Aquatic islands in the sky: 100 years of research on water-filled tree holes
<p>Water-filled tree holes are unique ecosystems that may occur high up in tree crowns like aquatic islands in the sky. Insect larvae, mesofauna and other organisms colonize the waterbodies and feed on the accumulating detritus. Water-filled tree holes are not only important habitats for these species but have been used as model systems in ecology. Here we review more than 100 years of research on tree-hole inhabiting organisms and show that most studies focus on selected or even single species (most of which are mosquitoes) whereas only few studies examine groups other than insects, especially in the tropics. Using a vote counting of results and a meta-analysis of community studies, we show that the effects of tree-hole size and resources on abundance and richness were investigated most frequently. Both were found to have a positive effect, but effect sizes were modulated by site-specific environmental variables such as temperature or precipitation. We also show that parameters such as the height of the tree holes above ground, tree-hole density, predation and detritus type can be important drivers of organism abundance or richness but are less often tested. We identify several important research gaps and potential avenues for future research. Specifically, future studies should investigate the structure, functions and temporal dynamics of tree-hole food webs and their cross-system interactions, for example with terrestrial predators that act as a connection to their terrestrial surroundings in meta-ecosystems. Global observational or experimental tree-hole studies could contribute pivotal information on spatial variation of community structure and environmental drivers of community assembly. With a better understanding of these unique aquatic habitats in terrestrial ecosystems, natural and artificial tree holes can not only serve as model systems for addressing fundamental ecological questions but also as indicator systems of the impacts of environmental change on ecosystems.</p>

WATER: AN ONLINE TOOLKIT TO SUPPORT THE RESEARCH FOR STANDARDS
<p>Within <a href="https://www.eu-project-o.eu/">Project Ô</a>, the European Commission-funded Horizon 2020 project, <a href="https://www.uni.com/">UNI</a> - Italian Standardization Body has realized a <strong>first version of an online <a href="https://www.eu-project-o.eu/standardization-toolkit/">Standardization Toolkit</a></strong><a href="https://www.eu-project-o.eu/standardization-toolkit/"> </a>to support the research over a dataset of more than 100 standardization documents in the field of water and its management.</p> <p>The Standardization Toolkit, finalized in May 2021, is based on the vision of Project Ô.</p> <p>Specifically, the toolkit consists of an online tool, which let you select standards choosing among several filters. For example, it is possible to select standards starting from technical committees at national (UNI), European (CEN) and international (ISO) level. In addition, it is possible to make a deeper search by selecting standards according to specific areas and/or keywords.</p> <p>The list of standards will be the result of what emerges by searching in a panel of more than 100 different standardization documents identified within the activity of mapping that was carried out for Project Ô. The standards are related to the theme of water, its reuse also in a circular economy perspective, and to the environmental management.</p> <p>Standardization is a key tool for technology transfer, bridging the gap between research and the international market.</p> <p>Standards codify innovation through a shared language understood by companies, researchers, stakeholders and citizens worldwide, based on the principles of openness and transparency. The co-creation process of standardization supports open innovation and cross-sectoral innovation.</p> <p>Standards ensure comparability, compatibility and interoperability, building trust with customers and suppliers, promoting sustainability in terms of processes, products and business.</p> <p>On Zenodo it has been uploaded the dataset behind this toolkit. </p> <p> </p>
Data sources for the manuscript on groundwater stress indicators published in Water Resources Research
<p>We computed seven global-scale groundwater stress indicators at the 0.5° grid-cell level and for transboundary aquifers> 20,000 km². All indicators were calculated for current conditions (1981-2010 or 2001-2010) based on a homogenized version of the concatenated WATCH Forcing Data ERA-40 (WFD) and WFD ERA-Interim data sets (WFDEI). In addition, four of the indicators were computed for the 2050s (2041-2070) under the worst-case greenhouse gas emissions scenario RCP8.5 applying ten climate and irrigation scenarios. The scenarios were derived by combining two irrigation scenarios (“AAI constant” and “AAI LandSHIFT”) with model output from the five global climate models GFDL-ESM2M, HadGEM2 -ES, IPSL-CM5A-LR, MIROC-ESM-CHEM, and NorESM1-M.</p> <p>Here, we provide the WaterGAP model output used to compute the groundwater stress indicators. A description of the indicators and the underlying data can be found in the reference below. Moreover, a table with coordinates and grid-cell area [km²] used in WaterGAP is provided for the conversion of units.</p> <p>The model output comprises:</p> <p>1. Monthly groundwater recharge (GWR and GWRswb) 1981-2010 and 2041-2070 [mm/month, km³/month]</p> <p>2. It includes data from a scoping literature review, based on searches performed with the Web of Science (WoS) search engine across all available databases. The search was performed on April 22nd 2022, encompassing the fields of title, abstract, authors’ keywords and WoS generated keywords.
