<p>This is the dataset of electrochemical measurements for our publication "Towards reliable three-electrode cells for lithium–sulfur batteries". This archive contains the raw data and scripts written in R used in the analysis and presentation of the results in this manuscript.</p> <p>Abstract of the manuscript:</p> <p>Three-electrode measurements are valuable to the understanding of the electrochemical processes in a battery system. However, their application in lithium–sulfur chemistry is difficult due to the complexity of the system and thus rarely reported. Here, we present a simple three-electrode cell format with relatively good life time and minimum interference with the cell operation. </p>
Estimation of sulfuric acid concentrations using ambient ion composition and concentration data obtained by ion mass spectrometry measurements (APi-TOF)
<p>The dataset has been used to estimate the sulfuric acid concentration from APi-TOF data. Using the bisulfate ion, the sulfuric acid molecule clustered with the bisulfate ion (dimer) and the trimer, we were able to determine the daytime concentration of sulfuric acid with the concentration of ambient ions, including the condensation sink, ion-ion recombination and collision rate of HSO4- with H2SO4.</p>
Significance of the terrestrial sink in the biogeochemical sulfur cycle
<p>An imbalance in pyrite weathering and burial is regarded as one of the primary mechanisms responsible for the oxygenation of the atmosphere and oceans, but key processes governing the terrestrial sulfur cycle remain nebulous. Here, we investigate components of the terrestrial sulfur cycle in a highly productive, glacier-fed catchment, and use a global mass balance model to put constraints on the riverine sulfur fluxes. Chemistry of stream water and plant debris in the Jostedal watershed, Norway suggests sulfur isotope discrimination is occurring in the porewater. Global models also corroborate additional, previously overlooked pyrite burial with a modest isotope fractionation (<20‰), similar to values reported from freshwater ecosystems. Collectively, our results support the notion that a significant amount of sulfate produced by weathering remains trapped in terrestrial environments. This terrestrial sulfur sink might have waxed and waned over geologic time in response to major biogeochemical events such as terrestrial afforestation.</p>
Bulk geochemistry and in situ sulfur isotopes of hydrothermal deposits from the Lucky Strike vent field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge
<p>This is the dataset presented in the article <em>"Effects of substrate composition and subsurface fluid pathways on the geochemistry of seafloor hydrothermal deposits at the Lucky Strike Vent Field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge". </em>This includes Tables 1 and 2 found in the article as well as Tables S1 and S2 from the Supporting Information. Table 1 is the chemical composition of hydrothermal samples from the Lucky Strike vent field and Table S1 is an extended version of Table 1 that includes elements that were largely below the detection limit. Table 2 is the dataset for in situ sulfur isotope analyses of marcasite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite for samples from Lucky Strike. Table S2 is a compilation of modern seafloor hydrothermal sites that includes Lucky Strike, Menez Gwen, TAG, Snake Pit, Broken Spur, Rainbow, Logatchev, Beebe, Kairei, Yuhuang-1, and Daxi.</p>
Enhanced oxidation of SO2 by H2O2 during haze events: constraints from sulfur isotopes
<p>Sulfate aerosols play a critical role in atmospheric chemistry and climate change. However, the mechanism of sulfate formation during haze events remains highly uncertain. In this work, sulfur isotopic compositions of SO<sub>2</sub> and sulfate in PM<sub>2.5</sub> samples collected in Tianjin, China as well as a Rayleigh distillation model are used to constrain SO<sub>2</sub> oxidation pathways. Here, we show the sulfur isotopic compositions of SO<sub>2</sub> and sulfate as well as concentrations of major ions in PM2.5. Our results show that a large sulfur isotope fractionation between SO<sub>2</sub> and sulfate observed in the first stage of haze events may be attributed to an enhanced oxidation of SO<sub>2</sub> by H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>. This study highlights the important role of SO<sub>2</sub> oxidation by H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> during the haze events. In addition, it is particularly important to note that the sulfur isotopic fractionation factors during haze events dispaly a distinct trend to other periods, indicating that this isotopic approach is useful in understanding the sulfate formation during haze events.</p>

Low molecular weight reduced sulfur substances: a major component of non-volatile dissolved organic sulfur in the Pacific Ocean
<p>The low molecular weight (LMW) reduced sulfur substances (RSS) composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was examined along the GEOTRACES US-GP15 section in the Pacific Ocean. We demonstrate that LMW RSS constitutes a significant fraction of non-volatile dissolved organic sulfur (DOS). While thiols such as glutathione were below our detection limit (300 pM), RSS containing two carbon (C) sulfur (S) bonds were present at concentrations in the hundreds of nM range. RSS accumulation was observed in subtropical waters. The most likely source of these RSS is microbial alteration of sulfurized DOM with production of secondary thioamidated metabolites. RSS are initially produced by cyanobacteria to mitigate copper and oxidative stress induced by UV-B irradiance. A preferential remineralization of RSS over dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the upper 350 meters suggests a partial lability of LMW DOS. Deeper, homogeneous concentrations and C:S ratio indicate increasing stability of this LMW DOS.</p>

This archive contains the raw data and scripts written in R used in the analysis and presentation of the results in this manuscript.</p> <p><strong>Abstract for the manuscript:</strong></p> <p>This work aims to address two major roadblocks in the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries: the inefficient deposition of Li on the metallic Li electrode and the parasitic “polysulfide redox shuttle”. These roadblocks are here approached, respectively, by the combination of a cellulose separator with a cathode-facing conductive porous carbon interlayer, based on their previously reported individual benefits. The cellulose separator increases cycle life by 33%, and the interlayer by a further 25%, in test cells with positive electrodes with practically relevant specifications and a relatively low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio. Despite the prolonged cycle life, the combination of the interlayer and cellulose separator <em>increases</em> the polysulfide shuttle current, leading to reduced Coulombic efficiency. Based on XPS analyses, the latter is ascribed to a change in the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li. Meanwhile, electrolyte decomposition is found to be slower in cells with cellulose-based separators, which explains their longer cycle life. These counterintuitive observations demonstrate the complicated interactions between the cell components in the Li-S system and how strategies aiming to mitigate one unwanted process may exacerbate another.
