<p>The original figure plates and associated images for "<strong>A new fossil species of the reticulated beetle genus <em>Cupes</em> (Coleoptera: Archostemata: Cupedidae) from Eocene Baltic amber</strong>" in Zootaxa.</p> <p> </p> <h3>Abstract</h3> <p>The single extant species of the reticulated beetle genus <em>Cupes</em> Fabricius is confined to North America. In contrast, a diverse and abundant fossil record of the genus has been documented in Cenozoic deposits in Europe, especially in Eocene Baltic amber. This paper describes another species, <em>Cupes balticus</em> <strong>sp. n.</strong>, as the eighth named species of the genus from Baltic amber. The discovery of an additional <em>Cupes</em> species further evidences the hidden paleodiversity of reticulated beetles in European Eocene forests.</p> <p> </p> <p>Yamamoto, S. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS-attributed mortalities and associated sociodemographic factors in Papua New Guinea: Evidence from the comprehensive health and epidemiological surveillance system
<p>Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS are public health concerns in Papua New Guinea (PNG). This study examines TB and HIV/AIDS mortalities and associated sociodemographic factors in PNG. Method: As part of a longitudinal study, verbal autopsy (VA) interviews were conducted using the WHO 2016 VA Instrument to collect data of 926 deaths occurred in the communities within the catchment areas of the Comprehensive Health and Epidemiological Surveillance System from 2018-2020. InterVA-5 cause of deaths analytic tool was used to assign specific causes of death (COD). Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify associated sociodemographic factors, estimate odds ratios (OR), 95% confidential intervals and p-values. Result: TB and HIV/AIDS were the leading CODs from infectious diseases, attributed to 9% and 8% of the total deaths, respectively. Young adults (25-34 years) had the highest proportion of deaths from TB (20%) and the risk of dying from TB among this age group was five times more likely than those aged 75+ years (OR: 5.5 [1.4-21.7]). Urban population were 46% less likely to die from this disease compared rural ones (OR: 0.54 [0.3-1.0]). People from middle household wealth quintile were three times more likely to die from TB than those in the richest quintile (OR: 3.0 [1.3-7.4]). Young adults also had the highest proportion of deaths to HIV/AIDS (18%) and were nearly seven times more likely to die from this disease compared with those aged 75+ years (OR: 6.7 [1.7-25.4]). Males were 48% less likely to die from HIV/AIDS than females (OR: 0.52 [0.3-0.9]). The risk of dying from HIV/AIDS in urban population was 54% less likely than their rural counterparts (OR: 0.46 [0.2-0.9]). Conclusion: TB and HIV/AIDS interventions are needed to target high-risk and vulnerable populations to reduce premature mortality from these diseases in PNG.</p>

Assessment of the association of new biomarkers (GDF15, ST2, galectin-3, TIMP-1, MMP-9, NfL) and plasma prothrombotic potential in the course of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis.
<p><span>The development of cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR) is caused by the deposition of misfolded, insoluble proteins in the extracellular matrix of tissues. An important element of the clinical presentation of the disease is the increased risk of thromboembolic complications. Currently, there is limited published data on the potential role of new heart failure biomarkers in the assessment of ATTR cardiomyopathy, particularly in the assessment of asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic transthyretin (TTR) variants.</span></p> <p><span>Purpose of the study: To assess the diagnostic value of biomarkers related to heart failure (growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF15), soluble suppression of tumorigenicity-2 (ST2), galectin-3), amyloidosis ( retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4, transthyretin) , tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9, matrix metalloproteinase-9), neurofilament light chain (NfL)) and the generation potential thrombin as a marker of the prothrombotic state in the course of ATTR.</span></p> <p><span>Methods: This prospective, single-center study included consecutive patients diagnosed with ATTR, asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic TTR variants, and a matched control group of healthy volunteers. The values of these biomarkers were evaluated using the ELISA method from peripheral blood (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) GDF15, ST2, RBP4 (TTR), TIMP-1, MMP-9, galectin-3, NfL. Additionally, the prothrombotic potential of plasma was tested using the calibrated automatic thrombogram (CAT) method. Results are presented in Table 1. </span><span>The demographic and clinical characteristics of the study population are presented in Table 2 and Table 3.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusions: The project provides information on the value of novel biomarkers in the assessment of ATTR cardiomyopathy, especially in the assessment of asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic TTR variants. Moreover, it evaluated prothrombotic state in the course of ATTR.</span></p>
New Zealand native forest plant cover data for Popovic et al. MEE (2019), Untangling direct species associations from indirect mediator species effects with graphical models.
<p>Forest cover measurements were collected at 1246 native forest sites that form part of a network of permanent 20 x 20 m plots spread throughout New Zealand. A total of 1831 plant species were present in these plots, with the most common being herbs, graminoids, ferns, shrubs and trees. Plant cover (in ordinal categories) was assessed for each species in several tiers at different heights. The cover data we analysed (<em>NZ_native_forest_cover.csv) </em>were the maximum cover recorded over all the tiers at the 964 sites identified as native forests, containing 1311 species with at least one presence. <em>NZ_native_forest_species.csv</em> contains species data including species name, exotic/native, and plant type (tree, shrub, etc.), corresponding to the plant species in the columns of <em>NZ_native_forest_cover.csv</em>.</p> <p>We acknowledge the use of data drawn from the Natural Forest plot data collected between January 2002 and March 2007 by the LUCAS programme for the Ministry for the Environment, New Zealand.</p> <p> </p>
