Quit bugging me: Phorid fly parasitoids affect expression of an immune gene in foraging fire ant workers

<p>This data contains RT-qPCR and diet measurements for quantifying gene expression of red imported fire ant, <em>Solenopsis invicta </em>workers in the presence and absence of the parasitoid fire ant decapitating fly, <em>Pseudacteon curvatus</em>, and assessing the amount of food after exposure to <em>P. curvatus</em>, respectively. The genes investigated were the <em>Solenopsis invicta</em> <em>foraging gene</em> (<em>Sifor</em>), <em>odorant binding protein 11 </em>(<em>OBP-11</em>), <em>abaecin, defensin-2 </em>(<em>Def-2</em>),<em> cytochrome P450 4C1-like </em>(<em>CYP4C1-like</em>), and <em>hymenoptaecin </em>(<em>hym</em>)<em>. Ribosomal Protein 18</em> (<em>RPL18</em>) was used as the reference gene. These genes of <em>S. invicta</em> workers of unknown infection status in fire ant colonies exposed to decapitating flies and control colonies were observed over a 48-h period. Two diets were measured before and after in control and treatment colonies (i.e., colonies exposed to <em>P. curvatus</em>).</p>

dataset for: Fire activity and drought increases ozone-plant damage to the Amazon rainforest.

<h3>Abstract</h3> <div> <p><strong>This dataset relates to work undertaken for publication 'Fire activity and drought increases ozone-plant damage to the Amazon rainforest.'</strong></p> <p><strong>Datasets and jupyter notebooks allow the figures and data to be reproduced.</strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>ABSTRACT:&nbsp;</strong>Human activity is exposing the Amazon rainforest to increasing stressors, including plant damage due to elevated ozone (O3) pollution. O3-plant damage reduces plant photosynthesis and the land carbon sink thus increasing atmospheric CO2. Factors that control O3-plant damage in the Amazon have not been characterised so damage may be exacerbated by recurrent extreme drought and fires. We identify drivers of interannual variability in O3-plant damage using a land surface model validated against satellite products. We find that O3-plant damage increases with fire activity, with additional interactive effects during major droughts. The indirect increase in atmospheric CO2&nbsp;from fire-driven O3-plant damage is ~50% the magnitude of direct CO2&nbsp;emissions from fires in non-drought years, suggesting the negative impact of fires on the Amazon carbon budget is severely underestimated. During droughts, leaves close their stomata, which reduces O3&nbsp;uptake and should protect against O3&nbsp;damage. However, due to higher fire activity, and elevated O3&nbsp;concentrations, O3-plant damage during droughts is up to 77 Tg-C (or over 2 times) greater than average. As droughts are set to become more frequent, our results demonstrate that high fire activity associated with drought increases the O3-plant damage risk to the rainforest, especially in remote areas.</p> </div>

IoT Sensor Deployment in the Wildland Urban Interface: Leveraging Fire Risk Analysis

<p>Included here are individual burn maps used for evaluating algorithm results in the paper: IoT Sensor Deployment in the Wildland Urban Interface: Leveraging Fire Risk Analysis. This paper will be presented at the IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things in November 2024 and available on IEEE Xplore after that.</p> <p>Also included are maps of fuel load and elevation (geotifs) and the daily weather (in .csv format) for the region of interest used in the burn probability simulator Burn-P3+ to generate the individual burn maps.</p> <p>This paper investigates various algorithms for distributing Internet of Things sensors within the Wildland-Urban Interface to enhance early wildland fire detection. Utilizing geospatial data analysis and a validated wildland fire growth model burn maps were generated to guide sensor placement strategies across a defined region of interest. The algorithms evaluated include an even grid distribution, random distributions, and genetic algorithm-based methods. Each algorithm was tested against 50,000 selected burn maps to assess detection rates, with sensor counts ranging from 50 to 800 across 500 experimental runs. Results indicate that while the even grid distribution yielded the highest detection rates, the practicality of such a method in real-world applications is limited. Genetic algorithms showed promise, but require further exploration to more accurately simulate random distribution used in field deployment. Surprisingly, weighting sensor placement based on wildland fire growth risk did not significantly impact detection effectiveness, suggesting the need for additional research into the representativeness of selected burn maps.</p> <p>Partial code for the sensor deployment algorithms discussed in the above mentioned paper is <a href="https://github.com/richardjpurcell/sensor-deployment-algorithms">available on GitHub</a>.</p>
