Dataset for "Mix and measure - combining in situ X-ray powder diffraction and microtomography for accurate hydrating cement studies" paper

Dataset for paper (doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cemconres.2023.107370) with the abstract: "It is reported an innovative methodology based on in situ MoKa1 laboratory X-ray powder diffraction (LXRPD) and microtomography (μCT) avoiding any sample conditioning. The pastes are injected in 2.0 mm capillaries and the extremes are just sealed. The measurements take place in the same region of the hydrating paste. Thick capillaries are key to avoiding self-desiccation, which dictates the need of high-energy X-ray radiation for the diffraction study. This approach has been tested with a PC 42.5 R paste having w/c=0.50. μCT data were collected at 12 hours and 1, 3, 7 and 79 days. LXRPD data were acquired at 1, 3, 7 and 77 days. In this proof-of-principle research, the same paste was also cured ex situ. Portlandite contents obtained by thermal analysis, ex situ powder diffraction, in situ mass balance calculation and in situ powder diffraction were 13.8, 13.1, 13.1 and 12.5 wt%, respectively. From the μCT study, the grey value histogram evolution with time showed a crossing point which allowed us to distinguish (appearing) hydrated products from (dissolving) unhydrated cement particles. Segmentations were carried out by global thresholding and the random forest approach (one type of supervised Machine Learning). The comparison of the segmented results for the unhydrated cement fraction and the Rietveld quantitative phase analysis outputs gave an agreement of 2%. The potential of this methodology to deal with more complex binders is also presented."

Geometric calibration of a double-line X-ray cone-beam tomography system

This dataset correspond to the raw data and measurements presented in the article "Geometric calibration of a double-line X-ray cone-beam tomography system". In this study, an existing single-line calibration method is extended to the case of a double-line X-ray tomograph, based only on the geometrical relation between the different components, and using a simplified calibration phantom. The methodology is tested on the new double tomograph system at INSA Lyon. Walnuts are used as testing phantoms due to their natural irregularity and outstanding internal texture under X-rays.

Two scanning scenarios are selected to represent the wide range of possible geometries that the system can resolve. The first test, referred to as NXGP04, corresponds to an assembly of walnuts inside a container, scanned at a voxel size of 111 μm, and a geometric magnification (i.e., the ratio between SDD and SOD) of 2.7. The second test, referred to as NXGP05, constitutes a scan of a single walnut using a voxel size of 28 μm and a geometric magnification of 10.7. For a given test, all the geometric parameters (i.e., SOD and SDD), as well as the scanning parameters (e.g., voltage and exposure time) are set equally for both lines.

Calibration phantoms are used to measure the geometry of the system for each test. They consist of a set of 7 metallic spheres attached to a foam board arranged along a line. For the test NXGP04, the spheres have 2.5 mm in diameter and are placed using a spacing of 20 mm, while for the test NXGP05, the spheres have 0.8 mm in diameter and spacing of 8.75 mm. In both cases, the size of the spheres in the detectors is such that more than 700 pixels are used to determine their centre, which increases the sensitivity of the calculation.

Data from: An infrared, Raman, and X-ray database of battery interphase components

Further technological advancement of both lithium-ion and emerging battery technologies can be catalyzed by an improved understanding of the chemistry and working mechanisms of the solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) that form at electrochemically active battery interfaces. However, collecting and interpreting spectroscopy results of SEIs is difficult for several reasons, including the chemically diverse composition of SEIs. To address this challenge, we herein present a vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data library of ten suggested SEI chemical constituents relevant to both lithium-ion and emerging battery chemistries. The data library includes attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction data, collected in inert atmospheres afforded by custom designed sample holders. The data library presented in this work (and online repository) alleviates challenges with locating related work that is either diffusely spread throughout the literature, or is non-existent, and provides energy storage researchers streamlined access to vital SEI-relevant data that can catalyse future battery research efforts.

Iterative evaluation of mobile computer-assisted digital chest x-ray screening for TB improves efficiency, yield, and outcomes in Nigeria

Wellness on Wheels (WoW) is a model of mobile systematic tuberculosis (TB) screening of high-risk populations combining digital chest radiography with computer-aided automated detection (CAD) and chronic cough screening to identify presumptive TB clients in communities, health facilities, and prisons in Nigeria. The model evolves to address technical, political, and sustainability challenges.

Screening methods were iteratively refined to balance TB yield and feasibility across heterogeneous populations. Performance metrics were compared over time. Screening volumes, risk mix, number needed to screen (NNS), number needed to test (NNT), sample loss, TB treatment initiation and outcomes. Efforts to mitigate losses along the diagnostic cascade were tracked. Participants with high likelihood on CAD4TB (≥80) who tested negative on a single spot GeneXpert were followed-up to assess TB status at six months.

An experimental calibration method achieved a viable CAD threshold for testing. High-risk groups and key stakeholders were engaged. Operations evolved in real-time to fix problems. Incremental improvements in mean client volumes (128 to 140/day), target group inclusion (92% to 93%), on-site testing (84% to 86%), TB treatment initiation (87% to 91%), and TB treatment success (71% to 85%). Attention to those as highest risk boosted efficiency (the NNT declined from 8.2 ± SD8.2 to 7.6 ± SD7.7). Clinical diagnosis was added after follow-up among those with ≥ 80 CAD scores initially spot-sputum negative found 11 additional TB cases (6.3%) after 121 person-years of follow-up.

Iterative adaptation in response to performance metrics foster feasible, acceptable, and efficient TB case-finding in Nigeria. High CAD scores can identify subclinical TB and those at risk of progression to bacteriologically-confirmed TB disease in the near term.

Policy makers, donors, and community advocates are hesitant to invest in the steep infrastructure costs for mobile digital chest x-ray and GeneXpert MTB/RIF (dCXR/GXP) laboratories without a better understanding of how to maximize and sustain their impact. It is rarely possible to conduct the months of local CAD calibration recommended by experts via costly universal testing with a reference standard.4,9 Stakeholder needs and resource limitations require a more rapid and cost-conscious means of setting a sustainable algorithm. Viable, field-robust methodologies are needed, and optimization strategies informed by routine field findings were lacking. A precise assessment of the contribution of routine mobile TB screening has been challenging because few authors fully disaggregate losses along the diagnostic cascade or track TB treatment outcomes. Publication bias has limited access to results of active case finding pilots with suboptimal risk group targeting, community engagement, yield, or treatment outcomes.10–14 Evaluations (and scrutiny) of routine data are needed that make the demands, constraints, costs and choices facing implementers more explicit.
