Deadeye & chains from the wreck of HMS Colossus
**Deadeye and chains** Several objects have been recently exposed on the seabed close to the Colossus dive trail. One of these is a timber lower deadeye complete with iron chains (C10.1). The chains are the iron straps used to fasten the lower deadeye to the outside of the hull of the ship. This deadeye is very similar to another (F1355) found in 2015 some 7m to the east .The diameter of the deadeye (440mm) is such that this would have been one of the main or foremast deadeyes – the mizzen deadeyes were smaller. It was partly buried within the seabed and lies on its edge rather than flat on the seabed. Although it lies right next to the dive trail around the site, this deadeye remained unrecognised until recently. VOC Batavia wreck site, Abrolhos Islands 2019
Wreck site of the VOC Batavia wrecked in 1629 on Morning Reef at the Abrolhos Islands off Geraldton, Western Australia. Revised model captured February 2019 by Dave Jackson Carrying 322 crew and passengers, the 650 ton Batavia is one of the most infamous and historically significant wrecks on the Australian coastline. The Batavia wrecked in 1629 on Morning Reef in the Wallabi group of the Abrolhos Islands off Geraldton. It is the second oldest known shipwreck in Australian history and has a gruesome story of survival, mutiny and massacre among the survivours of the wreck. With women forced as concubines while the weak, unwilling and sick were murdered by a group of blood thirsty of mutineers, of the 268 castaways marooned on the surrounding islands, less than 150 remained alive by the time a rescue ship was sighted on the horizon. Wreck Jeminna windlass, Finland 30.10.2020
The wreck's nick name "Jeminna" comes from the researchers (Jesse and Minna) locating it in 2018. The official name is "The wreck SE from Slätlandet". It lies in 24m depth in the "Jussarö wreck trap" area in Baltic sea South from Jussarö island in Tammisaari Archipelago in Finland. The ship is from 1700's. It has had at least two masts and it has two anchors on top of each other. There is a 7m long pegged log type windlass to raise the anchor. So, the ship has been at least some 8m wide. There is at least one long yard for square rigged sails remaining. Wooden wrecks in northern Baltic Sea are in relatively good shape, because there is no shipworm nor tide.
