Data from "Examining potential PFAS Contamination of Private Wells from a High School in Rural Maine"
Data from "Schools as Sources of PFAS Contamination of private wells in Rural Maine communities" In a community-engaged research project near Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor, Maine, efforts were made to understand potential well contamination. This involved attending public meetings, distributing PFAS drinking water sample kits to homeowners, and collaborating on sample collection protocols. Surface water samples were collected from wetlands adjacent to the school, while drinking water samples were obtained from eight property owners, with careful adherence to sampling procedures to prevent contamination. Samples were analyzed for PFAS content and data are reported here.

Characteristics of Marginalised Rural Areas in Europe and the Mediterranean Region: Shapeflie and associated attributes
<p>The H2020 project on Social Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas (SIMRA) focused on understanding social innovation and innovative governance in agriculture, forestry and rural development, and how to boost them, particularly in marginalised rural areas across Europe, with a focus on the Mediterranean region (including non-EU). Its geographic focus was on Marginalised Rural Areas (MRAs), which had not previously been defined.</p> <p>The analysis of the rural areas of Europe and the Mediterranean area required data of consistent spatial and temporal resolutions for variables of three types: physical geography, infrastructure (spatial marginality), and socio-economic (societal marginality). There few datasets of relevance that exist for the entire area, creating a need to derive spatial datasets and produce associated maps of the characteristics that contribute to marginality or marginalization.</p> <p>The outputs comprise new spatial datasets at resolutions compatible with the underlying information (e.g. 1km2, NUTS 3, NUTS 2, and local authorities in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean), enabling comparisons between such areas. The associated maps and a tabulation of the characteristics for the entire area of interest to SIMRA are reported in Price et al. (2017).</p> <p>This spatial dataset contains the characteristics of the Marginalised Rural Areas as attributes in a Shapefle for use in a Geographic Information System. Cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the impact on children's linear growth of an unconditional cash transfer program implemented in rural areas of North Togo

Social determinants of Covid-19 infection and death in a rural Indonesia: A rapid healthcare assessment
<p>Understanding the social determinants of Covid-19 infection and death is vital for effective Covid-19 early detection and mitigation strategies. This study aims to examine social determinants of Covid-19 infection and death in the context of rural Indonesia. We used Malang district government Covid-19 contact tracing data from 14,264 individuals, spanning the period from March 1, 2020 to July 29, 2020. The contact tracing data was merged with administrative data from 390 villages to determine whether village characteristics (i.e., the number of health workers, number of community-based healthcare interventions, access to Covid-19 referred hospitals, number of indigenous socio-cultural activities, poverty level and distance to a Covid-19 epicentre city) are associated with Covid-19 infection and death. We used multilevel logistic regression to take advantage of the nested structure of data at the village level. We found among the 14,264 samples, 551 individuals were confirmed infected with Covid-19, and 62 died of Covid-19. Individuals aged 18 and older, civil servants (non-health workers), and those having close contact with people with confirmed cases had a higher likelihood of infection with Covid-19. Greater numbers of community-based healthcare interventions and a lesser distance to a pandemic epicentre reduced the likelihood of infection with the virus. Males, older people, individuals with hypertension, individuals diagnosed with pneumonia, and those diagnosed with respiratory failure had a higher likelihood of death due to Covid-19. A greater number of community-based healthcare interventions seems to reduce the likelihood of Covid-19 infection, while better access to a Covid-19 referred hospital seems to reduce the risk of death among Covid-19 patients. The findings suggest the government to prioritise strategies to control the pandemic in rural area through empowering rural community in health education to prevent Covid-19 and in monitoring people mobility, while providing Covid-19 emergency services for rural areas for reducing mortality.</p>
Data from: Quantifying nectar production by flowering plants in urban and rural landscapes
<p>Floral resources (nectar and pollen) provide food for insect pollinators but have declined in the countryside due to land use change. Given widespread pollinator loss, it is important that we quantify their food supply to help develop conservation actions. While nectar resources have been measured in rural landscapes, equivalent data are lacking for urban areas, an important knowledge gap as towns and cities often host diverse pollinator populations.</p> <p>We quantified the nectar supply of urban areas, farmland and nature reserves in the UK by combining floral abundance and nectar sugar production data for 536 flowering plant taxa, allowing us to compare landscape types and assess the spatial distribution of nectar sugar among land uses within cities.</p> <p>The magnitude of nectar sugar production did not differ significantly among the three landscapes. In urban areas the nectar supply was more diverse in origin and predominantly delivered by non-native flowering plants. Within cities, urban land uses varied greatly in nectar sugar production. Gardens provided the most nectar sugar per unit area and 85% of all nectar at a city scale, while gardens and allotments produced the most diverse supplies of nectar sugar. Floral abundance, commonly used as a proxy for pollinators' food supply, correlated strongly with nectar resources, but left a substantial proportion of the variation in nectar supply unexplained.</p> <p>Synthesis. We show that urban areas are hotspots of floral resource diversity rather than quantity and their nectar supply is underpinned by the contribution of residential gardens. Individual gardeners have an important role to play in pollinator conservation as ornamental plants, usually non-native in origin, are a key source of nectar in towns and cities.</p>
Community assets and relative rurality index
<p>The CARR (Community assets and relative rurality index) index is a continuous, multidimensional measure of rurality based on the concept of sustainable development that integrates measures of environmental, social, and economic resources. The index incorporates traditional rurality measures such as population density, distance from metropolitan areas, and developed area with measures of availability and accessibility of 70 different infrastructure types that support essential community services and community amenities. The index uses data last updated in 2019 and is available for census block-groups in the coterminous United States.</p> <p>This repository includes versions of CARR calculated for block groups (original) and versions of CARR aggregated to other conventional spatial units using and area-weighted averaging approach on the original block group data. Each zip folder includes the raw data, a metadata file, and a basic exploratory data analysis document in html format.</p> <p>The information for Version 2 of this repository, and additional information on CARR, can also be found at <a href="ruralityindex.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruralityindex.com</a>.</p>
