Floral tea polyphenols can improve honey bee memory retention and olfactory sensitivity
<p>Animal-pollinated plants face a common problem, how their defensive anti-herbivore compounds may impair or alter pollinator behavior. Evolution has tailored multiple solutions, which largely involve pollinator tolerance or manipulation, to the benefit of the plant, not the removal of these compounds from pollen or nectar. The tea plant, <em>Camilla sinensis</em>, is famous for the caffeine and tea polyphenols (TP) that it produces in its leaves. However, these compounds are also produced in its nectar, which honey bees readily collect. We examined the effects of these compounds on bee foraging choices, learning, memory, and olfactory sensitivity. Foragers preferred a sucrose feeder with 100 µg or 10 µg TP/ml over a control feeder. Caffeine, but not TP, weakly increased honey bee learning. Both caffeine and TP significantly increased memory retention, even when tested 7 d after the last learning trial. In addition, TP generally elevated EAG responsiveness to alarm pheromone odors. These results demonstrate that not only caffeine, but other secondary plant compounds, can attract pollinators and influence their learning and memory.</p>
Septa and camerae models for cameral liquid retention experiments
<p>Virtual models (in STL format) of ectocochleate (externally-shelled) cephalopod chambers (camerae) and divider walls (septa). These models were 3D printed to measure their retention of liquid by surface tension. This zip folder contains models of two types: 1) single septa for different species confined in a cylindrical shell, and 2) entire camerae of two species. The latter models have several iterations of smoothed versions for comparison. </p>
Data from: Ecosystem nitrogen retention is regulated by plant community trait interactions with nutrient status in an alpine meadow
1.Biotic nitrogen (N) retention is an important ecosystem function in the context of ongoing land use intensification, N deposition and global warming. However, a paucity of experimental evidence limits understanding of how different plant community components influence N retention in terrestrial ecosystems. 2.In this investigation we conducted a 15N labelling experiment to test how plant community properties, including plant species richness/diversity, dominance and functional traits, influence plant N uptake and retention under different nutrient availabilities. A three-year experiment examined the effects of adding N (10 g N m−2 year−1) and phosphorus (P) (5 g P m−2 year−1) to an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. 3.Results show that 15N retention increased with the addition of N and P; the addition of P produced the largest increase of 15N retention in plant and soil N pools. Changes in soil nutrient conditions also facilitated different plant community controls on ecosystem N retention. Ecosystem 15N retention was influenced by species richness and root biomass in the control plots; whereas the N addition treatment showed an important effect of community-weighted means (CWM) of specific leaf area (SLA), and plots with additional P recorded lower CWM of root nitrogen content (root N) and larger CWM root:shoot ratios (R/S) as important determinants. 4.Synthesis. Ecosystem N retention was influenced by conservative and exploitative plant species and/or their traits under N deficient and abundant conditions, respectively, whereas species richness and community plant biomass were most influential under control conditions. The discovery of an interaction between plant community traits and nutrient biogeochemistry as a mechanism for ecosystem N retention offers a means to predict how vegetation in alpine meadow ecosystems will respond to expected global change.
