Propulsion Health Monitoring of a Turbine Engine Disk using Spin Test Data
On line detection techniques to monitor the health of rotating engine components are becoming increasingly attractive options to aircraft engine companies in order to increase safety of operation and lower maintenance costs. Health monitoring remains a challenging feature to easily implement, especially, in the presence of scattered loading conditions, crack size, component geometry and materials properties. The current trend, however, is to utilize noninvasive types of health monitoring or nondestructive techniques to detect hidden flaws and mini cracks before any catastrophic event occurs. These techniques go further to evaluate materials' discontinuities and other anomalies that have grown to the level of critical defects which can lead to failure. Generally, health monitoring is highly dependent on sensor systems that are capable of performing in various engine environmental conditions and able to transmit a signal upon a predetermined crack length, while acting in a neutral form upon the overall performance of the engine system. Efforts are under way at NASA Glenn Research Center through support of the Intelligent Vehicle Health Management Project (IVHM) to develop and implement such sensor technology for a wide variety of applications [1-5]. These efforts are focused on developing high temperature, wireless, low cost and durable products.Therefore, in an effort to address the technical issues concerning health monitoring of a rotor disk, this paper considers data collected from an experimental study using high frequency capacitive sensor technology to capture blade tip clearance and tip timing measurements in a rotating engine-like-disk-to predict the disk faults and assess its structural integrity. The experimental results collected at a range of rotational speeds from tests conducted at the NASA Glenn Research Center's Rotordynamics Laboratory will be evaluated using multiple data-driven anomaly detection techniques [6-9] to identify anomalies in the disk. This study is expected to present a select evaluation of online health monitoring of a rotating disk using these high caliber sensors and test the capability of the in-house spin system.

Longitudinal data analyses reveal a positive effect of bird diversity on human mental health
<p>A growing body of research has focused on the connection between biodiversity and human mental health, but many studies lack longitudinal data, creating problems due to endogeneity. This study stands out by utilizing a newly compiled panel dataset covering the time period between 2015-2019 to investigate the impact of bird diversity exposure on mental health and well-being. By analysing data from around 200,000 individuals from the German National Cohort Health Study and using a unique bird diversity indicator based on citizen-science data, this study found that a greater likelihood of encountering many different bird species in a person's area of residence had a significant positive effect on mental health and well-being. In addition, the study examined how different sensory abilities play a role in this relationship. These findings have national-level implications for biodiversity conservation and public health policy decisions, as it may be the first to offer evidence of the positive impact of bird diversity on human mental well-being while minimizing issues such as omitted variable bias.</p>

PMID: 31630105; PMCID: PMC6803081.</p> <p> </p> <p>This is the abstract:</p> <p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To provide the first epidemiological lifestyle descriptions of the Italian grown-up/adult congenital heart disease (GUCH/ACHD) population by identifying the determinants of poor perceived health status.</p> <p><strong>Design: </strong>Cross-sectional pan-national survey.</p> <p><strong>Setting: </strong>Italian GUCH/ACHD patients who were members of the Italian Association of GUCH/ACHD.</p> <p><strong>Primary and secondary outcome measures: </strong>To discuss these lifestyle descriptions through an ad hoc developed questionnaire and health perceptions (ie, mental and physical health perception) through a short form health survey (SF-12).</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>629 patients included; many investigated GUCH/ACHD lifestyles were determined similar to those of the general population - with the exception of the smoking habits, which were lower. The odds of the occurrence of inadequate physical health perceptions increased by more than two times in patients undergoing antiarrhythmic therapies (OR adjusted=2.045; 95% CI=1.201 to 3.479; p=0.008; n=629), more than 1.5 times in patients taking oral anticoagulants (OR adjusted=1.638; 95% CI=1.038 to 2.585; p=0.034; n=629) and roughly 1.7 times in patients treated with antiplatelets (OR adjusted=1.743; 95% CI=1.024 to 2.966; p=0.041; n=629). The odds of the occurrence of inadequate mental health perceptions increased by 1.7% for every year that the patients aged (OR adjusted=1.017; 95% CI=1.002 to 1.032; p=0.025; n=629).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>Particular attention should be paid to these ageing patients' increasing psychological needs, and additional research is needed to identify associations between their lifestyles and clinical outcomes.</p> <p> </p>

This study aimed to describe health behaviours in adults with congenital heart disease in 15 countries and to identify patient characteristics associated with optimal health behaviours in the international sample.</p> <p><strong>Design: </strong>This was a cross-sectional observational study.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>Adults with congenital heart disease (<em>n</em> = 4028, median age = 32 years, interquartile range 25-42 years) completed self-report measures as part of the Assessment of Patterns of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Adults with Congenital Heart disease - International Study (APPROACH-IS). Participants reported on seven health behaviours using the Health Behaviors Scale-Congenital Heart Disease. Demographic and medical characteristics were assessed via medical chart review and self-report. Multivariate path analyses with inverse sampling weights were used to investigate study aims.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Health behaviour rates for the full sample were 10% binge drinking, 12% cigarette smoking, 6% recreational drug use, 72% annual dental visit, 69% twice daily tooth brushing, 27% daily dental flossing and 43% sport participation. Pairwise comparisons indicated that rates differed between countries. Rates of substance use behaviours were higher in younger, male participants. Optimal dental health behaviours were more common among older, female participants with higher educational attainment while sports participation was more frequent among participants who were younger, male, married, employed/students, with higher educational attainment, less complex anatomical defects and better functional status.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Health behaviour rates vary by country. Predictors of health behaviours may reflect larger geographic trends. Our findings have implications for the development and implementation of programmes for the assessment and promotion of optimal health behaviours in adults with congenital heart disease.</p> <p> </p>

