Results of Improved SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Using a Deep Neural Network-based Replacement of Radiative Transfer and Roughness Model

This repository contains:

A deep neural network (DNN) based soil moisture (SM) estimates (NN) based on the SMAP TB (Descending, 6 AM) and SMAP SCA-V ancillary data as the input variables. (SMAP_NN_36km_20150331_20220326.nc)

Temporally averaged roughness parameter (hNN) and scattering albedo (omegaNN) which are retrieved by inversely tracking the DNN model. (SMAP_hNN_omegaNN_36km_temporal_average_201503_202103.nc)

Summary:

The DNN model has been developed by relating SMAP TB and SMAP SCA-V ancillary data with in-situ SM data from the international soil moisture network (ISMN) using DNN. To minimize scale mismatch between gridded SMAP data and point in-situ data, the triple collocation analysis was conducted.

The SM estimated from the DNN algorithm (NN) showed a good agreement with the ISMN data that was not used in the model training. Moreover, for a densely vegetated region located in the Amazon (Tambopata site) the NN showed less bias compared to available SM retrievals.

Two parameters hNN and omegaNN are retrieved by ingesting NN to the modified dual channel algorithm. When the SM retrieval was conducted using the hNN and omegaNN, the result showed good agreement with the NN (DNN-based SM) with R of 0.986, ubRMSD of 0.015 m3/m3, and bias of -0.001 m3/m3.

The paper "Improved SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Using a Deep Neural Network-based Replacement of Radiative Transfer and Roughness Model" published in the Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

For more details, please contact me (wotp12@unist.ac.kr)

FIG. 1. — This concrete bridge replaced a in Pigs and ritual-hunting among the highland Tau-Buhid in Mounts Iglit-Baco natural park, Philippines
FIG. 1. — This concrete bridge replaced a hanging bridge as part of the State modernization plan for the Mounts Iglit-Baco Natural Park. For many Tau-Buhid, the concrete bridge represents a denial of their legal and customary rights within and over the extent of their lands, and is a threat to the survival of their way of life. Through this bridge, State surveillance and control of highland activities intensified. Photo credits: C. A. Rosales.

Data for: Using spatial patterns of seeds and saplings to assess the prevalence of heterospecific replacements among cloud forest canopy tree species

Questions: To gain insights into the role of species-by-species replacements in cloud forest community structuring, we asked: (1) What are the effects of the spatial distribution of standing individuals on the seed rain, soil seed bank, and sapling density and survival in this cloud forest? and (2) What is the prevalence of conspecific vs. heterospecific replacements in the regeneration of this forest?

Location: Santo Tomás Teipan, Oaxaca State, southern Mexico.

Methods: In a 1-ha cloud forest plot we assessed seed rain, seed bank, and sapling density and survival of four canopy tree species (Chiranthodendron pentadactylon, Cornus disciflora, Quercus laurina, Oreopanax xalapensis). All standing individuals of these and other tree species (dbh ≥ 2.5 cm) were mapped. We used neighbourhood models to examine the spatial patterns of the three life cycle stages relative to the spatial distribution of adults. The neighbourhood effect was assessed through the Neighbourhood Index, which integrates information on size (dbh) and distance to adults. Data analysis was based on maximum likelihood and model selection procedures.

Results: We found large between-species differences regarding the spatial patterns of seeds and saplings. Three species showed evidence for the Janzen-Connell effect operating at the seed (C. pentadactylon and Q. laurina) or sapling (O. xalapensis) stage. We also found support for a critical role of specific microsite factors (i.e., niche differentiation) in the regeneration of two species (C. pentadactylon and C. disciflora).

Conclusions: Seed and sapling distribution patterns suggest the prevalence of heterospecific replacements, and that both Janzen-Connell and niche differentiation effects contribute to this pattern. Our results largely support the notion that the prevalence of heterospecific replacements among canopy species promotes species coexistence in cloud forest.

Data from: Balanced replacement of fish meal with Hermetia illucens meal allows efficient hepatic nutrient metabolism and increased fillet lipid quality in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) juveniles

In the present study, gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) juveniles were reared using sustainable feeds containing insect meal from Hermetia illucens larvae and poultry by-products meal. Proteomics and Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-based metabolomics analysis were used to assess the metabolic impact of tested dietary formulations in sea bream liver, whereas the composition of muscle fillet was characterized by means of metabolomics and gas chromatography of fatty acids methyl esters. Replacing fish meal with insect meal in a 5% fish meal diet did not substantially alter metabolism of dietary nutrients, leading to small but statistically detectable effects solely on lauric acid content of sea bream fillet, and few alterations in some markers of immune response, such as leukocyte elastase inhibitor-like, granzyme B (G,H)-like, and two associated ortholog groups namely serpin B, and chymase). Liver morphology confirmed the absence of structural damage or inflammation in the insect meal-fed group, which showed a lower amount of hepatic lipid deposition and accumulation, too.
