<p>The data contained here was gathered for a quantitative and qualitative-based study to investigate the attitudes, skills, and knowledge of primary and post-Primary teachers in Ireland in relation to the provision for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL). The data collection period will begin 20th January and the 20th February 2021 and was approved by UCC Social Research Ethics Committee (2021-232). A data codebook is also provided to support the interpretation of the data. </p>
Data from: Timing of departure from natal areas by Golden Eagles is not constrained by acquisition of flight skills
<p>The post-fledging dependence period (PFDP), which extends from a fledgling’s first flight out of the nest to its departure from the parents’ territory, is crucial in the lifecycle of birds. During this period, juveniles develop their flight and foraging skills to become fully independent. Despite the importance of this life stage in basic bird ecology and conservation, it remains largely overlooked – notably its link with the acquisition of flight skills. In this study, we modeled the variation in seven proxies describing flight skills of 84 GPS-tracked Golden Eagle juveniles in France between 2016 and 2020. Juveniles had a long but highly variable PFDP, averaging 177.9 (±62.2) days after departure from the nest. This period is divided into two phases: a first phase of rapid increase in flight skills over the first 60 days after departure from the nest, followed by a plateau in which flight skills no longer develop until independence. These results suggest that the full development of flight skills is not a constraining factor during the PFDP and that it is advantageous for juveniles to choose to remain in their natal territory. We posit that parents’ tolerance of fledged juveniles is a type of parental care that may maximize their own fitness by improving the survival of their descendants. In future studies, it may be of interest to investigate the factors that may explain the high variability in the duration of this stage between individuals within the same population.</p>

Unifying Skill-Based Programming and Programming by Demonstration through Ontologies
<p>Smart manufacturing requires easily reconfigurable robotic systems to increase the flexibility in presence of market uncertainties by reducing the set-up times for new tasks. One enabler of fast reconfigurability is given by intuitive robot programming methods.<br> On the one hand, offline, skill-based programming (OSP) allows the definition of new tasks by sequencing pre-defined, parameterizable building blocks termed as skills in a graphical user interface. On the other hand, Programming by Demonstration (PbD) is a well known technique that uses kinesthetic teaching for intuitive robot programming, where this work presents an approach to automatically recognize skills from the human demonstration and parameterize them using the recorded data. The approach further unifies both programming modes of OSP and PbD with the help of an ontological knowledge base and empowers the end user to choose the preferred mode for each phase of the task. In the experiments, we evaluate two scenarios with different sequences of programming modes being selected by the user to define a task. In each scenario, skills are recognized by a data-driven classifier and automatically parameterized from the recorded data. The fully defined tasks consist of both manually added and automatically recognized skills and are executed in the context of a realistic industrial assembly environment.</p>

