Experimental data: Inferring strategies from observations in long iterated prisoner's dilemma experiments

While many theoretical studies have revealed the strategies that could lead to and maintain cooperation in the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, less is known about what human participants actually do in this game and how strategies change when being confronted with anonymous partners in each round. Previous attempts used short experiments, made different assumptions of possible strategies, and led to very different conclusions. We present here two long treatments that differ in the partner matching strategy used, i.e. fixed or shuffled partners. Here we use unsupervised methods to cluster the players based on their actions and then Hidden Markov Model to infer what are those strategies in each cluster. Analysis of the inferred strategies reveals that fixed partner interaction leads to a behavioral self-organization. Shuffled partners generate subgroups of strategies that remain entangled, apparently blocking the self-selection process that leads to fully cooperating participants in the fixed partner treatment. Analyzing the latter in more detail shows that AllC, AllD, TFT- and WSLS-like behavior can be observed. This study also reveals that long treatments are needed as experiments less than 25 rounds capture mostly the learning phase participants go through in these kinds of experiments.

Tidally modulated temperature observed atop a drillsite at the Noho hydrothermal site, mid-Okinawa Trough

These are the dataset used in a manuscript submitted to J. Geophys. Res. (AGU), entitled "Tidally modulated temperature observed atop a drillsite at the Noho hydrothermal site, mid-Okinawa Trough" by Kinoshita, M, K. Kitada and T. Nozaki. It is in revision as of June 10 2022.

The authors of this dataset include those who organized or participated the expeditions and contributed to obtain the data shown here.

Abstract

We observed temperature variations over 10 months within a Kuroko ore (hydrothermal sulfide) cultivation apparatus installed atop a 50-m-deep borehole drilled in the Noho hydrothermal system in the mid-Okinawa Trough, southwestern Japan, for monitoring of hydrothermal fluids and in situ mineral precipitation experiments. Temperature and pressure in the apparatus fluctuated with the tidal period immediately after its installation. Initially, the average temperature was 75–76 °C and the amplitude of the semi-diurnal tidal temperature modulation was ~0.3 °C. Four months later, the amplitude of tidal temperature modulation had gradually increased to 4 °C in synchrony with an average temperature decrease to ~40 °C. Numerical modeling showed that both the increase in tidal amplitude and the decrease in average temperature were attributable to a gradual decrease in inflow to the apparatus, which promoted conductive cooling through the pipe wall. The reduced inflow was probably caused by clogging inside the apparatus, but we cannot rule out a natural cause, because the drilling would have significantly decreased the volume of hot fluid in the reservoir. The temperature fluctuation phase lagged the pressure fluctuation phase by ~150°. Assuming that the fluctuations originated from inflow from the reservoir, we conducted 2-D numerical hydrothermal modeling for a poroelastic medium. To generate the 150° phase lag, the permeability in the reservoir needed to exceed that in the ambient formation by ~3 orders of magnitude. The tidal variation phase can be a useful tool for assessing the hydrological state and response of a hydrothermal system.

Key Points

Temperature and pressure atop a borehole in the mid-Okinawa Trough hydrothermal system fluctuated with the tidal period during 10 months.

The temperature tidal fluctuation phase lagged pressure by ~150° likely because of the poroelastic response of higher permeability sediment.

A gradual temperature decrease and tidal amplitude increase were caused by reduced inflows that promoted conductive cooling.

Explanation of the dataset

*Fig.3_rawdata_C9017B_Long.txt:
*Fig.3_rawdata_C9017B_Short:
Temperature and pressure data recorded by the probes in the cell (Fig.3_rawdata_C9017B_Long) and the bottom inflow pipe (Fig.3_rawdata_C9017B_Short) during the whole observation period. Supplementary data for "How adequately are elevated moist layers represented in reanalysis and satellite observations?"

The NetCDF files are the collocation datasets over Manus Island between GRUAN radiosondes, ERA5, the CLIMCAPS Aqua Level 2 retrieval dataset and the IASI L2 Climate Data Record (CDR). The collocation criteria are 30 minutes and 50 km. Additional filter criteria for the individual datasets and processing steps are described in the manuscript.

The datasets are created using the collocation toolkit included in the python package "typhon". Variables in each dataset are split into two groups that represent the two collocated datasets. Each group contains a selection of the original dataset's variables, which are used in the manuscript such as H2O VMR, temperature, cloud fraction, etc. The variables are organized along the dimension "collocation" and along dataset and variable specific additional dimensions. Further documentation about the collocation toolkit and the structure of the resulting datasets can be found at https://github.com/atmtools/typhon.

Real-time observation of alpha nucleation in Ti-6Al-4V

This video was captured during an in-situ heating stage SEM experiment using a secondary electron camera at the University of Manchester, UK. The Ti-6Al-4V sample was heated to 1000°C to the full β-phase field and then slowly cooled (0.3°C/s) through the β transus, and the α-phase nucleation was recorded by the contrast change in the secondary electron camera from topography development on the sample surface due to surface relief. Microscope operated by Dr Alec E Davis and Dr Jack Donoghue, sample preparation by Nick Byres. Observed Indian Ocean Warming Trend Applied to the IPSL-CM6A-LR model

This experiment applies the observed warming trend of the tropical Indian Ocean (0.15 deg C per decade; Hu and Fedorov, 2019) to the tropical Indian Ocean region in the IPSL-CM6A-LR pre-industrial control run. The methods of nudging are defined in Ferster et al. (2021), where here we apply an observed warming rate rather than a constant (as in Ferster et al., 2021).

This experiment relates to the submitted article entitled Variations in tropical Indian Ocean SST drive multi-decadal AMOC variability in models and observations.

*The datasets are created from the IPSL-CM6A-LR output files

**This version serves as a preliminary version of the dataset for publication purposes, additional output is available.
