Reverberant Magnetic Resonance Elastographic Using a single Mechanical Driver

Reverberant elastography provides fast and robust estimates of shear modulus. However, reverberant elastography uses multiple mechanical drivers, hampering clinical utility. In this work, we hypothesize that a single mechanical driver can generate reverberant shear fields in constrained organs such as the brain. To corroborate this hypothesis, we imaged the brain of a healthy volunteer; and two constrained phantoms containing spherical inclusions with diameters ranging from 4-18 mm. As a secondary goal, we assessed the feasibility of recovering shear modulus from a single component of the reverberant wave field. Viable reverberant and subzone elastograms were produced only when obtained at 50 and 100 Hz in phantoms. Different levels of reverberance were exhibited in different displacement components (70-82% for phantoms and 87-93% for the clinical case); however, wavefields obtained when imaging at 50 Hz and 100 Hz were not significantly different (p>0.05). Errors incurred in reverberant elastograms varied from 5% to 65% when imaging at 50 Hz and 2% to 55% when imaging at 100 Hz. Errors incurred in subzone elastograms ranged from 4% to 18% at 50 Hz and 5% and 50% at 100 Hz. The contrast-to-noise ratio of reverberant elastograms ranged from 20 dB to 44 dB compared to 25 dB to 31 dB in subzone elastograms. The accuracy of the elastograms acquired from the phantom containing internal shear wave reflectors did not differ noticeably. The global brain stiffness estimated from reverberant and subzone elastograms was 2.36 ± 0.95 kPa and 2.5 ± 1.1 kPa, respectively, when imaging at 50 Hz, and 2.56 ± 0.828 kPa and 2.89 ± 1.3 kPa respectively, when imaging at 70 Hz. The phantom study revealed that performance varied depending on the component of displacement used to compute reverberant elastograms; however, the clinical study demonstrated similar performance of reverberant and subzone elastograms

Supplementary materials to: Nano-Strainer: a workflow for identification of single-copy nuclear loci for plant systematic studies, using target capture kits and Oxford Nanopore long reads

In the paper associated with this dataset, a workflow is presented which enables the identification of single-/low-copy nuclear molecular markers for a plant group of interest, by mining data from a small representative target capture experiment done using a commercial probe kit and Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing. The proposed pipeline first assesses sequence variability contained in the data from targeted loci and assigns reads to their respective genes, via a combined BLAST/clustering procedure. Cluster consensus sequences are then examined based on four pre-defined criteria presumably indicative for absence of paralogy. This is done by calculating four specialized indices; loci are ranked according to their performance in these indices, and top-scoring loci are considered putatively single- or low-copy. The approach can be applied to any probe set. As it relies on long reads, the contribution also provides template workflows for processing Nanopore-based target capture data. Identified loci can be used for NGS amplicon sequencing. For detection of possibly remaining paralogy in these data, which might occur in groups with rampant paralogy, the long-read assembly tool CANU is employed. The presented workflow can be useful for researchers dealing with reticulate or polyploidization phylogenetic histories in plants.

The present dataset contains several documents supplementing the original paper. Its most important elements are a detailed description (alongside two graphical workflow figures) of all methods employed in the study, suitable for reproducing the steps of the workflow and also the wet-lab work. The workflow employs a collection of BASH, Python and R scripts which is available here, together with a detailed account on command line use in Linux. Also, reference sequences for the identified markers can be found as well as sequence alignments derived from the amplicon sequencing.

A before/after intervention study to determine impact on life cycle carbon footprint of converting from single-use to reusable sharps containers in 40 United Kingdom NHS Trusts

The purpose of this study was to compare Global Warming Potential (GWP) of hospitals converting from single-use to reusable sharps containers (SSC, RSC). Does conversion to RSC result in GWP reduction? Using BS PAS 2050:2011 principles, a retrospective, before/after intervention quantitative model together with a purpose-designed, attributional "cradle-to-grave" life cycle tool, were used to determine the annual GHG emissions of the two sharps containment systems. Functional unit was total fill-line litres (FLL) of sharps containers needed to dispose of sharps for one-year period in 40 trusts. Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions were included. Results were workload-normalised using NHS national hospital patient-workload indicators. A sensitivity analysis examined areas of data variability.

Setting. GHG as kg CO2e/1000 FLL were 313.0 and 50.7 for SSC and RSC systems respectively. A sensitivity analysis showed substantial GHG reductions within unit processes could be achieved, however their impact on relevant final GWP comparison varied <5% from base comparison. Adopting RSC is an example of a sustainable purchasing decision that can assist trusts meet NHS GHG reduction targets and can reduce GWP permanently with minimal staff behaviour-change.

Gathered datasets of cardiorespiratory activity by using the inductive coupling with single coil together with reference waveforms of ECG and spirometer

Hereby the datasets, that were gathered during the experiments of monitoring the cardiorespiratory activity by using the inductive coupling together with the reference waveforms of ECG and spirometer, are published.:
Waveforms of inductive monitoring.zip
Reference waveforms of ECG and spirometer.zip

A single volunteer participated in the experiments: healthy male, 33 years old, height of 183 cm and weight of 70 kg.

The results are gathered from 12 positions lying around the thorax in imaginary horizontal level, approximately 10 mm below xiphisternal joint. The central position on front side of thorax is designated according to xiphisternum. The central position on front side of thorax is designated according to backbone.

The datasets are available in .txt format, and are in separate .zip packages for inductive monitoring and reference waveforms. The correcponding dataset for every position can de identified by position number in both datasets. The signals are raw signals, not processed in any way.

In the case of inductive monitoring the change variation of equivalent parallel resonance impedance (Rp) is shown. Concerning the reference waveforms, in the case of ECG, the result is shown in voltages (V). The reference data of respiration (gathered by using spirometer) is available in the form of two sets of digital pulses (0-s and 1-s). These pulses are representing the inhalation and exhalation i.e. either the rotor of the spirometer turns in one way or another. According to the frequency of the pulses, depending on the air flowing speed, the respiratory waveform can be constructed.