The oxytocin-prostaglandins pathways in the horse (Equus caballus) placenta during pregnancy, physiological parturition, and parturition with fetal membrane retention
<p>Despite their importance in mammalian reproduction, substances in the oxytocin-prostaglandins pathways have not been investigated in the horse placenta during most of pregnancy and parturition. Therefore, we quantified placental content of oxytocin (OXT), oxytocin receptor (OXTR), and prostaglandin E2 and F2 alpha during days 90–240 of pregnancy (PREG), physiological parturition (PHYS), and parturition with fetal membrane retention (FMR) in heavy draft horses (PREG = 13, PHYS = 11, FMR = 10). We also quantified <i>OXTR</i> and<i> </i>prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-2 (<i>PTGS2</i>) mRNA expression and determined the immunolocalization of OXT, OXTR, and PTGS2. For relative quantification of OXT and OXTR, we used western blotting with densitometry. To quantify the prostaglandins, we used enzyme immunoassays. For relative quantification of <i>OXTR</i> and <i>PTGS2</i>, we used RT-qPCR. For immunolocalization of OXT, OXTR, and PTGS2, we used immunohistochemistry. We found that OXT was present in cells of the allantochorion and endometrium in all groups. <i>PTGS2</i> expression in the allantochorion was 14.7-fold lower in FMR than in PHYS (<i>p</i> = 0.007). These results suggest that OXT is synthesized in the horse placenta. As PTGS2 synthesis is induced by inflammation, they also suggest that FMR in heavy draft horses may be associated with dysregulation of inflammatory processes.</p>
Lying deadwood retention affects microhabitat use of martens (Martes spp.) in European mountain forests
<p><span>Biodiversity loss due to intensive timber production is a ubiquitous conservation issue across temperate and boreal forest ecosystems. Retention forestry, the retention of deadwood and old-growth features within production forest, is one management strategy that has been implemented in various countries around the world to conserve a wide range of taxa within managed forests. The success and ecological implications of retention forestry are currently subject to intensive investigation and while some taxa like birds and insects have already been studied frequently, larger mammals have obtained less attention. Pine martens are one of the few larger mammals in central Europe preferring older forest and potentially profiting directly from deadwood retention as a consequence of implemented retention forestry. The goal of our study was to assess the response of European marten species to deadwood retention in montane mixed forests. Using marten detection rates from camera traps on 135 research plots we assessed the response of martens to deadwood on three different spatial scales using generalized linear mixed models. We found no effect of lying deadwood on marten detections on the plot scale (one-hectare) or in a ten-meter radius around the camera traps. However, we found a significant increase in marten detections if logs (>10 cm) were directly in front and in view of the camera trap. Our results show that deadwood retention as a measure of retention forestry does affect microhabitat use of martens, but not stand selection during the growing season. Logs directly in view of the camera trap increase marten detection rates as martens choose to move and forage along fallen trees when they are available. When using camera trapping to collect data on martens, trap positioning in front of logs can heavily bias trapping results when unaccounted for.</span></p>
Nitrogen redistribution and seasonal trait fluctuation facilitate plant N conservation and ecosystem N retention
<ol> <li><span>Low available soil nitrogen (N) limits plant productivity in alpine regions, and alpine plants thus resorb and reallocate N from senescing tissues to conserve this limited N during the nongrowing season. However, the destination and extent of N redistribution during plant senescence among above- and below-ground organs, let alone other processes of translocation outside of plants and into the soil components, remain poorly understood. </span></li> <li><span>Utilizing the <sup>15</sup>N stable isotope as a tracer, we quantified N redistribution among above- and below-ground plant organs and different soil components during senescence in an alpine meadow ecosystem, and explored the relationship between <sup>15</sup>N among plant-soil N pools with seasonal fluctuations of plant functional traits.</span></li> <li><span>We found a substantial depletion of <sup>15</sup>N in fine roots (-40% ± 2.8%) and aboveground tissues (-51% ± 5.1%), and an enhanced <sup>15</sup>N storage primarily in coarse roots (+79% ± 27%) and soil organic matter (+37% ± 10%) during plant senescence. In parallel, we observed a temporal variation in plant functional traits, representing a shift from more acquisitive to more conservative strategies as the growing season ends, such as higher coarse root N and coarse root to fine root ratio. The seasonal trait variations were highly correlated with the <sup>15</sup>N retention in coarse roots and soil organic matter. Particularly, <sup>15</sup>N retention in particulate and mineral-associated organic matter increased by 30% ± 12% and 24% ± 9%, respectively, suggesting a potential pathway through which fine root and microbial mortality contribute to <sup>15</sup>N redistribution into soil N pools during senescence.</span></li> <li> <span><em>Synthesis</em>. </span><span>N redistribution and seasonal plant trait fluctuation facilitate plant N conservation and ecosystem N retention in the alpine system. This study suggests a coupled aboveground-belowground N conserving strategy that may optimize the temporal coupling between plant N demand and ecosystem N supply in N-limited alpine ecosystems. </span> </li> </ol>
The neural correlates of embodied L2 learning. Does embodied L2 verb learning affect representation and retention?
