Adaptation of the Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Short Form (TCU-ORC-SF) for use in primary health facilities in South Africa

Objectives: The Texas Christian University Organisational Readiness for Change Scale (TCU-ORC) assesses factors influencing adoption of evidence-based practices. It has not been validated in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This study assessed its psychometric properties in a South African setting with the aim of adapting it into a shorter measure.

Methods: This study was conducted in 24 South African primary health care clinics in the Western Cape Province. The TCU-ORC and two other measures, the Organisational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA) and the Checklist for Assessing Readiness for Implementation (CARI) were administered. The questionnaire was re-administered after 2 weeks to obtain data on test-retest reliability. Three hundred and ninety-five surveys were completed: 281 participants completed the first survey, and 118 re-completed the assessments.

Results: We used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify latent dimensions represented in the data. Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was assessed and we examined the extent to which the subscales and total scale scores for the first and retest surveys correlated. Convergent validity was assessed by the correlation coefficient between the TCU-ORC, ORCA and CARI total scale scores. EFA resulted in a three-factor solution. The three subscales proposed are Clinic Organisational Climate (8 items), Motivational Readiness for Change (13 items), and Individual Change Efficacy (5 items) (26 items total). Cronbach's alpha for each subscale was >.80. The overall shortened scale had a test-retest correlation of r = .80, p < 0.01, acceptable convergent validity with the ORCA scale (r = .56, p < .05), moderate convergence with the CARI (r = 39, p<.05) and strong correlation with the original scale (r = 0.79, p < .05).

Conclusions: This study presents the first psychometric data on the TCU-ORC from a LMIC. The proposed shortened tool may be more feasible for use in LMICs.

Physiological and environmental data from: Are you ready for the heat? Plasticity vs adaptation of heat tolerance in three-spined stickleback

Heat waves constitute a challenge for aquatic ectotherms. However, the thermal tolerance of animals and their individual phenotypic plasticity to respond to heat waves may be influenced by thermal history. We tested these hypotheses by comparing the upper thermal tolerance and the individual capacities of three-spined sticklebacks from populations with different thermal histories to respond to heat waves. Two populations originated from thermally polluted nuclear power plant (NPP) habitats, while four locations represented geographically adjacent control areas. To disentangle the genetic adaptation from the phenotypic plastic response, we measured the individual upper thermal tolerance and the responses at molecular level in common garden conditions before and after a laboratory-mimicked heat wave. We found that the sticklebacks exhibit considerable phenotypic plasticity in thermal tolerance since the heat wave increased fish upper thermal tolerance significantly. The individual plasticity to respond to the heat wave was also negatively correlated to initial thermal tolerance. On the other hand, neither the thermal tolerance nor the plastic responses differed between NPP and control sites despite detection of significant but low genome-wide divergence in 10 out of 15 pairwise comparisons. Our results suggest that five decades of nuclear power plant activity with warmer water has not resulted in a detectable evolutionary change in either the upper thermal tolerance or its plasticity in three-spined sticklebacks potentially rendering them sensitive to frequent heat waves.

Pathogen reduction data when applying high pressure processing to milk/colostrum and ready-to-eat foods

Introduction

This dataset was built by members of the EFSA Working Group on high pressure processing (HPP) of food during the preparatory work on the BIOHAZ Scientific Opinion on the efficacy and safety of high pressure processing of food (EFSA-Q-2020-00380) (https://doi.org/10.2903/j.efsa.2022.7128).

It was used to answer to the following Terms of Reference (ToR) of the mandate:

ToR2. To assess the efficacy of HPP when applied to raw milk and raw colostrum from ruminants, and in particular:

a. To recommend minimum requirements as regards time and pressure of the HPP, and other factors if relevant, for the control of Mycobacterium spp., Brucella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), to achieve an equivalent efficacy to that of thermal pasteurisation.

ToR3. To assess the efficacy of HPP when applied to foods known to cause human listeriosis and in particular:

a. To recommend minimum requirements as regards time and pressure of the HPP, and other factors if relevant, to reduce significantly L. monocytogenes levels (e.g. by a certain log reduction), and assuming that the parameters influencing the growth of L. monocytogenes remain unchanged (e.g. shelf-life and storage conditions);

b. To assess the efficacy on other relevant pathogens when applying the minimum requirements identified in a.

A literature search was conducted to retrieve studies reporting on pathogen-specific parameters when treating milk/colostrum and ready-to-eat foods with HPP. A modelling approach was used to fit the derived log10 reductions (logR) at specific pressure-holding time combinations. More information can be found in the Scientific Opinion.

Description

Two MS-Excel files contain the extracted data.

One file consists of the data used for answering ToR2 and contains data on HPP inactivation of Mycobacterium bovis, L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., STEC, Campylobacter spp., and Staphylococcus aureus in milk and colostrum from ruminants.

The other file was used for answering ToR3 and contains data on HPP inactivation of L. monocytogenes, Salmonella spp. and E. coli in three types of RTE food categories: category “cooked meat products”, category “smoked and gravad fish” and category “soft or semi-soft and fresh cheese”.

Both files contain metadata related to product characteristics (e.g. the food matrix and composition), contamination characteristics (e.g. pathogen/strain used for inoculation, inoculation level, medium used for enumeration), HPP treatment characteristics (e.g. target pressure, time), and outcome (e.g. log10 reduction).

(Stechkin pistol) APS | Free game ready asset
The Stechkin automatic pistol or APS (Avtomaticheskiy Pistolet Stechkina = Автоматический Пистолет Стечкина) is a Soviet selective fire machine pistol chambered in 9×18mm Makarov and 9×19mm Parabellum introduced into service in 1951 for use with artillery and mortar crews, tank crews and aircraft personnel, where a cumbersome assault rifle was deemed unnecessary. Seeing service in a number of wars such as the Vietnam War, War in Donbas and Syrian Civil War. The APS was praised for its innovative concept and good controllability for its size. However, the high cost of the weapon, complex and time-consuming machining, combined with a limited effective range, large size and weight for a pistol, and fragile buttstock have been mentioned as a reason to phase it out of active service in favour of assault rifles such as the AKS-74U. The pistol bears the name of its developer, Igor Stechkin. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
