Data from: Mandated reporters' experiences with reporting child maltreatment: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies
Objective: To systematically search for research about the effectiveness of mandatory reporting of child maltreatment and to synthesize qualitative research that explores mandated reporters' (MRs) experiences with reporting. Design: As no studies assessing the effectiveness of mandatory reporting were retrieved from our systematic search, we conducted a meta-synthesis of retrieved qualitative research. Searches in Medline (OVID), Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Sociological Abstracts, ERIC, Criminal Justice Abstracts, and Cochrane Library yielded over 6000 citations, which were deduplicated and then screened by two independent reviewers. English-language, primary qualitative studies that investigated MRs' experiences with reporting of child maltreatment were included. Critical appraisal involved a modified checklist from the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) and qualitative meta-synthesis was used to combine results from the primary studies. Setting: All healthcare and social-service settings implicated by mandatory reporting laws were included. Included studies crossed nine high-income countries (United States, Australia, Sweden, Taiwan, Canada, Norway, Finland, Israel and Cyprus) and three middle-income countries (South Africa, Brazil, and El Salvador). Participants: The studies represent the views of 1088 MRs. Outcomes: Factors that influence MRs' decision to report and MRs' views towards and experiences with mandatory reporting of child maltreatment. Results: Forty-four articles reporting 42 studies were included. Findings indicate that MRs struggle to identify and respond to less overt forms of child maltreatment. While some articles (14%) described positive experiences MRs had with the reporting process, negative experiences were reported in 73% of articles and included accounts of harm to therapeutic relationships and child death following removal from their family of origin. Conclusions: The findings of this meta-synthesis suggest that there are many potentially harmful experiences associated with mandatory reporting and that research on the effectiveness of this process is urgently needed.

CYBERBULLYING AND CHILD DEPRESSION IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS SYSTEMATIC MAPPING

Violence in the school stage at the virtual level is called cyberbullying that aims to belittle and mock the victim through the internet, which is usually anonymously and with a large number of audiences, bringing with it different consequences in the victims among they, depression, which is the set of symptoms that negatively affect a person's day-to-day life in all areas in which they develop. The objective of this work was to outline the search for the results of studies that examine the relationship between cyberbullying and depression in children and adolescents through the analysis of the database of scientific research and articles worldwide, between the years 2014 and 2021 through systematic mapping. The SCOPUS database was consulted, and a total of 85 potentially useful articles were found, but when applying the typing criteria, a total of 23 were reached.

A pragmatic randomized maternal education trial in rural Uganda - Eight years of sustained improvement in child development

Background

Nutrition and stimulation interventions may promote early childhood development, but little is known about the long-term benefits of such interventions, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. We now conducted a follow-up study on a cluster-randomized maternal education trial that was conducted when their children were 6–8 months old, to assess the sustainability of the developmental benefits eight years after the intervention.

Methods and findings

The intervention consisted of education in nutrition, hygiene, oral sanitation and child stimulation. In the current study, we assessed child processing and cognitive abilities using the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children Second Edition (KABC-II) and attention and inhibitory control using the Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA). Using Stata version 17.0, t-tests and multi-level regression were employed to compare scores from KABC-II and TOVA tests in the two study groups adjusting for clustering effect. The data were analyzed by intention-to-treat. The original trial included 511 mother-child pairs (intervention n=263, control n=248), whereas in the current study, 361 (71%; intervention n=185, control n=176) pairs were available for analyses. The intervention group scored higher than the controls (all P-values<0.001) on all five KABC-II sub-scales, as well as on the KABC-II global score (mean difference: 14, 95% CI: 12–16; P<0.001). Furthermore, for all five TOVA variables, the intervention group scored higher than the controls in both the visual and auditory tasks (all P-values <0.05). The main limitation is that we were unable to determine the exact individual contribution of each component (nutrition, hygiene and stimulation) of the intervention to the developmental benefits since they were all delivered as a combined package.

Conclusions

The intervention group consistently scored markedly higher on both psychometric tests. Thus, even eight years after the original maternal education intervention, the developmental benefits that we observed at child age of one, two and three years, were sustained.
