Comparison of the costs of HPV testing through Community health campaigns versus Home-based testing in rural western Kenya: A micro-costing study

Objectives: To estimate the cost of HPV-based screening through Community health campaigns (CHCs) and home-based testing.

Setting: Community health campaigns (CHCs) and home-based testing in six communities in rural western Kenya.

Participants: CHCs and home-based screening reached 2297 and 1002 women aged 25 to 65 years respectively.

Outcome measures: Outcome measures were overall cost per woman screened achieved through the CHCs and home-based testing, and the cost per woman for each activity comprising the screening intervention.

Results: The mean cost per woman screened through CHCs and home-based testing were similar, at $37.7 (range $26.4 - $52.0) and $37.1 (range $27.6 - $54.0), respectively. For CHCs, personnel represented 49% of overall cost, supplies 25%, services 5%, and capital goods 23%. For home-based testing, these were: personnel 73%, supplies 25%, services 1%, and capital goods 2%. A greater number of participants was associated with a lower cost per participant.

Conclusions: The mean cost per woman screened is comparable for CHC and home-based testing, with differences in type of input. The CHCs generally reached more eligible women in the 6 communities, whereas home-based strategies more efficiently reached populations with low screening rates.

Data from: Vertebrate community composition and diversity declines along a defaunation gradient radiating from rural villages in Gabon

Anthropocene defaunation is the global phenomenon of human-induced animal biodiversity loss. Understanding the patterns and process of defaunation is critical to predict outcomes for wildlife populations and cascading consequences for ecosystem function and human welfare. We investigated a defaunation gradient in northeastern Gabon by establishing 24 transects at varying distances (2–30 km) to rural villages and surveying the abundance and composition of vertebrate communities. Distance from village was positively correlated with observations of hunting (shotgun shells, campfires, hunters), making it a good proxy for hunting pressure. Species diversity declined significantly with proximity to village, with mammal richness increasing by roughly 1.5 species every 10 km travelled away from a village. Compared to forest far from villages, the wildlife community near villages consisted of higher abundances of large birds and rodents and lower abundances of large mammals like monkeys and ungulates. Distance to nearest village emerged as a key driver of the relative abundance of five of the six taxonomic guilds, indicating that the top–down force of hunting strongly influences large vertebrate community composition and structure. Several measures of vegetation structure also explained animal abundance, but these varied across taxonomic guilds. Forest elephants were the exception: no measured variable or combination of variables explained variation in elephant abundances. Synthesis and applications. Hunting is concentrated within 10 km around villages, creating a hunting halo characterized by heavily altered animal communities composed of relatively small-bodied species. Although the strongest anthropogenic effects are relatively distance-limited, the linear increase in species richness shown here even at distances 30 km from villages suggests that hunting may have altered vertebrate abundances across the entire landscape. Central African forests store >25% of the carbon in tropical forests and are home to 3000 endemic species, but roughly 53% of the region lies within the village hunting halo. Resource management strategies should take into account this hunting-induced spatial variation in animal communities. Near villages, resource management should focus on sustainable community-led hunting programs that provide long-term supplies of wild meat to rural people. Resource management far from villages should focus on law enforcement and promoting industry practices that maintain remote tracts of land to preserve ecosystem services like carbon storage and biodiversity.

Deforestation: An implication of high rates of unemployed and low-Income household members in rural communities in Kebbi, Nigeria

Deforestation has been a major environmental issue in Northern Nigeria and despite several advocacy, yet such practice has continued to endure. A root course factors are unemployment and low-income among households in Northern Nigeria. As a result of low social/financial status of the household, they depend highly on cutting down trees to make fuel wood (firewood) and charcoal (gotten from burnt wood) for the source of energy for their domestic and commercial activities. This was proven by the analysis of a secondary dataset using R-Programming, sourced from the World Bank Microdata Library, a survey carried out in 2015 in Kebbi, Nigeria titled Nigeria-Feed the Future Livelihood Project 2015, Baseline Survey worldbank.org. The dataset contains 3976 households observed and 296 values were found missing which resulted to analyzing 3758 household after the missing values were omitted. Variables describing the employed members of the household, energy sources for lighting fuel and energy sources for cooking fuel for the households were extracted from the secondary dataset. Results revealed that there are over 3000 households dependent on fuel wood as an energy source. Also, results (ANOVA) revealed that annual income of the households has significant impact on cooking fuel sources (0.0104<0.05) and has a very strong significance on lighting fuel sources (0.000<0.05). The low-income rate of households was evident showing the relationship between employed members of the households with a very strong significance on annual income of the households (0.000375<0.05). This revealed that unemployed members of the households results to low-income of the households in Kebbi make them to highly depend on the use of fuel wood (firewood) and charcoal (gotten from burnt wood) on a dialy bases as a source of energy for cooking and lighting fuel. They also export and sell fuel wood and charcoal for financial gain to neighboring countries.

Data from: Socio-economic impacts of energy access through off-grid systems in rural communities: A case study of South-West Nigeria

The development of resilient energy systems is important for sustainable cities and communities. However, in countries with insufficient national energy supply, electricity distributors rarely consider remote communities due to their distant settlement, low electricity demand and poor payment capabilities. The United Nations has set a goal to deliver universal energy access by 2030, hence, it has become imperative to deploy clean and affordable off-grid mini-grid solutions to previously abandoned communities. Access to energy in rural communities is expected to result in unlocking their economic potentials. This paper investigates the impact of a solar hybrid mini-grid on the socio-economic growth of local entrepreneurs in Gbamu Gbamu village, Nigeria. A total of 83 Micro and Small Enterprises has been surveyed, descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-test, cross-tabulation, and Chi-square test, were used to assess the performance of businesses before and after electrification. The outcomes include the number of business enterprises created, employment statistics, energy expenses and income generated. Regression analysis was conducted on the relationship between the average income generated by businesses and independent socio-economic variables such as gender, marital status, household size, age, education level, years of business establishment, hours of operation, building tenure, capital source, number of employees, generator ownership and the days of operation.
