Surface emissivity of Mars from MGS Thermal Emission Spectrometer, sampled to Mars Odyssey THEMIS bands 3-9

These maps are described in Pankine et al. (submitted to Planetary and Space Science). Surface emissivity was derived from MGS TES data, and then binned at a spatial resolution of 8 pixels-per-degree. The binned surface emissivity was then convolved to THEMIS spectral bandpasses between bands 3-9 (~7.9 to 12.5 microns).

Each map covers the range -180 to 180 degrees longitude, and -70 to 70 degrees latitude. Null data values are set to zero.

A longitudinal offset of 0.271 degrees was applied so that the maps align with data sets that use the IAU 2000 prime meridian.

These products may be uploaded as custom maps into the JMARS GIS software.

Dataset: The Far-INfrarEd Spectrometer for Surface Emissivity (FINESSE) Part II: First measurements of the emissivity of water in the far-infrared.

This repository contains callibrated radiance measurements from the FINESSE instrument and related auxilary files as referenced in the article "The Far-INfrarEd Spectrometer for Surface Emissivity (FINESSE) Part II: First measurements of the emissivity of water in the far-infrared." by Warwick, L., Murray, J. and Brindley, H.

In this paper we describe a method for retrieving surface emissivity across the wavenumber range 400-1600 cm-1 using novel radiance measurements from the Far INfrarEd Spectrometer for Surface Emissivity (FINESSE) instrument. FINESSE is described in detail in part I of the paper. We apply the method to two sets of measurements of distilled water. The first set of emissivity retrievals is of distilled water heated above ambient temperature to enhance the signal to noise ratio. The second set of emissivity retrievals is of ambient temperate water at a range of viewing angles. In both cases the observations agree well with calculations based on compiled refractive indices across the mid and far-infrared. It is found that the reduced contrast between the up and downwelling radiation in the ambient temperature case degrades the performance of the retrieval. Therefore a filter is developed to target regions of high contrast which improves the agreement between the ambient temperature emissivity retrieval and the predicted emissivity. These retrievals are, to the best of our knowledge, the first published retrievals of the emissivity of water that extend into the far-infrared and demonstrate a method that can be used for the in-situ retrieval of the emissivity of other surfaces in the field.

Evaluation of MEMS NIR spectrometers for on-farm analysis of raw milk composition

Today, measurement of raw milk quality and composition relies on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to monitor and improve dairy production and cow health. However, these laboratory analyzers are bulky, expensive and can only be used by experts. Moreover, the sample logistics and data transfer delay the information on product quality, and the measures taken to optimize the care and feeding of the cattle rendering them less suitable for real-time monitoring. An on-farm spectrometer with compact size and affordable cost could bring a solution for this discrepancy. This paper evaluates the performance of Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (MEMS) based near-infrared (NIR) spectrometers as on-farm milk analysers. These spectrometers use Fabry-Pérot interferometers for wavelength tuning, giving them the advantage of very compact size and affordable price. This study discusses the ability of MEMS spectrometers to reach the accuracy limits set by ICAR for at-line analyzers of the milk content regarding fat, protein and lactose. According to achieved results, the transmission measurements with the NIRONE2.5 spectrometer perform best, with an acceptable root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP=0.21% w/w) for the measurement of milk fat and excellent performance (RMSEP≤0.11% w/w) for protein and lactose. In addition, the transmission measurements using the NIRONE2.0 module give similar results for fat and lactose (RMSEP of 0.21 and 0.10% w/w respectively), while the prediction of protein is slightly deteriorated (RMSEP=0.15% w/w). These results show that the MEMS spectrometers can reach sufficient accuracy for at-line and in-line fat, protein and lactose prediction.

ATom: L2 Measurements from CU High-Resolution Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-AMS)

This dataset provides the atmospheric concentrations of separated ions from inorganic and organic species measured by the High-Resolution Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-AMS) collected during flights of the NASA ATom Mission. Data are available from all four ATom Campaigns. The HR-AMS detects non-refractory submicron aerosol composition by impaction on a vaporizer at 600 degrees C, followed by electron ionization and time-of-flight mass spectral analysis. The measurements include chemically speciated submicron non-refractory particulate mass at a one second and 60 second resolution, and the size distribution of chemically speciated submicron non-refractory particulate mass at 60 second resolution.

ATom: Nucleation Mode Aerosol Size Spectrometer Calibration and Performance Data

This dataset provides extensive calibration and in-flight performance data for two nucleation mode aerosol size spectrometer (NMASS) instruments utilized in the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom). Each NMASS has five condensation particle counters (CPCs) that detect particles above a different minimum size, determined by the maximum vapor supersaturation encountered by the particles. Operated in parallel, the CPCs provide continuous concentrations of particles in different cumulative size classes between 3 and 60 nm. Knowing the response function of each CPC, numerical inversion techniques were applied to recover size distributions from the continuous concentrations. Data provided include: NMASS counting efficiencies and diameters of calibration aerosols, inverted particle size distributions; comparisons of NMASS and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) results; and performance at flows, temperatures, and pressures measured by both NMASSs and comparison with Ultra-High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS) concentrations collected on board the NASA DC-8 aircraft during an ATom flight in February 2017.

CLAMS ER-2 Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Airborne Simulator (MAS)

CLAMS_ER2_MAS data were collected during the Chesapeake Lighthouse and Aircraft Measurements for Satellites (CLAMS) experiment with the objective to combine long term ocean spectral surface observations with satellite and aircraft measurements to enhance our knowledge of ocean surface reflections and aerosols. The MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS) is an airborne scanning spectrometer that acquires high spatial resolution imagery of cloud and surface features from its vantage point on-board a NASA ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. Data acquired by the MAS help to define, develop, and test algorithms for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), a key sensor of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS). The MODIS program emphasizes the use of remotely sensed data to monitor variation in environmental conditions for assessing both natural and human-induced global change. The MAS spectrometer acquires high spatial resolution imagery in the range of 0.55 to 14.3 microns. A total of 50 spectral bands are available in this range. Pre-1995 the digitizer was configured for each mission to record a pre-selected group of 12 bands during the flight. For most of these missions the digitizer was configured to record four 10-bit channels and seven 8-bit channels. A 50-channel digitizer which records all 50 spectral bands at 12 bit resolution became operational in January 1995.The MAS spectrometer is mated to a scanner sub-assembly which collects image data with an IFOV of 2.5 mrad, giving a ground resolution of 50 meters from 20000 meters altitude, and a cross track scan width of 85.92 degrees.
