Parallel text typology dataset

<p>This repository contains data accompanying the paper <em>Neural models can sometimes discover typological generalizations</em>, currently being submitted for publication. It contains the following information for 1295 different languages:</p> <ul> <li>language vector representations from a range of neural models</li> <li>automatically derived lists of affixes</li> <li>automatically derived lists of inflectional paradigms</li> <li>typological features derived from annotation projection, and statistics on dependency relations</li> <li>typological features derived from classifiers trained on language vectors and typological databases</li> <li>automatically derived word lists</li> <li>data needed for automatic evaluation of language representations (code in separate repository)</li> </ul> <p>Note that the multilingual word embeddings described in the paper are very large, and therefore distributed in a separate public repository.</p>

Kiel South Asian Typological Database

<p>Legend for interpreting the data of the</p> <p><strong>Kiel South Asian Typological Database</strong></p> <p>This corpus was originally compiled under the direction of John Peterson by Jessica Katiuscia Ivani, with contributions by Netra Prasad Paudyal, Nikita K&ouml;nig, Lennart Chevallier, Anika Besser, Nellia Bleyer, Sarah Anders and Josephine Hennig in the project &ldquo;Towards a linguistic prehistory of eastern central South Asia (and beyond)&rdquo;, financed by the German Research Council (DFG, Project Grant 326697274), which we gratefully acknowledge.</p> <p>The database has since been considerably expanded&mdash;22 features pertaining to negation strategies and 6 new languages have been added, especially of the Indo-Iranian stock. These Indo-Iranian languages could be included thanks to a generous grant from the Subcluster &ldquo;ROOTS of Inequalities: Social, Economic, and Environmental Developments&rdquo; in the Cluster of Excellence &ldquo;ROOTS &ndash; Social, Environmental, and Cultural Connectivity in Past Societies&rdquo;, also funded by the DFG, which we also gratefully acknowledge here.</p> <p>The data have been re-checked and corrected, where necessary, by John Peterson, Lennart Chevallier, Shane Arzbach, Sebastian Dudek, Martina Riege, Swantje Fuhrken, and Luna Hemmerling.</p> <p>This database includes information on up to 230 features (described below) for 42 languages from the Indo-Aryan, Indo-Iranian, Munda and Dravidian stocks, as well as the isolates Kusunda and Nihali. Of these 230 features, 98 derive from the <a href="https://glottobank.org/#grambank">Grambank</a> database of the <a href="https://glottobank.org/">Glottobank</a> research consortium and were compiled by the members of our project in cooperation with that project. As the labeling of features in that database may have changed somewhat since that time, the labels found here may no longer correlate one-to-one with those features. We hope to synchronize these labels in the near future, but until then users of these features will have to check these on their own.</p> <p>The feature labels &ldquo;NGB&rdquo;, &ldquo;JPP&rdquo; and &ldquo;SA&rdquo; refer only to different stages during the compilation of the data in our own project and are not relevant to the analysis of the data themselves.</p> <p>The primary areas of grammar covered by the relevant features (e.g., ergativity, classifiers, negation, number, etc.) have been indicated on the right-hand side of the features list for many of these features. Abundance trends for river macroinvertebrates vary across taxa, trophic group and river typology

<p>There is mounting evidence that terrestrial arthropods are declining rapidly in many areas of the world. It is unclear whether freshwater invertebrates, which are key providers of ecosystem services, are also declining. We addressed this question by analysing a long-term dataset of macroinvertebrate abundance collected from 2002 to 2019 across 5,009 sampling sites in English rivers. Patterns varied markedly across taxonomic groups. Within trophic groups, we detected increases in the abundance of carnivores by 19% and herbivores by 14.8%, whilst we estimated decomposers have declined by 21.7% in abundance since 2002. We also found heterogeneity in trends across rivers belonging to different typologies based on geological dominance and catchment altitude, with organic lowland rivers having generally higher rates of increase in abundance across taxa and trophic groups, with siliceous lowland rivers having the most declines. Our results reveal a complex picture of change in freshwater macroinvertebrate abundance between taxonomic groups, trophic levels and river typologies. Our analysis helps with identifying priority regions for action on potential environmental stressors where we discover macroinvertebrate abundance declines.</p>

Towards a prosodic typology of Kherwarian Munda languages: Santali of Assam

<p>No Kherwarian lects have been studied experimentally using instrumental phonetic techniques. Here we begin this process looking at underived disyllabic lexical items in Assam Santali. Forms were recorded in isolation, in a quasi-focal frame &quot;I ____ said&quot;, and in an out of focus frame &quot;I ____ LOUDLY said, not SOFTLY&quot; to control for focal intonation effects and those of phrasal or utterance intonation. Instrumental analysis suggests that Assam Santali always show prominence on the second syllable of disyllables, cued by intensity, f0 and duration.</p>
