in China

<p>Primroses, ca 1000 species from the family Primulaceae, are mostly distributed in high mountains and attract people's attention with their high ornamental value. However, they are increasingly threatened by human activities and climate change in recent decades. China harbors more than half of global primrose species, most of which are endemic. To strengthen studies on their conservation, we established a distribution database for primroses in China, including 12 genera and 535 speceies. Based on this database, we explored the geographic pattern of the richness of primrose species in relation to environmental factors and identified conservation priority areas. The results showed that the primrose richness was highest in the mountain areas from the eastern Himalayas to the Hengduan Mountains, with habitat heterogeneity and temperature seasonality together shaping that pattern. Furthermore, the richnesses of endemic and threatened primroses were strongly affected by the long-term climate stability since the Last Glacial Maximum. On average, national nature reserves (NNRs) covered 29.6% of the distribution areas of primroses. By analyzing less protected species, we proposed that nature reserves need to be established in several conservation gaps mainly located in Southwest China to protect the primrose species in China.</p>

Nitrogen economy of alpine plants on the north Tibetan Plateau: nitrogen conservation by resorption rather than open sources through biological symbiotic fixation

<p>Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important factors limiting plant productivity, and N fixation by legume species is an important source of N input into ecosystems. Meanwhile, N resorption from senescent plant tissues conserves nutrients taken up in the current season, which may alleviate ecosystem N limitation. N fixation was assessed by the <sup>15</sup>N dilution technique in four types of alpine grasslands along the precipitation and soil nutrient gradients. The N resorption efficiency (NRE) was also measured in these alpine grasslands. The aboveground biomass in the alpine meadow was 4–6 times higher than in the alpine meadow-steppe, alpine steppe, and alpine desert-steppe. However, the proportion of legume species to community biomass in the alpine steppe and the alpine desert steppe was significantly higher than the proportion in the alpine meadow. N fixation by the legume plants in the alpine meadow was 0.236 g N m<sup>-2</sup>, which was significantly higher than N fixation in other alpine grasslands (0.041 to 0.089 g N m<sup>-2</sup>). The NRE in the alpine meadows was lower than in the other three alpine grasslands. Both the aboveground biomass and N fixation of the legume plants showed decreasing trends with the decline of precipitation and soil N gradients from east to west, while the NRE of alpine plants showed increasing trends along the gradients, which indicates that alpine plants enhance the NRE to adapt to the increasing droughts and nutrient-poor environments. The opposite trends of N fixation and NRE along the precipitation and soil nutrient gradients indicate that alpine plants adapt to precipitation and soil nutrient limitation by promoting NRE (conservative nutrient use by alpine plants) rather than biological N fixation (open sources by legume plants) on the north Tibetan Plateau.</p>

Effect of participation in commercial production of medicinal plants through community-based conservation groups on farm income at Kakamega forest, Kenya

<p class="Abstract">Forest conservation by peripheral communities is one of the most advocated strategies for ensuring sustainable supply of forest goods and services. In Kenya, although conservation activities generate considerable environmental improvements, studies evaluating the economic benefits are very limited. This study aimed at assessing the impact of participating in the commercialization training program by forest adjacent communities on farm income. Utilizing matching techniques, the analysis is based on the data collected from a randomly selected sample of farm households around Kakamega forest in Kenya. The results show that age, forest distance, forest benefit, market distance and farming experience are the main factors that influence the participation in the commercialization program. Also, participating in commercial production of medicinal plants has a positive and significant effect on farmers' income. The average treatment effect on the treated (ATT), based on three estimation algorithms, ranges from KSH. 80,047 to KSH. 176,788 per hectare, per year, implying that policy efforts that focus on the participation in the commercialization program of medicinal plants can enhance incomes among farm-dependent households. The findings from this study suggest that upscaling the participation in the commercialization program to other areas.</p>

Data from: Multi-objective optimization for plant germplasm collection conservation of genetic resources based on molecular variability

Germplasm collections play a significant role among strategies for conservation of diversity. It is common to select a core collection to represent the genetic diversity of a germplasm collection, in order to minimize the cost of conservation, while ensuring the maximization of genetic variation. We aimed to solve two main problems: (1) to select a set of individuals, from an in situ data set, that is genetically complementary to an existing germplasm collection, and (2) to define a core collection for a germplasm collection. We proposed a new multi-objective optimization (MOO) approach based on principles of systematic conservation planning (SCP) incorporating heterozygosity information; therefore, optimization takes genotypic diversity and variability patterns into account as well. As a case study, we used Dipteryx alata microsatellite loci information from two sources, an ex situ germplasm collection located at the Agronomy School of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG-AS), and an in situ data set composed of 642 sampled individual trees. We were able to identify within a population of several individuals, the exact accessions/samples that should be chosen in order to preserve the species diversity. We found that material from nine in situ individual trees are enough to complement the UFG-AS germplasm collection as it is, and that it is possible to define a core collection of 20 individual trees representing all studied genetic diversity. Moreover, we defined a method (a protocol) to deal with large amounts of accessions in the context of MOO. The proposed approach can be used to help constructing collections with maximal allelic richness and can also be extended to the in situ conservation. As far as we know, this is the first time that principles of SCP and the MOO approach are applied to the problem of complementing a germplasm collection and of finding a core collection for a germplasm collection.

Data from: Allocation of invasive plant management expenditures for conservation: lessons from Florida, USA

Although the ecological impacts of biological invasions are well studied, comprehensive analyses of spending on invasive species management are lacking. Such analyses could inform both effective resource allocation and management planning. We evaluated long-term invasive plant management expenditures and their potential geographic, economic, and ecological drivers for freshwater and terrestrial conservation areas in Florida, USA. Average expenditures for managing invaders were approximately US$45M annually, with over 90% of funding provided by the state. Our model showed that expenditures were best predicted by the prevalence of waterways and abundance of invaders, indicating that funding was allocated towards asset protection in highly-invaded aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Higher spending was directly correlated with reduced area invaded for the costliest invader (Hydrilla verticillata, ~$10M/year), demonstrating management efficacy and constructive use of resources. Our study highlights that significant funding is required to manage plant invaders in Florida and that greater funding would likely limit the extent of invasions. Additional analyses of management cost-effectiveness for Florida and other regions would benefit from consistent collection and reporting of high-resolution management data. Given the exponential rate of spread of many invaders, additional and sustained management funding is needed for early detection and rapid, effective control of invasive species.
