Volume of Interest: Exploring New Data Types in Urban Functional Zones

<p>随着全球城镇化的发展,实现城市功能区的精细化识别已成为一项挑战。基于POI数据的传统方法不足以识别不同区域的功能特征。以往研究中基本单位设置不精确、POI重分类标准模糊、功能区定义模糊等局限性,成为获得准确识别结果的重大障碍。为了解决这些问题,本研究提出了一种将POI数据扩展到三维空间并生成VOI(感兴趣体积)数据的方法。以香港一个小区域为例,采用一系列指标量化功能特征,然后将识别结果与基于POI的方法进行比较。最终鉴定总体准确率和kappa系数分别达到85.67%和0.7619,表明基于VOI的方法与实际情况基本吻合。分析表明,VOI数据包含更丰富、更全面的城市空间信息,能够更好地反映城市内不同区域之间的联系和影响。本研究可为城市功能区深入研究提供参考案例。</p>

Data from: Vomeronasal organ volume increases with body size and is dissociated with loss of a visual signal in Sceloporus lizards

<p>Many organisms communicate using signals in different sensory modalities (multicomponent or multimodal). When one signal or component is lost over evolutionary time, it may be indicative of changes in other characteristics of the signaling system, including the sensory organs used to perceive and process signals. <em>Sceloporus</em> lizards predominantly use chemical and visual signals to communicate, yet some species have lost the ancestral ventral color patch used in male-male agonistic interactions and exhibit increased chemosensory behavior. Here, we asked whether evolutionary loss of this sexual signal is associated with larger vomeronasal organ (VNO) volumes (an organ that detects chemical scents) compared to species that have retained the color patch. We measured VNO coronal section areas of 7–8 adult males from each of 11 <em>Sceloporus</em> species (4 that lost and 7 that retained the color patch), estimated sensory and total epithelium volume, and compared volumes using phylogenetic ANCOVA, controlling for body size. Contrary to expectations, we found that species retaining the ventral patch had similar relative VNO volumes as did species that have lost the ancestral patch, and that body size explains VNO epithelium volume. Visual signal loss may be sufficiently compensated for by increased chemosensory behavior, and the allometric pattern may indicate sensory system trade-offs for large-bodied species.</p>

Data from: Macroevolution of desiccation-related morphology in plethodontid salamanders as inferred from a novel surface area to volume ratio estimation approach

Evolutionary biologists have long been interested in the macroevolutionary consequences of various selection pressures, yet physiological responses to selection across deep time are not well understood. In this paper, we investigate how a physiologically-relevant morphological trait, surface area to volume ratio (SA:V) of lungless salamanders, has evolved across broad regional and climatic variation. SA:V directly impacts an organisms' ability to retain water, leading to the expectation that smaller SA:Vs would be advantageous in arid, water-limited environments. To explore the macroevolutionary patterns of SA:V, we first develop an accurate method for estimating SA:V from linear measurements. Next, we investigate the macroevolutionary patterns of SA:V across 257 salamander species, revealing that higher SA:Vs phylogenetically correlate with warmer, wetter climates. We also observe higher SA:V disparity and rate of evolution in tropical species, mirrored by higher climatic disparity in available and occupied tropical habitats. Taken together, these results suggest that the tropics have provided a wider range of warmer, wetter climates for salamanders to exploit, thereby relaxing desiccation pressures on SA:V. Overall, this paper provides an accurate, efficient method for quantifying salamander SA:V, allowing us to demonstrate the power of physiological selection pressures in influencing the macroevolution of morphology.

STL files and data to support: Improvements in methods for measuring the volume conductivity of electrically conductive carbon powders

<p>Electrically conductive carbon powders are commonly used as filler materials in polymers to create electrically semi-conductive composite materials for use in battery electrodes and anti-static applications. Current methods for characterizing the conductivity of these powders use two pistons to compress the powders. Two-piston methods are known to underestimate conductivity. This study develops a guard-electrode method based on ASTM D257 to better characterize the bulk conductivity and impedance spectra of electrically conductive powders. The conductivity and impedance spectra of a highly conductive powder (copper powder) and a low conductivity powder (cellulose) were used to bound the conductivity of carbon black, graphite, and biochar. Powders were measured through a full range of compression with both the two-piston and the guard-electrode method. In all cases, measurements using the guard-electrode method have higher conductivity and lower impedance than the same powders measured using the two-piston method. The grain conductivity of the particles is obtained through fitting the relationship of conductivity versus packing fraction using the GEM equation. The guard-electrode method is shown to be more similar to established conductivity values as measured via a four-probe technique for copper and graphite then the two-piston method.</p>

Data from: Small volume plasma exchange for Guillain-Barré syndrome in resource-limited settings: a phase II safety and feasibility study

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and feasibility of small volume plasma exchange (SVPE) as an alternative to standard plasma exchange (PE) or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) patients. DESIGN: Non-randomized, single arm, interventional trial. SETTING: National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty adult (&gt;18 years) patients with GBS presented within 2 weeks of onset of weakness who were unable to walk unaided for more than 10 meters. INTERVENTIONS: SVPE involves blood cell sedimentation in a blood bag and removal of supernatant plasma after blood cells are re-transfused. This procedure was repeated three to six times a day, for eight consecutive days. OUTCOME MEASURES: Serious adverse events (SAE) were defined as severe sepsis and deep venous thrombosis related to the central vein catheter (CVC) used during SVPE. SVPE was considered safe if less than 5/20 patients experienced a SAE, and feasible if 8 L plasma could be removed within 8 days in at least 15/20 patients. RESULTS Median patient age 33 years (IQR 23-46; range 18-55); 13 (65%) were male. Median MRC sum score was 20 (IQR 0-29; range 0-36); three (15%) patients required mechanical ventilation. One patient developed SAE (severe sepsis, possibly related to CVC). Minor adverse effects were transient hypotension in 10 (50%) patients; CVC-associated bleeding in 10 (50%); transfusion reaction to fresh frozen plasma in 4 (20%); and hypo-albuminemia, anaemia or electrolyte imbalance in 4 (20%). Removal of 8 L plasma was possible in 15 (75%) patients. GBS disability score improved by at least one grade in 14 (70%) patients four weeks after SVPE started. No patients died. CONCLUSION: SVPE seems a safe and feasible alternative treatment to standard PE or IVIg for GBS; further studies of clinical efficacy in low-resource developing countries are warranted. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Clinicaltrials.gov NCT02780570 on May 23, 2016. Strength and limitations of the study: 1. The strength of this study underlies the novel and simple technique of SVPE, which is much less expensive than conventional immunotherapies (plasma exchange and intravenous immunoglobulin). 2. SVPE is corroborated as safe and feasible for the first time in a prospective and standardized cohort of patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). 3. The intrinsic limitations of this study are its non-randomized, single arm nature, which is conducted in a single center with a limited sample size of GBS patients. 4. Clinical efficacy of SVPE on patients with GBS was a secondary end-point assessment and therefore deserves a randomized controlled trial in future to assess the clinical efficacy of SVPE for the patients with GBS.
