Twin test 1: Effect of vegetation on urban flows. PIV data from NTUA WT experiment and LDV from KIT WT experiment

<p>The first Twin Test (TW1) of the TWEET-IE project (<a href="http://www.tweet-ie.eu">www.tweet-ie.eu</a>) involved measurements of the flow past a surface mounted cube with openings, representing a building exposed to an atmospheric boundary layer. Tests were performed for smooth building walls but also with modelled vegetation covering the windward façade and the roof of the building. The measurements were performed both at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), in wind tunnels, at common locations around the building. Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) was used at KIT and Particle Image Velocimetry (2C-2D and 3C-2D PIV) at NTUA. In the present data set shows the effect of vegetation on the flow velocities and a comparison of the twin wind tunnel measurements.&nbsp;</p>

Comprehensive 16s rRNA sequencing and metabolomics to investigate the effect of anticancer bioactive peptides combined with oxaliplatin on gastric cancer

Paternal environment effects are driven by female reproductive fluid but not sperm age in an external fertiliser

<p>Sperm ageing after ejaculation can generate paternal environmental effects that impact offspring fitness. In many species, female reproductive fluids (FRFs), i.e. ancillary fluids released by eggs or within the female reproductive tract, may protect sperm from ageing and can additionally interact with sperm to influence offspring viability. This raises the intriguing prospect that FRFs may alleviate paternal effects associated with sperm ageing. Here, we test this novel hypothesis using the broadcast spawning mussel, <em>Mytilus galloprovincialis.</em> We show that incubating sperm in FRF prior to fertilisation increases offspring viability and that these effects occur independently of sperm age. Our results provide novel evidence that FRFs allow females to selectively bias fertilisation toward higher quality sperm within an ejaculate, which in turn yields more viable offspring. We consider this FRF-mediated paternal effect in the context of female physiological control over fertilisation and the transgenerational effects of female-regulated haploid selection.</p>

Effect of hip abduction assistance on metabolic cost and balance during human walking

<p>The use of wearable robots to provide walking assistance has rapidly grown over the last decade, with significant advances made in robot design and control methods toward reducing physical effort while performing an activity. The reduction in the walking effort has mainly been achieved by assisting forward progression in the sagittal plane. Human gait, however, is a complex movement that combines motions in three planes, not only the sagittal but also the transverse and frontal planes. In the frontal plane, the hip joint plays a key role in gait, including balance. However, wearable robots targeting this motion have rarely been investigated. In this study, we developed a hip abduction assistance wearable robot by formulating the hypothesis that assistance that mimics the biological hip abduction moment or power could reduce the metabolic cost of walking and affect the dynamic balance. We found that hip abduction assistance with a biological moment second peak mimic profile reduced the metabolic cost of walking by 11.6% compared to the normal walking condition (p=0.009). The assistance also influenced balance-related parameters, including the margin of stability. Hip abduction assistance influenced the center-of-mass movement in the mediolateral direction. When the robot assistance was applied as the center of mass moved toward the opposite leg, the assistance replaced some of the efforts that would have otherwise been provided by a human. This indicates that hip abduction assistance can reduce physical effort during human walking while influencing balance.</p>

Data for: Multi-generational fitness effects of natural immigration indicate strong heterosis and epistatic breakdown in a wild bird population

<p><span>The fitness of immigrants and their descendants produced within recipient populations fundamentally underpins the genetic </span><span>and population dynamic</span><span> consequences of immigration. </span><span>I</span><span>mmigrants can </span><span>in principle </span><span>induce contrasting genetic effects on fitness across generations, reflecting multi-faceted additive, dominance, and epistatic effects. Y</span><span>et, full multi-generational and sex-specific fitness effects of regular immigration have not been quantified within naturally structured systems, precluding inference on underlying genetic architectures </span><span>and population outcomes</span><span>. We used four decades of song sparrow </span><span>(<em>Melospiza melodia</em>)</span> <span>life-history and pedigree data to quantify fitness of natural immigrants, natives, and their F1, F2, and backcross descendants, and test for evidence of non-additive genetic effects. Values of key fitness components (including adult lifetime reproductive success and zygote survival) of F1 offspring of immigrant-native matings substantially exceeded their parent mean, indicating strong heterosis. Meanwhile, F2 offspring of F1-F1 matings had notably low values, indicating surprisingly strong epistatic breakdown. Further, magnitudes of effects varied among fitness components, and</span> <span>differed between female</span><span>s</span><span> and male</span><span>s</span><span> descendants. These results demonstrate that strong non-additive genetic effects on fitness can arise within </span><span>weakly </span><span>structured </span><span>and fragmented </span><span>populations </span><span>experiencing </span><span>frequent </span><span>natural </span><span>immigration. </span><span>Such effects will substantially affect the net </span><span>degree of effective gene flow and resulting local genetic introgression and adaptation.</span></p>

Research Survey on 'Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Scientific Research'

