Palmyra Atoll dissolved organic carbon sampling locations and values

This package provides data for Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) sampling locations and values. DOC was sampled at 12 sites to compare DOC export in native and non-native canopies Palmyra Atoll in 2019. Two samples were taken 50 m apart at each site. Three comparison samples were taken from surface waters offshore of the atoll, on the forereef, and from lagoon away from shore. Samples were processed and sent to a lab for analysis.

Arts and humanities in the LTER Network: understanding extent, values, and challenges by assessing the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network, 2013-2014

The Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is a collection of 25 National Science Foundation-funded sites committed to long-term, place-based investigation of the natural world. While activities primarily focus on ecological research, arts and humanities inquiry emerged in 2002 and since then a substantial body of creative work has been produced at LTER-affiliated sites. These art-humanities-science collaborations parallel a wider trend in universities and nonprofits. However, there is little empirical work on the value and effectiveness of this work. After launching a survey in 2013 to assess the values and challenges associated with arts and humanities in the LTER Network, which identified empathy as a meaningful potential outcome of this creative work, we conducted a follow-up analysis to understand: the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network; the role of empathy in bridging arts, humanities, and science collaborations; and the capacity of empathy to connect wider audiences both to LTER science and to the natural world. Our research included phone interviews with representatives from 15 LTER sites and an audience perception survey at an LTER-hosted art show. We found that arts-humanities-science collaborations have great potential to catalyze relationships between scholars, the public, and the natural world; cultivate inspiration and empathy for the natural world; and spark awareness shifts that can enable pro-environmental behavior. Our research demonstrates the potential for art-humanities-science collaborations to facilitate conservation attitudes and action in the Network and beyond.

Large shark catches (Drumline), water temperatures, salinities, dissolved oxygen levels, and stable isotope values in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER) from May 2009 to May 2011

This dataset provides information on the catches of large sharks in the Shark River Slough in relation to physical factors including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, salinity, and distance upstream. Analysis of data collected suggest that distance from the Gulf of Mexico and salinity have the largest effects on shark catch rates, with most large sharks being caught at the mouth of the estuary in high salinity waters. This dataset includes all sharks caught on drumline gear, including large coastal species such as bull sharks and lemon sharks, as well as smaller coastal species such as Atlantic sharpnose sharks and blacknose sharks.

WPE01 Assessing the value added of NEON for using machine learning to quantify vegetation mosaics and woody plant encroachment at Konza Prairie

Woody encroachment, or invasion of woody plants, is rapidly shifting tallgrass prairie into shrub and evergreen dominated ecosystems, mainly due to exclusion of fire. Tracking the pace and extent of woody encroachment is difficult because shrubs and small trees are much smaller than the coarse resolution (>10m2) of common remote sensed images. However, the US government has been investing in finer resolution (<2m2) remote sensing through USDA NAIP and the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), both of which cost multi-million dollars each year and contain different remote sensed products. We compared two methods of classification (random forests and support vector machines) with these two freely available remotely sensed aerial images to determine if and how much NEON adds to classification accuracy and determine which method of machine learning was more accurate. All models have very high overall classification accuracy (>91%), with the NEON image a few percent more accurate than NAIP. The NEON image significantly relies on canopy height (LiDAR) to make classifications, but the importance of bands is more evenly distributed during NAIP classification. Lastly, accuracy for Eastern Red Cedar specifically is high with NEON (78-84%), compared to the relatively low classification accuracy using NAIP imagery (55-61%).

PWV02 Importance values of gallery forest vegetation at Konza Prairie, 1983

Eighteen gallery forest stands, representing nearly all of the nondisturbed forests on Konza Prairie, were sampled during the 1983 growing season. The point-quarter method at 20 sample points was used to sample overstory vegetation. Species names and diameter were recorded for the four sampled trees in each plot. From these data frequency, density and dominance were calculated to derive importance values for each species in a stand.

Mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) caloric value analysis from various collections along Rowley River tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley, MA.

At PIE, mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) use the spring-cycle high tides to access the flooded high marsh platform and eat invertebrate prey, coupling the high marsh and aquatic creek food webs by gathering energy produced on the high marsh and making it available to the aquatic food web. Changes in the geomorphology of saltmarsh creek edges greatly influence the survival, biomass, and resource use of mummichog populations. Here, we use bomb calorimetry to assess individual mummichog caloric content per gram of biomass at 4 PIE creeks known to present different geomorphologic patterns in their low marsh zones. These data can be used for the assessment of the impact of low marsh geomorphology on mummichog caloric content and energy production in PIE food webs. These data were included as part of two studies “Habitat decoupling via saltmarsh creek geomorphology alters connection between spatially-coupled food webs” (Lesser et al. 2020) and “Cross-habitat access modifies the ‘trophic relay’ in New England saltmarsh ecosystems” (Lesser et al. 2021).

To assess differences in trophic relationships and enerygy transfer related to long term fertilization of tidal creeks (TIDE Project: https://thetideproject.org/), organisms including primary producers, invertebrates, and fish were sampled and analyzed for stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ14N) , carbon (δ13C), and sulfur (δ34S). Collections were made during summers from 2000-2018 from reference and nutrient-enriched branches of 4 tidal creeks.

