MiCORPS Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program Lake Surveys, water chemistry, 1974-2012

The Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program (CLMP) has been an important component of Michigan's inland lakes monitoring program for over 39 years, which makes it the second oldest volunteer monitoring program for lakes in the country. The primary purpose of this cooperative program is to help citizen volunteers monitor indicators of water quality in their lake and document changes in lake quality over time. The goals of the CLMP are: Provide baseline information and document trends in water quality for individual lakes, Educate lake residents, users and interested citizens in the collection of water quality data, lake ecology and lake management practices, provide a cost-effective process for the DEQ to increase baseline data for lakes state-wide. Since 1992, the Michigan Lake and Stream Associations (MLSA) has administered the CLMP jointly with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) under a Memorandum of Understanding. The ML&SA will continue to administer this program under the Michigan Clean Water Corps

Seasonal seabird density and richness of seabirds off Southern California from sampling aboard California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) cruises, 1987 - 2006.

The observational data have been collected as part of long-term fisheries oceanography and seabird monitoring programs designed to inform management of California Current Ecosystem living marine resources. Information collected on seabird distribution and abundance at sea off southern California has been obtained since May 1987 as part of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigation (CalCOFI; http://www.calcofi.net). This program, initiated by R.R. Veit and J.A. McGowan, with funding from the National Science Foundation, has resulted in density (no. birds/km2) estimates of ~60 species of seabirds over the period 1987-present (Veit et al. 1996, 1997, Hyrenbach and Veit 2003, Yen et al. 2006).

Size fractionation of total Chl a larger and smaller than 8 μm data generated by Mike Mullin of the Marine Life Research Group, aboard CalCOFI (California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations) cruises of the coast of California, January 1994 - October 1996.

Based on twelve quarterly cruises over three years, the relative importance and absolute biomass of phytoplankton retained on an 8 mu m-pore membrane filter increased as the depth of the nitricline decreased, even though biomass of macrozooplankton (potential grazers) also increased as the nitricline shoaled. The relative importance of greater than or equal to 8 mu m cells was inversely related to a proxy for their biomass-specific mortality (biomass of macrozooplankton/biomass of greater than or equal to 8 mu m cells), as was their "residual" biomass not predicted from the nitricline depth

Supplementary materials for: Female‐female aggression in a cooperatively breeding bird during the non‐breeding period: The behavioral strategy to maintain long‐term partnerships

<p>Social monogamy evolves in association with biparental care. However, males who tend to pursue multiple mating are expected to place less value on established partnerships, whereas females do the opposite to ensure males'participation in rearing offspring. Accordingly, selection is expected to favor paired females to behave aggressively towards females that approach their social mates. For species with long-term partnerships, female-female aggression commonly observed during the breeding period should also occur in the non-breeding period. We look at whether these expectations are held up by conducting a field experiment in Tibetan ground tits Pseudopodoces humilis, a cooperatively breeding bird that has lifetime monogamy and forms new pair bonds in winter. Paired but not unpaired females were more aggressive towards the same-sex than towards opposite-sex intruders experimentally introduced into the winter group territory, an indication that paired females may be protecting partnerships. Both paired and unpaired males, on the other hand, displayed aggression almost equally against intruders of both sexes, indicating a likely function in territory defense. Our work provides the first evidence for the female's role in maintaining long-term monogamy during the non-breeding period in birds, and contributes to the recent progress regarding intrasexual competition between females as a component of sexual selection.</p>

Sex-specific effects of cooperative breeding and colonial nesting on prosociality in corvids

<p>The investigation of prosocial behavior is of particular interest from an evolutionary perspective. Comparisons of prosociality across non-human animal species have, however, so far largely focused on primates, and their interpretation is hampered by the diversity of paradigms and procedures used. Here we present the first systematic comparison of prosocial behavior across multiple species in a taxonomic group outside the primate order, namely the bird family Corvidae. We measured prosociality in 8 corvid species, which vary in the expression of cooperative breeding and colonial nesting. We show that cooperative breeding is positively associated with prosocial behavior across species. Also colonial nesting is associated with a stronger propensity for prosocial behavior, but only in males. The combined results of our study strongly suggest that both cooperative breeding and colonial nesting, which may both rely on heightened social tolerance at the nest, are likely evolutionary pathways to prosocial behavior in corvids.</p>

Data from: Group size elevates inequality in cooperative behaviour

<p>In cooperatively breeding species where rearing effort is shared among multiple group members, increases in group size typically reduce average per capita contributions to offspring care in all group members (load-lightening) but it is not known how changes in group size affect the distribution of workload among group members. The socioeconomic collective action theory suggests that, in larger groups, the incentives for free riding are stronger, leading to greater inequalities in work-division among group members. Here, we use the Gini index to measure inequality at the group level in the contributions of helpers to three different cooperative behaviours (babysitting, pup-provisioning and raised guarding) in groups of varying size in wild Kalahari meerkats (Suricata suricatta). In larger groups, inequality in helpers' contributions to cooperative activities and the frequency of free riding both increased. Elevated levels of inequality were generated partly as a result of increased differences in contributions to cooperative activities between helpers in different sex and age categories in larger groups. Increasing levels of inequality in contributions to cooperative behaviour were associated with reductions in total pup-provisioning conducted by the group and reductions in total pup provisioning were, in turn, associated with reductions in the growth and survival of pups. Our results support the prediction of collective action theory described above and show how the Gini index can be used to investigate the distribution of cooperative behaviour within the group.</p>
