Daily summarized seasonal measurements of discharge, water temperature, and specific conductivity from Santa Fe Stream at B2, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2000)

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the daily hydrological summaries for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Santa Fe Stream at the B2 streamgage, located in the Bonney Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1993-94 austral summer and continued through the end of the 1999-20 austral summer. The B2 streamgage was removed in December 2000 after it was found completely underwater due to Lake Bonney water level rise. Efforts were made to continue some discrete flow measurements to estimate flow in Santa Fe Stream based on the flow record at the higher elevation streamgage located in nearby Lawson Creek. Thus, Santa Fe Stream transitioned from being continuously monitored to one for which discrete measurements of flow may be made during site visits to Lawson Creek.

PIE LTER year 2016, 15 minute measurements of specific conductance, water temperature in a small headwater stream draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential), Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA.

Year 2016, continuous measurements, every 15 minutes were made of conductivity, water temperature in a small headwater stream, Saw Mill Brook, Burlington, MA, draining a highly suburban catchment (72% residential) in the Ipswich River watershed. Due to sedimentation within the datalogger housing, there are periods when the datalogger lost hydrological connection with the stream (i.e., during low flow). As such, data has been flagged to remove these erroneous readings.

Sodium, chloride and specific conductance in stream water and groundwater in New Hampshire 1991, 2000 – 2021

Stream water was collected at weekly to monthly intervals at 29 stream sites in New Hampshire (USA). Ten of the stream sites were instrumented with high‐frequency sensors. Twenty-one of the stream sites (including 5 sensor sites) are in the Lamprey River Hydrologic Observatory (LRHO; Wymore et al 2021) and two stream sites were nearby the LRHO. Groundwater was collected from two riparian well fields (JF, 14 wells and WHB, 13 wells). Wells were installed in 2004 and sampled monthly through May 2007, then quarterly until December 2009, after which a subset (JF, 6 and WHB, 5) was generally sampled quarterly. Stream and groundwater samples span a 17-year collection period and were analyzed for sodium, chloride and specific conductance. Methods and findings are described in the associated Limnology and Oceanography Letters manuscript.

High-frequency water quality data for water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, pH, phycocyanin fluorescence and chlorophyll a fluorescence at Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA, 2011-2017.

From 2011 to 2017, an instrumented buoy maintained by Friends of the Lake (FOTL, friendsofthelake.org) and Fairfield University was deployed on Lake Lillinonah (Connecticut, USA) during the summer months to collect high-frequency water quality data. The buoy was deployed early each summer and remained in the lake until late October. The instrumented buoy was equipped with a YSI 6600 sonde at a depth of 1 meter. The YSI 6600 collected water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, pH, chlorophyll a fluorescence and phycocyanin fluorescence data. Additionally, the instrumented buoy is equipped with an In-Situ RDO sensor which collects water temperature and dissolved oxygen readings at a depth of 15 meters. Included in this data package are datasets containing 15-minute data as well as daily averages from all sensors. Following the summer of 2017, the YSI 6600 sonde was replaced with a YSI EXO2 sonde which collected data on the same variables. Data from the YSIEXO2 sonde, as well as data from the In-Situ RDO sensor during the same period, are available in the EDI data package EDI560. Additionally, the instrumented buoy at Lake Lillinonah is equipped with a water temperature thermistor chain . These data can be found in data packages EDI557 (2011-2015) and EDI558 (2018-current).

Weekly grab samples and manual specific conductivity, temperature, and turbidity measurements were taken at 21 streams and rivers in Macon County, NC. Nine intensive sites were monitored weekly in 2010-2011, nine hillslope sites were monitored biweekly in 2012-2013, and three river sites were monitored weekly in 2010-2011 and biweekly in 2012-2013. Data from a brief study of three streams at the Buck Creek Pine Barrens in Clay County, NC, also was completed, as well as one grab sample at Porters Creek, Mountain View Intermediate School. Water samples were analyzed for chemistry at the Coweeta Analytical Lab. Specific conductivity and temperature data were collected using a YSI 30 handheld conductivity meter. Turbidity data were collected using a Hach 2100P turbidimeter.

Continuous soil temperature, specific conductance, and volumetric water content measurements from the F6 Active Layer Monitoring Station (ALMS01), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2014-2021, ongoing)

As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, five Active Layer Monitoring Stations (ALMSs) were established throughout Taylor Valley, Antarctica to support new research foci around the thermal-moisture dynamics of soils that may control habitat conditions and faunal responses to seasonal and annual freezing cycles in this ecosystem. Two ALMSs were established adjacent to streams (Green Creek, Von Guerard Stream), with sensors installed through the active layer from the thalweg out to the shoreline and dry soil beyond. Two ALMSs were similarly established adjacent to water tracks (Wormherder Creek, Water Track B) that are zero-order drainages of snow and ice melt that rarely have surface flow. The remaining station was established in dry soil (F6) to serve as an ambient control. ALMSs measure soil temperature, soil moisture (as volumetric water content; VWC), and specific conductance (as electrical conductivity; EC) through the active layer (soil surface down to the frost table) at several locations from the water’s edge to dry soils. This data package contains measurements from the Active Layer Monitoring Station at F6 (ALMS01), located on the south shore of Lake Fryxell.
