Data from: Using three-dimensional geometric morphometric and dental topographic analyses to infer the systematics and paleoecology of fossil treeshrews (Mammalia, Scandentia)

Treeshrews are small, Indomalayan mammals closely related to primates. Previously, three-dimensional geometric morphometric analyses were used to assess patterns of treeshrew lower second molar morphology, which showed that the position of molar landmarks covaries with intraordinal systematics. Another analysis used dental topographic metrics to test patterns of functional dental morphology and found that molar curvature, complexity, and relief were an effective means for examining patterns of variation in treeshrew dietary ecology. Here, we build on these analyses by adding two fossil taxa; Prodendrogale yunnanica, from the Miocene of China and Ptilocercus kylin from the Oligocene of China. Our results show that Pr. yunnanica had a dental bauplan more like that of a tupaiid than that of a ptilocercid, but that the extant tupaiids, including Tupaia and Dendrogale, are more similar to one another in this regard than any are to Prodendrogale. This is contrary to our expectations as Prodendrogale is hypothesized to be most closely related to Dendrogale. Ptilocercus kylin, which has been proposed to be the sister taxon of Pt. lowii, is characterized by dental morphology like that of Pt. lowii in crest and cuspal position but is interpreted to have been more frugivorous. It has been claimed that Ptilocercus has undergone little morphological change through time. Our results suggest that Pt. kylin was more ecologically distinct from Pt. lowii than previously proposed, providing a glimpse into a more complex evolutionary history of that group than had been inferred.

LBA-ECO LC-01 Topographic Data for Intensive Study Areas, Northern Ecuadorian Amazon
This data set contains topographic/geomorphological data associated with the four Intensive Study Areas (ISAs) in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (northern Oriente) that are part of the University of North Carolina's Carolina Population Center (CPC) Ecuador Projects study. Study area boundaries were developed directly from 1:50,000 topographical maps. Point elevation features and 20-meter elevation contours were digitized from these same maps. Digital elevation models (DEMs) were derived from these elevation data and, in turn, terrain aspect and terrain slope were derived from the digital elevation models. Only boundary data were provided for the southwestern ISA. These data are provided in ESRI shapefile format and GeoTiff. There are six compressed (*.zip) data files with this data set.

The Lidar data were obtained by the Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) instrument mounted on a P3 aircraft.
MGN V RDRS 5 GLOBAL DATA RECORD TOPOGRAPHIC V1.0
This data set contains the Magellan Global Topographic Data Record (GTDR). The range to surface is derived by fitting altimeter echoes from the fan-beam altimetry antenna as a function of time to Hagfors' radar backscatter model templates. The ranges are subtracted from the spacecraft radial coordinate (derived from Doppler tracking), yielding measurements of planetary radius. The data are filtered to remove low-frequency errors in the in-plane elements of each spacecraft orbit, and then re-sampled into sinusoidal, Mercator, and north and south polar stereographic projections at a resolution of about 5x5 kilometers per pixel.
Testing Topographic equilibrium between the Ganga and the Narmada River systems, central Indian forebulge (Chi analysis data).

This data contains the .csv files which are generated in order to find the Chi metrics, Normalized steepness index and best fit theta value for the rivers flowing (viz, Chambal, Sindh, Betwa, Ken, Tamas, Son and Narmada river systems) on the central Indian plateau. The data belongs to the paper titled "Testing Topographic equilibrium between the Ganga and the Narmada River systems, central Indian forebulge" that is in review process.

We have used the program "LSDTopoTools" to generate these dataset. The files having prefix "parv_125_" are generated for a DEM of 125m resolution whereas the ones with prefix "3apr_90" are generated for the 90 m resolution DEM. These datasets are used to find out the best fit theta value (Concavity index) for the rivers flowing on the central Indian plateau. These datasets are further converted to simplified figures using Python programming. The file having the name "ind_2k_50_MChiSegmented.csv" is the final dataset which is used to generate maps of the Chi metrics and Normalized steepness values using a GIS software.

(2022; https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ac4d4f) that was adjusted for the Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar by local spot height data from topographic maps (scale 1:50,000) published in 2014 while source data was compiled between 2000 and 2004. The FABDEM V1-0 (Laurence Hawker, Jeffrey Neal (2021): FABDEM V1-0. https://doi.org/10.5523/bris.25wfy0f9ukoge2gs7a5mqpq2j7; CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) was projected to the Myanmar 2000 datum and clipped to the Ayeyarwady Delta region of interest. The vertical reference of the FABDEM V1-0 was transformed to EGM96 before applying a conversion to continuous mean sea level based on mean dynamic topography data (CNES-CLS18 dataset of Mulet et al. (2021; https://doi.org/10.5194/os-17-789-2021) that we transposed to EGM96). Subsequently, inland water bodies were masked using the water body mask of the Copernicus DEM (Airbus Defence and Space, 2020: Copernicus Digital Elevation Model Product Handbook Version 3.0, Airbus, 38 pp.) and cell values with an elevation of more than 7 m below mean sea level were removed.

From the topographic maps, the local spot heights outside of areas masked in the AD-DEM (Seeger et al. (2023): Local digital elevation model for the Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar (AD-DEM) derived from digitised spot and contour heights of topographic maps. Doi; CC-BY 4.0) were subtracted from elevation values of the FABDEM V1-0 at the same locations (~3630 spot heights). Empirical Bayesian Kriging with empirical data transformation and exponential modelling was applied to interpolate the height residuals and export the raster data at ~30 m grid cell resolution. The mask layer of the AD-DEM was applied to the height residual raster in order to correct for interpolations in areas of data paucity. Subsequently, the interpolated height residuals were subtracted from the pre-processed FABDEM. In delta areas outside the masked regions of the height residual raster, the elevation of the pre-processed FABDEM was maintained (see the figure in the uploaded dataset).

For further information on processing of local and global elevation data for the Ayeyarwady Delta in Myanmar, including DEM interpolation, determination of local mean sea level and vertical datum conversions, as well as DEM performance, see the corresponding paper and supplementary material.

File name: FABDEM_EGM96_MDT_AD_MMR2000_maskedCop_min7_adjusted_AD.tif

File format: GEOTIFF file

Spatial reference: MMR2000_46N

Vertical reference: local continuous mean sea level, i.e., mean dynamic topography (CNES-CLS18 dataset of Mulet et al.