Data from: Health-related quality of life and associated factors after hip fracture. Results from a six-month prospective cohort study
<p>This is the raw data and R code from the paper "Health-related quality of life and associated factors after hip fracture. Results from a six-month prospective cohort study" (project EMAAge).</p> <p><strong>Background.</strong> Hip fractures are a major public health problem with increasing relevance in aging societies. They are associated with high mortality rates, morbidity, and loss of independence. The aim of the EMAAge study was to determine the impact of hip fractures on patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and to identify potential risk factors for worse outcomes. </p> <p><strong>Methods.</strong> EMAAge is a multicenter, prospective cohort study of patients who suffered a hip fracture. Patients or, if necessary, proxies were interviewed after initial treatment and after six months using standardized questionnaires including the EQ-5D-5L instrument, the Oxford Hip Score, the PHQ-4, the Short Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire, and items on patients’ living situation. Medical data on diagnoses, comorbidities, medications, and hospital care were derived from hospital information systems. </p> <p><strong>Results. </strong>A total of 326 patients were included. EQ-5D index values decreased from a mean of 0.70 at baseline to 0.63 at six months. The mean self-rated health on the EQ-VAS decreased from 69.9 to 59.4. Multivariable linear regression models revealed three relevant associated factors with the six-months EQ-5D index: symptoms of depression and anxiety, pre-fracture limitations in activities of daily living, and no referral to a rehabilitation facility had a negative impact. In addition, the six-months EQ-VAS was negatively associated with polypharmacy, living in a facility, and migration background. </p> <p><strong>Conclusions. </strong>Hip fractures have a substantial negative impact on patients’ HRQOL. Our results suggest that there are modifying factors that need further investigation including polypharmacy and migration background. Structured and timely rehabilitation seems to be a protective factor.</p>

The transition clinic model consists of multidisciplinary standardized interventions to educate and support CHD patients and represents a key element in the adequate delivery of care to these individuals during their transition from childhood to adulthood. Currently, empirical data regarding the impact of transition clinic models on the improvement of health perceptions in CHD adolescent patients are lacking.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>A quasi-experimental design was employed. Quality of life, satisfaction, health perceptions and knowledge were assessed at the time of enrolment (T0) and a year after enrolment (T1), respectively. During the follow-up period, the patients enrolled (aged 11-18 years) were involved in the CHD-specific transition clinic model (CHD-TC).</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>A sample of 224 CHD adolescents was enrolled (60.7% boys; mean age: 14.84 ± 1.78 years). According to Warnes' classification, 22% of patients had simple heart defect, 56% showed moderate complexity and 22% demonstrated severe complexity. The overall results suggested a good impact of the CHD-TC on adolescents' outcomes, detailing in T1 the occurrence of a reduction of pain (P < 0.001) and anxiety (P < 0.001) and an improvement of knowledge (P < 0.001), life satisfaction (P < 0.001), perception of health status (P < 0.001) and quality of life (P < 0.001).</p> <p><strong>Conclusion: </strong>The CHD-TC seems to provide high-quality care to the patient by way of a multidisciplinary team. The results of the present study are encouraging and confirm the need to create multidisciplinary standardized interventions in order to educate and support the delivery of care for CHD adolescents and their families.</p>

Given the direct relationship between physical activity and health, promotion of physical activity has the potential to improve outcomes, including quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to describe self-reported physical activity levels in adult Fontan patients and examine associations between physical activity, perceived health status and QOL. The sample consisted of 177 Fontan patients (M<sub>age</sub> = 27.5 ± 7.6 years, 52% male) who reported their physical activity, perceived health status, and QOL as part of the cross-sectional Assessment of Patterns of Patient-Reported Outcomes in Adults with Congenital Heart disease - International Study. Descriptive statistics and univariate analyses of variance with planned contrasts were computed to describe physical activity characteristics. Mediation analyses tested whether perceived health status variables mediated the association between physical activity and QOL. Forty-six percent of patients were sedentary while only 40% met international physical activity guidelines. Higher physical activity was associated with younger age, lower NYHA class, higher perceived general health, and greater QOL. Patients who commuted by walking and engaged in sports reported better perceived health and QOL. Mediation analyses revealed that perceived general health but not NYHA functional class mediated the association between physical activity and QOL (αβ = 0.22, 95% confidence interval = 0.04 to 0.49). In conclusion, Fontan patients likely benefit from regular physical activity, having both higher perceived general health and functional capacity; greater perceived health status may contribute to enhanced QOL. In conclusion, these data support the pivotal role of regular physical activity for Fontan patients.</p>
Octopus: A Novel Approach for Health Data Masking and Retrieving using Physically Unclonable Function and Machine Learning
<p>The health equipment is used to keep track of significant health indicators, automate health interventions, and analyze health indicators. People have begun using mobile applications to track health characteristics and medical demands because all devices are linked to high-speed internet and phones. Such a combination of smart devices, the internet, and mobile applications expands the usage of remote health monitoring through the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). The accessibility and unpredictable aspects of IoMT create massive security and confidentiality threats in IoMT systems. In this proposed paper - Octopus, Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) have been used to provide privacy to the healthcare device by masking the data, and machine learning (ML) techniques are used to retrieve the health data back and reduce security breaches on networks. This technique has exhibited 99.45% accuracy, which proves that this technique could be used to secure health data with masking.</p>