<p>We investigated how naturalistic actions in a highly immersive, multimodal, interactive 3D virtual reality (VR) environment may enhance word encoding by recording EEG in a pre/post-test learning paradigm. While behavior data has shown that coupling word encoding with gestures congruent with word meaning enhances learning, the neural underpinnings of this effect have yet to be elucidated. We coupled EEG recording with VR to examine whether "embodied learning" improves learning and creates linguistic representations that produce greater motor resonance. Participants learned action verbs in an L2 in two different conditions: Specific action (observing and performing congruent actions on virtual objects) and Pointing (observing actions and pointing to virtual objects). Pre and post-training participants performed a Match-mismatch task as we measured EEG (variation in the N400 response as a function of match between observed actions and auditory verbs) and a Passive listening task while we measured motor activation (mu (8-13 Hz) and beta band (13-30Hz) desynchronization during auditory verb processing) during verb processing. Contrary to our expectations, post-training results revealed neither semantic nor motor effects in either group when considered independently of learning success. Behavioral results showed both groups learned the verbs, but also a great deal of variability in learning success. When considering performance, Low performance learners showed no semantic effect and High performance learners exhibited an N400 effect for Mismatch vs Match trails post-training, independent of the type of learning. Taken as a whole, our results suggest that embodied processes can play an important role in L2 learning.</p>
CoUDlabs_WP8_T831_AaU_001 Application of Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) technique in Aalborg retention pond
<p>This dataset includes the data obtained during the installation of a camera system to determine the surface velocities in a retention pond monitored by Aalborg University (AAU). The dataset consists of raw and processed images and surface velocity maps obtained during preliminary experiments when the retention tank was being filled and emptied. The objective is to assess the feasibility and usefulness of this type of measurement for the calibration of CFD models to optimize the operation of the installation. The data presented may help to improve and assess imaging techniques in real conditions in urban environments.</p><p>The dataset is a result from the Joint Research Activity 3 (WP8, Improving Resilience and Sustainability in Urban Drainage solutions), Task 8.3.1. (Hydrodynamic design for stormwater detention ponds optimized for cost-efficient maintenance) within Co-UDlabs project, funded under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement No 101008626. </p>

Data from: Carry-over effects of seasonal migration on reproductive success through breeding site retention in a partially migratory bird
<p>Understanding the maintenance and dynamics of phenotypic polymorphisms requires unpicking key ecological mechanisms shaping the fitness costs and benefits of expressing alternative phenotypes, generating selection. Seasonal migration versus year-round residence expressed in partially migratory populations represents one common polymorphism that can experience strong selection through differential reproductive success. Yet, key hypothesised pathways that could generate such selection remain to be empirically tested.</p> <p>One hypothesis is that migratory tactics affect subsequent reproductive success through carry-over effects on breeding site retention and resulting breeding dispersal. By remaining in breeding areas all year round, residents could retain their preferred breeding site between years, and consequently have higher reproductive success. Conversely, migrants that escape harsh non-breeding season conditions could return in better condition, with high resource holding potential, and outcompete residents to retain their site. Such effects could further depend on migration timing and vary between years. Yet, such pathways have not been quantified, precluding empirical parameterisation of partial migration theory. </p> <p>We used four years of breeding and non-breeding season data from partially migratory European shags (<em>Gulosus aristotelis</em>) to test whether the three most frequent migratory tactics in this population (full resident, early migrant departing soon after breeding, and late migrant departing in late autumn) differed in their breeding site retention; whether site retention predicted reproductive success; and hence whether effects of migratory tactic on reproductive success were explicable through site retention.</p> <p>Overall, residents were much more likely to retain their breeding site between years than both early and late migrants, and site retention was associated with increased reproductive success. Yet, these effects varied somewhat among years: late migrants were always least likely to retain their site but had variable relative reproductive success. Path analyses revealed that effects of migratory tactic on reproductive success were only partly attributable to breeding site retention.</p> <p>These results indicate that multiple mechanisms underlie reproductive selection on migratory tactics, potentially contributing to maintaining behavioural polymorphisms. Yet, the clear associations between migratory tactics and local breeding dispersal reveal that these movements can be strongly interlinked across seasons, shaping overall spatio-seasonal dynamics in partially migratory systems.</p>