Data used to create figures in the ACP Letters manuscipt "The value of remote marine aerosol measurements for constraining radiative forcing uncertainty" by Regayre et al. (2020)

<p>This dataset was created from perturbed parameter ensembles (PPEs) using the HadGEM-UKCA atmospheric composition climate model. All data needed to reproduce figures in the Regayre et al. (2020) ACP Letters article &quot;The value of remote marine aerosol measurements for constraining radiative forcing uncertainty&quot; are included. Other output from the PPEs can be obtained by contacting the lead author.</p> <p>The following data are included here:</p> <ul> <li>CCN measurement data degraded to match the model-measurement comparison resolution.</li> <li>Unconstrained and constrained CCN<sub>0.2</sub> output from the PPE used to make Figure 1. These compressed files contain 48 .dat files. Each .dat file contains the PPE mean, variance and 95% creidble interval data. Files are named consecutively, containing data from 90<sup>o</sup>S to 90<sup>o</sup>N at 0<sup>o</sup>E, then continuing Eastward. When combined, these files provide data for each latitude/longitude pair at the N48 spatial resolution.</li> <li>A zip file of an netcdf file containing 26-dimensional data for parameter values, used to create the sample of 1 million model variants from our statistical emulators of model output.</li> <li>A zip file containing a folder of files made of one million ones and zeros that indicate the retention/rejection criteria from applying our constraint methodology for various constraint combination scenarios, for each model variant. A value of 1 indicates the model variant was retained. Data in these files is in the same order as the unconstrained sample file of parameter values.</li> <li>Compressed files containing global, annual mean RF<sub>aci</sub> and ERF<sub>aci</sub> values for the unconstrained set of one million model variants. RCSED - A Value-Added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of 800,299 Galaxies in 11 Ultraviolet, Optical, and Near-Infrared Bands: Morphologies, Colors, Ionized Gas and Stellar Populations Properties

<p>We present RCSED, the value-added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies, which contains homogenized spectrophotometric data for 800,299 low&nbsp;and intermediate redshift galaxies (0.007 &lt; z &lt; 0.6) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample. Accessible from the Virtual Observatory (VO) and complemented with detailed information on galaxy properties obtained with the state-of-the-art data analysis, RCSED enables direct studies of galaxy formation and evolution during the last 5 Gyr. We provide tabulated color transformations for galaxies of different morphologies and luminosities and analytic expressions for the red sequence shape in different colors. RCSED comprises integrated k-corrected photometry in up-to 11 ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared bands published by the GALEX, SDSS, and UKIDSS wide-field imaging surveys; results of the stellar population fitting of SDSS spectra including best-fitting templates, velocity dispersions, parameterized star formation histories, and stellar metallicities computed for instantaneous starburst and exponentially declining star formation models; parametric and non-parametric emission line fluxes and profiles; and gas phase metallicities. We link RCSED to the Galaxy Zoo morphological classification and galaxy bulge+disk decomposition results by Simard et al. We construct the color-magnitude, Faber-Jackson, mass-metallicity relations, compare them with the literature and discuss systematic errors of galaxy properties presented in our catalog. RCSED is accessible from the project web-site and via VO simple spectrum access and table access services using VO compliant applications. We describe several SQL query examples against the database. Finally, we briefly discuss existing and future scientific applications of RCSED and prospectives for the catalog extension to higher redshifts and different wavelengths.</p>

NDSI values in a region affected by a forest fire

<p>This dataset includes maps with NDSI values that come from Landsat 5 Surface Reflectance collection images available in Google Eath Engine. TIFF images cropped to a region of Lanjaron where different post-fire treatments were established are presented. This area was affected by a forest fire in September 2005. That is why NDSI values and binary layers are presented for two periods, before and after the fire (hese binary layers are generated based on a threshold of 0.35). Comparisons are made in three forest management treatments after the fire. These treatments were No Intervention (NI), Partial Court (PCL) and Salvage Logging (SL).</p><p>This dataset also includes a grid with the sizes of the Landsat pixels that includes as information the treatment to which it belongs (column Trat_1).</p><p>And a folder of outputs where each cell has an associated value of ancillary variables (such as elevation, slope, shadows) and another where they present the NDSI values extracted from the images of the dataset</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is the dataset "The values of using disruption technologies" of the e-DIPLOMA project and includes the following documents:</p> <ul> <li>Values.xlsx</li> <li>Scenarios.ppt</li> <li>ReadmeFile.rtf</li> </ul> <p>The data were collected in the values-workshop. They describe how the practice based example learning scenarios with disruptive technologies are perceived regarding values. The data were collected in workshops held in several European countries. The participants could read about the learning design scenarios with disruptive technologies and then discuss the values they perceived regarding these learning situations.In the workshops the instrument with 45 values names and descriptions was provided to elicit values. The values could be associated with four different learning scenarios with disruptive technologies. The group interview was held at the workshop at 2,5 h, the groups jointly discussed the values. The participants of the group workshop were heterogeneous: students, educators, technical support personnel at institutes, educational technology developers. There were 4 groups with 4-5 persons in each workshop. The values were collected using the anonymous online survey approach. The workshops were conducted in the national languages and data were translated into English.</p>

Plant diversity and indicator values within 200m radius of the Landklif plots

<p><span>Species numbers of vascular plants as assessed in vegetation surveys inside and within 200m radius of the Landklif plots. Vegetation inside the plots was sampled between mid-May and end of July 2019 (seven subplots, 10m2 sampling area per plot). Cover values for each species were estimated following the Braun-Blanquet scale. Species pools within 200m radius around the plot were assessed between mid-May and begin of August 2020 by standardized transect walks (walking time proportional to area percentages of dominant habitat types within 200m radius, 60 minutes total walking time in each circle). The dataset contains average species numbers of the subplots, total species numbers of the plots, and total species numbers within 200m radius of the plots, as well as mean Ellenberg indicator values on plot and 200m scale.</span></p> <p><span>LandKlif is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts within the Bavarian Climate Research Network (bayklif). &nbsp;Within the five year funding period of bayklif, five interdisciplinary senior research associations and five junior research groups are be financed with a total sum of 18 million Euro. LandKliF, as one of the five interdisciplinary senior research associations, addresses the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services in semi-natural, agricultural and urban landscapes.</span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