Computers & Education.</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Despite the documented number of studies that investigate social media in teaching and learning settings, the topic of social media literacy is still an under-researched area. This study adopts the theoretical lens of New Literacy studies to suggest a combined perspective for investigating social media literacies. This perspective considers both social media skills that are transversal across different social media (global skills) or that pertain to a specific social media platform (local skills). It examines practices that are decontextualized (literacy as something to be acquired) or situated and context-dependent (literacy through participation). To map current research on social media skills, a systematic literature review was conducted. Analysis of 54 publications was carried out following the UNESCO DLGF framework for digital literacy competencies, and also using a critical lens based on four metaphors whereby, for learning purposes, social media are seen as a <em>tool</em>, as a <em>process</em>, as <em>collaboration</em>, and as <em>participation</em>. The results show that most of the studies consider global social media skills, while only a few examine skills sets specific to a particular social media platform. Besides, most of the identified skills concern decontextualized practices, with very few studies emphasizing the importance of fostering situated social media practices. We conclude that there is a need for more expansive theoretical elaboration in the field, and provide a number of recommendations for investigating, understanding, and designing educational curricula and activities that support the development of social media literacy.</p>
Changes in participant behaviour and attitudes are associated with knowledge and skills gained by using a turtle conservation citizen science app
Citizen science has become a popular way to collect biodiversity data and engage the wider public in scientific research. It has the potential to improve the knowledge and skills of participants, and positively change their behaviour and attitude towards the environment. Citizen science outcomes are particularly valuable for wildlife conservation, as they could help alleviate human impacts on the environment. We used an online questionnaire to investigate the consequences of participating in an Australian turtle mapping app, TurtleSAT, on skills and knowledge gain, and test for any association between these gains with behavioural or attitudinal changes reported by the participants. 148 citizen scientists completed our questionnaire, mostly from the states of New South Wales and Victoria. Participants listed TurtleSAT as the third most common source of knowledge about turtle ecology and conservation, after a talk about turtles and personal observations/research. Citizen scientists who participated more often were more knowledgeable about turtles than infrequent users. Self-reported gains in knowledge and skills were positively linked to attitudinal and behavioural changes, such as being more aware of turtles on roads. However, behaviour and attitude changes were not related to participation rate. Respondents also reported that after learning about the current decline in turtle populations, they adopted several turtle-friendly practices, such as habitat restoration or moving turtles out of harm's way, underlining the importance of increasing people's awareness on species declines. The reported changes in attitudes and behaviours are likely to positively impact the conservation of Australian freshwater turtles. Engagement with citizen science projects like TurtleSAT may result in participants being more interested in the natural world, by learning more about it and being more exposed to it, and therefore contribute more actively to its protection.
Neural ensemble reactivation in REM and SWS coordinate with muscle activity to promote rapid motor skill learning
<p>Neural activity patterns of recent experiences are reactivated during sleep in structures critical for memory storage, including hippocampus and neocortex. This reactivation process is thought to aid memory consolidation. Although synaptic rearrangement dynamics following learning involve an interplay between slow-wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM), most physiological evidence implicates SWS directly following experience as a preferred window for reactivation. Here we show that reactivation occurs in both REM and SWS, and that coordination of REM and SWS activation on the same day is associated with rapid learning of a motor skill. We performed 6-hour recordings from cells in rats' motor cortex as they were trained daily on a skilled reaching task. In addition to SWS following training, reactivation occurred in REM, primarily during the pre-task rest period, and REM and SWS reactivation occurred on the same day in rats that acquired the skill rapidly. Both pre-task REM and posttask SWS activation were coordinated with muscle activity during sleep, suggesting a functional role for reactivation in skill learning. Our results provide the first demonstration that reactivation in REM sleep occurs during motor skill learning, and that coordinated reactivation in both sleep states on the same day, although at different times, is beneficial for skill learning.</p>

The trench was roughly rectangular in shape and approximately 30m long and 15m wide, and machine-excavated down to the first archaeological horizon. The trench was then hand-excavated, with archaeological features clarified, excavated and recorded. This is housed on the project microsite https://digventures.com/earth-trust. The earliest archaeological feature encountered was a Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pit in the southeast part of the site. The majority of features investigated dated to the Early or Middle Iron Age with a noticeable lack of material dating to the Late Iron Age. Special deposits of pottery were found in three Iron Age pits. These pits contained very large assemblages of pottery in good condition, including near-complete vessels and a decorated bowl. Exceptional multi-year prediction skill of the Kuroshio Extension in the high-resolution CESM decadal prediction system
The Kuroshio Extension (KE) has far-reaching influences on climate as well as on local marine ecosystems. Thus, skillful multi-year to decadal prediction of the KE state and understanding sources of skill are valuable. Retrospective forecasts using the high-resolution CESM show exceptional skill in predicting KE variability up to lead year 4, substantially higher than the skill found in a similarly configured low-resolution CESM. The higher skill is attained because the high-resolution system can more realistically simulate the westward Rossby wave propagation of initialized ocean anomalies in the central North Pacific and their expression within the sharp KE front, and does not suffer from spurious variability near Japan present in the low-resolution CESM that interferes with the incoming wave propagation. These results argue for the use of high-resolution models for future studies that aim to predict changes in western boundary current systems and associated biological fields.
