Limnological data from nearly 400 lakes across the Americas and New Zealand with a focus on vertical profiles of temperature, UV radiation, and optical properties
Two and a half decades of limnological data have been collected from nearly 400 lakes, encompassing a wide range of systems and a broad range of geography. This data set comprises one of the largest and most complete sets of measurements of underwater ultraviolet (UV) transparency available in the world. The data include a suite of 36 variables, with a focus on the optical characteristics. Lakes range from pristine natural lakes to manmade reservoirs. The systems represented in this data set are largely located in North America, from the northeastern United States to Alaska, and alpine and subalpine lakes in the Rocky Mountains of the United States and Canada. Lakes included range from iconic Lake Tahoe, and Castle Lake in northern California, to lakes in the South American Patagonian region, as well as New Zealand. Data were most often collected during the summer, and in some lakes span multiple years (with year-round data since 2006 in Lake Tahoe). The data here are contained in four files, including LakeData.csv, SiteInformation.csv, Methods.csv, and Variables.csv. The main data are in LakeData.csv. SiteInformation.csv, Methods.csv, and Variables.csv support the main data file with descriptions of the sampling sites, methods by which samples were processed, and descriptions of the variables that were measured, respectively. This data set complements the site-intensive limnological data that we published in EDI on 30+ years of data from 3 lakes in the Poconos Mountains region of Pennsylvania, USA. Monthly vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and photosynthetically-available radiation in Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River transect surveys from April 2008 to April 2015
Monthly hydrographic surveys were performed along the Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River from April 2008 to April 2015. Vertical CTD profiles were collected from the surface to bottom during low and high tide phases at fixed stations chosen to coincide with long-term GCE-LTER moorings. Conductivity, temperature, pressure, photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) and oxygen concentration were measured at 8 Hz using a SeaBird Electronics SBE-37 instrument, and depth, salinity and sigma-t and oxygen saturation were calculated using UNESCO algorithms. Data values collected during the upcast were deleted. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER monthly hydrographic monitoring program, and will be updated approximately annually to include the latest observations.

Underwater Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) from in-situ Lake Primary Production Experiments in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica (1995-2024, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, PAR is measured at one depth during primary production experiments in Dry Valley Lakes. This data set quantifies instantaneous underwater PAR at 10-meter depths in Lakes Bonney and Hoare, and at 7-meter depth in Lake Fryxell (depths vary after 2008, check data file for actual depth). Ambient PAR was also measured at the air-ice interface from each of these lakes.
Lake Fryxell photosynthetically active radiation measurements, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica
Under-ice and water column photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured in Lake Fryxell, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, on 18 November 2012, 26 December 2022, and 17 January 2025 to track changes in irradiance transmission over time. In 2012 and 2022, a diver-deployed LI-COR LI-192R quantum sensor connected to a LI-1400 data logger recorded PAR (µmol photons m⁻² s⁻¹) beneath the ice along radial transects from the dive hole, while simultaneous measurements at the lake surface were used to calculate percent transmission. In 2025, a PME miniPAR logger (µmol photons cm⁻² s⁻¹) mounted on a Chasing M2 ProMax remotely operated vehicle (ROV) collected under-ice PAR, with concurrent surface measurements using a LI-192R sensor to calculate percent transmission.
Underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) vertical profiles collected from lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2025, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, lakes are monitored for photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) levels. This data set exemplifies the vertical profile of underwater PAR profiles in perennial ice covered lakes and ambient PAR measured at the air-ice interface. Profile data can be used to calculate extinction coefficients for the water column and ice layer.

Data used to create figures in the ACP Letters manuscipt "The value of remote marine aerosol measurements for constraining radiative forcing uncertainty" by Regayre et al. (2020)
<p>This dataset was created from perturbed parameter ensembles (PPEs) using the HadGEM-UKCA atmospheric composition climate model. All data needed to reproduce figures in the Regayre et al. (2020) ACP Letters article "The value of remote marine aerosol measurements for constraining radiative forcing uncertainty" are included. Other output from the PPEs can be obtained by contacting the lead author.</p> <p>The following data are included here:</p> <ul> <li>CCN measurement data degraded to match the model-measurement comparison resolution.</li> <li>Unconstrained and constrained CCN<sub>0.2</sub> output from the PPE used to make Figure 1. These compressed files contain 48 .dat files. Each .dat file contains the PPE mean, variance and 95% creidble interval data. Files are named consecutively, containing data from 90<sup>o</sup>S to 90<sup>o</sup>N at 0<sup>o</sup>E, then continuing Eastward. When combined, these files provide data for each latitude/longitude pair at the N48 spatial resolution.</li> <li>A zip file of an netcdf file containing 26-dimensional data for parameter values, used to create the sample of 1 million model variants from our statistical emulators of model output.</li> <li>A zip file containing a folder of files made of one million ones and zeros that indicate the retention/rejection criteria from applying our constraint methodology for various constraint combination scenarios, for each model variant. A value of 1 indicates the model variant was retained. Data in these files is in the same order as the unconstrained sample file of parameter values.</li> <li>Compressed files containing global, annual mean RF<sub>aci</sub> and ERF<sub>aci</sub> values for the unconstrained set of one million model variants. The compressed netcdf files contain RF (ERF), RF<sub>aci</sub> (ERF<sub>aci</sub>) and RF<sub>ari</sub> (ERF<sub>ari</sub>) values.</li> </ul>

<p>Radiance data for "Systematic Comparison of Vectorial Spherical Radiative Transfer Models in Limb Scattering Geometry" by Zawada et al. which is to be submitted to Atmospheric Measurement Techniques. </p> <p>A comprehensive inter-comparison of seven radiative transfer models in the limb scattering geometry has been<br> performed. Every model is capable of accounting for polarisation within a fully spherical atmosphere. Three models (GSLS, SASKTRAN-HR, and SCIATRAN) are deterministic, and four models (MYSTIC, SASKTRAN-MC, Siro, and SMART-G)<br> are statistical using the Monte Carlo technique. This dataset consists of the raw radiance data used to perform the intercomparisons, atmospheric input data for the optical properties of the atmosphere, and data specifying the geometry of the test cases.</p> <p>Data is provided in NetCDF4 format with documentation present inside the variable attributes.</p> <p>More detail on the comparison scenarios can be found within the published article. Pilot Radiation under Surveillance, Veluwe, Netherlands
<p>Research on the effect of transmitter radiation intensity and frequency on bird and bat behavior around a transmitter mast in the Vierhouten forest on the National park the Veluwe in The Netherlands done in 2022 and 2023. This research has tested a protocol and taken a first step toward monitoring effects of radiation on nature in the Veluwe. To ensure the health of nature, the research will have to be continued. To this end, the data from this study are made available. Environmental radiation measurement data, bird behavior and bat counts.</p>

The NGR system uses layers of passive shielding (lead) and active shielding (plastic scintillators and coincidence electronics) to reduce the cosmic-ray signal for low-count analysis of sediment core sections and to obtain the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. Data are reported on a total counts per second basis and the raw spectral files are available as compressed files for later analysis.
