Fall 2004 plant monitoring survey -- shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10

A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2004 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.

Genetic Relationships Between Terminal Shoot Length, Number of Flushes and Height in a Four-Year-old Progeny Test of Pinus brutia Ten.

Description of the data

A total of 188 plus trees were selected from eight natural seed stands of Pinus brutia in the Aegean region of Turkey. The number of trees selected per seed stand (provenance) varied between 7 to 53 trees. Open-pollinated seeds were collected from plus trees in 1998 and in 1999. In addition, six checklots consisting of bulk seeds from natural seed stands were included in the study to estimate genetic gain and link the progeny tests across different breeding zones in the Aegean region.

Open-pollinated progeny tests were established at three locations in the Aegean region of Turkey (Hisaronu, Izmir, and Kinik) in March 2000. One-year-old bare-root seedlings were used in the study. Randomized complete block design with four-tree row plots was used in all sites. For each plus tree (female parent), about 72 half-sib progenies were planted across three test sites. The Hisaronu site had four blocks, while two other sites had seven blocks each. Each parent tree was represented by 16 half-sib progenies at the Hisaronu site and 28 progenies in the other two sites when the trials were planted. The spacing among seedlings was 2 x 3 m at each site. Each block was split into four sets (sets in replications) to accommodate a large number of trees, with checklots included in every set. In total, about 166 half-sib progenies and checklots were planted in each block.

At the end of the first growing year after planting, survival was assessed. It was about 52% at the Hisaronu site. Dead seedlings at the Hisaronu site were replaced with 1083 two-year-old seedlings of the same families, which were grown in a nursery near Marmaris in the Aegean region. The other two sites had 91% (İzmir) and 94% (Kinik) survival. At age four after planting (2004), tree height (cm), terminal shoot length (cm), and the number of flushes were measured. In total, approximately 12100 trees were assessed across the three locations.

Growth of wild cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) in three variants of support (5, 20, 50 cm) and shoot geometry

The experiments included three variants of support: 5 cm, 20 cm, and 50 cm. The data was collected in the years 2020-2023. After developing their first pair of mature leaves, when the plants were about 20-35 cm in length, the plants were photographed. The shutter was released every 15 minutes. The resulting images were combined into a 10 fps video. The following were used for the analysis: 13 recordings of the 5 cm variant and 12 recordings of the 20 and 50 cm variants.

Next, an analysis was performed based on the resulting video using Tracker for kinetic analysis of video objects. The recordings were used to measure the plant growth parameters. The tape measure and point mass tools were used to determine the length of the shoots and to change the position of the apex relative to the areas of the X- and Y-axis photographed over time. To compensate for this, a trend line was drawn (polynomial of the 2nd degree, due to the very good fit, R2 = 0,975–0,995) and new plant length parameters were calculated.

To enhance the research, cross-sections of the shoots of ten plants were scanned. Samples were taken every 5 cm from the base of the plant. Using ImageJ the following parameters were measured: shoot cross-sectional area, tissue area, perimeter, and circularity.

Harvest data including the shoot leaf area index, position in the canopy, and shoot and plant tissue area, count and mass for each shoot harvested at three levels in the canopy from 19 1m x 1m plots near LTER Shrub plots, Toolik Field Station, AK 2012.

Leaf and plant tissue area and mass from shoots harvested from 19 1m x 1m point frame plots near Toolik Field Station, AK during the summer of 2012. Six shoots were harvested from each plot, two from each canopy layer: upper, middle, and low. Each shoot came from a different plant, and the species selected was based on the species dominant in that canopy layer. The leaf area and mass were used to correct A/Ci and light response curves taken on each shoot [data published separately]. At the time of collection, the location relative to the point frame, height, and leaf area index (LAI) of each shoot was measured; those data are included here.

A/Ci curve parameters measured from shoots harvested at three levels in the canopy from 19 1m x 1m plots dominated by S. pulchra and B. nana shrubs near LTER Shrub plots at Toolik Field Station, AK the summer of 2012.

A/Ci curve parameters and modeled carboxylation, electron transport, and triose-phosphate utilization efficiency rates from shoots clipped from low, mid, and the top of tall, shrub canopies dominated either by Salix pulchra or Betula nana species. Six shoots were harvested from each 1m x 1m plot, two from each level in the canopy. These plots were located near the LTER shrub plots at the Toolik Field Staion, AK for point frame measurements, and all measurements took place the summer of 2012. The species harvested were chosen based on the species present in each plot, thus the species from each segment of the canopy may not be the same. Additional information about each shoot can be found in the "PF_ShootLightcurve_Data" and "PF_ShootHarvest_Data" pages, regarding the light response curves, area, mass, leaf area index, and leaf nitrogen content of each shoot. The file "PF_PercentCover" contains the species cover data for each plot.
