Hourly water chemistry measurements at the mouth of West Falmouth Harbor, MA, USA from 2005 to 2019 and 2023
West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have been measuring water chemistry at the mouth of the harbor to calculate exchange between the harbor and adjacent coastal waters of Buzzards Bay. Water samples were taken hourly over 24- to 48-hour periods during several periods in 2005-2009, 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2023. Data from 2005-2009 were collected year-round; samples from 2014 and later were collected during June through August. Samples were processed for ammonium, phosphate, nitrate + nitrite, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus unless otherwise notated. During some sampling years, additional samples were run for silicate, chlorophyll, total dissolved nitrogen, total dissolved phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, and particulate organic nitrogen. Salinity is reported for all samples. Samples were collected with an ISCO autosampler and stored on ice until analysis. Seagrass morphometry and chlorophyll content at nine stations along a eutrophication gradient in West Falmouth Harbor, 2019
West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, in 2019 we sampled seagrass (Zostera marina) to assess the relationship between sediment biogeochemistry and seagrass ecosystem parameters. This dataset contains information on aboveground and belowground biomass ratios, seagrass density, epiphyte biomass, and chlorophyll content from sites across the eelgrass bed in West Falmouth Harbor that receive varying inputs of nitrogen. The data supports findings reported in Haviland et al., 2022 (https://doi.org/10.1002/lno.12025).
West Falmouth Harbor Eelgrass Bed Extent, 2010-2019, generalized
West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000’s. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have been assessing changes in the extent and health of the eelgrass (Zostera marina) community within the harbor. We conducted side scan sonar surveys and analyzed them using SonarWiz and ArcGIS to delineate the extent of continuous seagrass bed within the harbor. The goal of this dataset is to assess changes in eelgrass habitat extent; small bare patches within the larger seagrass bed due to anchor scars and mooring scouring were not digitized. Groundtruthing of the edges was done with a combination of diver surveys, underwater video, and surface surveys at low tide. Surveys were run in every year from 2010 through 2022 and we plan to continue them into future years. Data analysis is ongoing and shapefiles will be added as they are run through quality assessment. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Snail and slug abundance were measured for a 10 year period between 1997 - 2006 at three elevations on Watershed 1 as well as in a reference area west of Watershed 6. Watershed 1 received calcium additions as wollastonite (CaSiO3) during the study period. This data set includes counts of snails and and slugs for the entire study period. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Measurements of water column depth at 5 minute intervals in West Falmouth Harbor, West Falmouth, MA, 2016-2025
Water level measurements at 5 minute intervals at the West Falmouth Harbor town dock (West Falmouth, MA, USA), collected during the summer sampling season only. Dates vary by year. Pressures were collected from a pair of Onset HOBO U20L sensors, one submerged in a stilling well and one above the water surface, and depths were calculated in Onset's Hoboware Pro using the Barometric Compenation Assistant. Depths were collected relative to the location of the pressure transducer.

Overview ============ The CAP LTER maintains a 23-m urban eddy flux tower in the west Phoenix, AZ neighborhood of Maryvale (-112.1426 W, +33.4838 N). The tower is instrumented for long-term measurement of the covariance of turbulent eddy and radiative fluxes for the purposes of urban micrometeorological research. Additional micrometerological parameters, such as precipitation, are also measured. Select soil parameters were measured from 2012 through 2016. Eddy covariance data are collected and stored at two temporal resolutions: 10 Hz and 30-minute averages. Data presented here include only 30-minute averages. Owing to large volumes, 10-Hz data are avialable by request to the CAP LTER Information Manager (caplter.data@asu.edu).

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Leaf Area Index (LAI) Bear Brook Watershed (West of Watershed 6)
Leaf area index (LAI) of the mature deciduous forest in the Bear Brook watershed (west of WS6) at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest is estimated on the basis of leaf litterfall collections; the raw data for litterfall are posted in the EDI data package – Fine Litterfall Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1992 – present (https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=49). Leaf litterfall collected in 0.097 m2 litter traps is sorted by species. The number of leaves of each species is counted. The counts are multiplied by the average area per leaf for each species in each plot to estimate LAI. Litter traps are located randomly within each of four plots that are arranged along the elevation gradient within the deciduous forest zone. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
Meteorology and soil moisture data collected at multiple frequencies from the T-WEST NPP site automated monitoring stations: Jornada Basin LTER, 2013 - ongoing
This dataset contains summary data collected at the Jornada Basin LTER program's T-WEST NPP site weather station and associated soil substation at several temporal scales. Precipitation data are collected at 1-second frequency during rain events, air temperature and wind at 5-minute frequency, and all sensors are measured at 30-minute, hourly and daily frequencies. Observed values include average/maximum/minimum air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed; average wind direction; total precipitation; soil moisture, temperature and conductivity. These are measured and calculated based on 1-second scan rate of all sensors located at an automated weather station, and a nearby soil substation, installed at the site. Wind speed is measured at 75 cm, 150 cm, and 300 cm, wind direction at approximately 3m, and air temperature and relative humidity at approximately 2.5m. Soil sensors are installed at approximately 10, 20 and 30cm depths.
Thermistor chain measurements from West Lake Bonney, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2014-2019)
To capture year-round temperature variability in West Lake Bonney (WLB), Taylor Valley, Antarctica, we deployed two self-logging RBR Concerto T10 thermistor strings as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project. The thermistor strings were deployed beneath the permanent ice cover from December 2014 to November 2015 at two locations on the western side of the lake. In November 2015, both strings were relocated toward the centre of the glacier terminus to better capture potential subglacial inflows. Each thermistor string contained 10 sensors spaced at 1.44 m intervals. This data package includes 1-minute interval temperature measurements from all four deployment sites, along with daily averages compiled in a single file. Data from three thermistors were flagged as questionable based on comparisons with long-term MCM LTER CTD casts; these values remain in the dataset but are flagged to allow for adjustment during data processing.
High-frequency, hourly, and daily measurements from the West Lake Bonney "Blue Box" (WLBBB), McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1996-2024, ongoing)
As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program, continuous measurements have been collected from a network of automated lake monitoring platforms in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. These lake-based stations, commonly referred to as “blue boxes” due to their historically blue instrument enclosures, provide high-frequency observations of key limnological variables essential for understanding physical drivers of aquatic ecosystem dynamics in the perennially ice-covered, meromictic lakes of this polar desert environment. This data package includes measurements from the West Lake Bonney “blue box” lake monitoring platform (WLBBB), established during the 1996-1997 austral summer in West Lake Bonney, Taylor Valley. Parameters include air and water temperature, surface and underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), continuous stage (lake level), ice surface ablation, and, beginning in the 2022-2023 austral summer, dissolved oxygen (DO), reported as percent saturation due to the unavailability of continuous salinity measurements required for computing concentration. Data are provided at high frequency (typically 15-minute intervals), along with hourly and daily summaries. Users should note that summary statistics may be affected by periods of missing data. As there is no universally accepted standard for handling gaps in time-series data, users are encouraged to use the high-frequency data and establish their own criteria for acceptable data completeness to minimize potential bias.