<p><strong>1. The aim of the research</strong></p><p>The survey aimed to collect opinions on how the pandemic has changed scientific research, especially in regards to the usage of different forms of digital tools. The onset of COVID-19 has had an immediate impact on how scientists were able to use their time and resources to do their work. However, there was a lack of real-time data on how they are responding to this event and how it has had differential impacts across scientific fields.</p><p><strong>2. Research instrument and subject</strong></p><p>A survey questionnaire prepared in English was developed for collecting empirical data from academics in Poland and abroad. We used the same version of the survey questionnaire both in Poland and in other countries in the world. The survey questionnaire consisted of several parts. Its first part included questions on demographic information. The second part of the survey questionnaire contained questions about how respondents' work hours were allocated for different activities during, and after the coronavirus pandemic outbreak and the predicted changes in future publication and funding related to spending on researching, writing during and after the coronavirus pandemic. The last part of the survey questionnaire included questions about scientific works, their quality, and support by ICTs during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the implications of the pandemic for these issues in the future. At the end of the survey questionnaire, we asked respondents about their opinions with regard to the forecast situation in research and education after the coronavirus pandemic. Selecting a sample is a fundamental element of a quantitative study. Stratified sampling was used to obtain the sample, which can be taken to be true for the whole population. The strata were identified based on country, age, gender, position type, and research discipline. To gather a substantial number of respondents, snowball sampling was pursued, which involved daily and routine distribution (social media and e-mail posting) of an introductory e-letter and survey-link requesting participation in the research. To increase response rates, the following methods were used: involving academics (encouraging colleagues), pushing the survey (providing respondents with the survey URL in e-mails sent directly to them), publishing the project with a link for the basic questionnaire on the ResearchGate website and Facebook fan pages and providing frequent reminders.1</p><p><strong>3. Data collection</strong></p><p>Based on several analyses showing that surveys conducted over the internet provide results that are as valid as more "traditional" methods and due to social distancing caused by the coronavirus pandemic, we used the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method for recruiting respondents and collecting data. The LimeSurvey tool was employed for recruiting reliable samples. The data were collected during a two-month period of work, between June 11, 2020, and August 18, 2020. This led to 982 responses. After screening the responses and excluding outliers, 476 usable, correct, and complete responses were collected. This uploded dataset is a subset of a larger dataset that the authors collected for their research project titled "The Effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Scientific Research and University Teaching". It includes the questionnaire responses related to research during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions were designed to gather information about the impact of the pandemic on academic scientists' research.1</p><p><strong>4. Results</strong></p><p>Our results may suggest targeted policies to alleviate the disruptions experienced by specific scientific fields. &nbsp;The findings of the past research were documented in three articles, which can be found below:&nbsp;</p><p>1. Maternal effects on the advertisement signals and mate preferences of adult offspring in Enchenopa treehoppers (Hemiptera: Membracidae)

<p>We tested for maternal effects on the mating signals and mate preferences of adult offspring in a plant-feeding insect that communicates via plant-borne vibrational signals. We experimentally manipulated an aspect of the social environment experienced by egg-laying mothers: aggregation density. We detected a strong maternal effect in a male signal trait, with sons of mothers that experienced low aggregation density signaling more. We also detected a weak maternal effect on female mate preferences, with daughters of mothers that experienced low aggregation density being less selective. We discuss the evolutionary consequences of these maternal effects in terms of the signal-preference relationship; the maintenance of variation under selection; whether they may be beneficial for offspring; and potential mechanisms that may be involved in their expression.</p>

Effects of Salinity on the Reproductive Cycle of the Mangrove Oyster Crassostrea tulipa in Hatchery Conditions

<p>Aim: Development of hatchery techniques for <i>Crassostrea gasar</i> seed supplies, including animal conditioning using salinity manipulation.</p><p>A protocol for conditioning using salinity manipulation for <i>C. gasar</i> was developed based on review of existing literature and data from previous projects. The protocol was tested and evaluated by university partners in southern Brazil, refined by Embrapa and then transferred to industry partners.</p>

Dataset used in the publication entitled "Multi-Point Method using Effective Demodulation and Decomposition Techniques allowing Identification of Disturbing Loads in Power Grids"

<p>Dataset obtained from experimental research carried out in the prepared laboratory setup and information on the performed numerical simulation studies. Based on the dataset, the proposed new method of identification&nbsp;of sources of voltage fluctuation has been validated in the publication: Kuwałek P., Wiczyński G., Multi-Point Method using Effective Demodulation and Decomposition Techniques allowing Identification of Disturbing Loads in Power Grids. The description of the prepared laboratory setup is presented in this publication. The research results are part of the work under the project entitled "Voltage fluctuation diagnostic focused on identification and localization disturbing loads in power grids" funded by the National Science Centre, Poland - 2021/41/N/ST7/00397.</p>

Numerical simulation of the equatorial plasma bubble: the effect of seeding by the vertical winds and random background noise perturbations.

<p>A wide variety of small-amplitude waves widely exist in the ionosphere and have significant effects on the evolution of equatorial plasma bubbles. In this paper,&nbsp;we simulated equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB) seeded by vertical neutral wind perturbations with wavelengths of 125 km and 250 km, and compared the morphology characteristics of plasma bubble structures with those under random noise perturbations in the background density. The numerical results showed that both vertical winds and random background noise perturbations can contribute to the growth of plasma bubbles, and the perturbations under additional random background noise can promote the growth of the plasma bubble structures faster. Additionally, several processes of the nonlinear behavior of bifurcated EPB structures, including bifurcation, pinching, and small-scale turbulent structures, were successfully obtained. Our simulation captured supersonic flows within the low-density plasma structures characterized by vertical velocities of about 1.5 km/s, which is consistent with experimental studies found in the literature.</p>
