Data from: Combined fluorescent and electron microscopic imaging unveils the specific properties of two classes of meiotic crossovers
<p>Crossovers (COs) shuffle genetic information and allow balanced segregation of homologous chromosomes during the first division of meiosis. Recombination nodules (RNs) are closely correlated with crossing over, and, because they are observed by electron microscopy of synaptonemal complexes (SCs) in extended pachytene chromosomes, RNs provide the highest-resolution cytological marker currently available for defining the frequency and distribution of crossovers along the length of chromosomes. In several organisms, mutants demonstrate that two molecularly distinct pathways produce COs. One pathway produces class I COs that exhibit interference (lowered probability of nearby COs), and the other pathway produces class II COs with little or no interference. However, the relative contributions, genomic distributions, and interactions of these two pathways are essentially unknown in nonmutant organisms because marker segregation only indicates that a CO has occurred, not its class type. Here, we combine the efficiency of light microscopy for revealing cellular functions using a fluorescent probe to MLH1 proteins to mark class I COs with the high resolution of electron microscopy to localize and characterize all COs (RNs) in the same sample of meiotic pachytene chromosomes from wild-type tomato. To our knowledge, for the first time, every CO along each chromosome can be identified by class to unveil specific characteristics of each pathway. We find that class I (MLH1-positive) and class II (MLH1-negative) COs have different recombination profiles along chromosomes. In particular, class II COs, which represent about 18% of all COs, exhibit no interference and are disproportionately represented in pericentric heterochromatin, a feature potentially exploitable in plant breeding. Finally, our results demonstrate that the two pathways are not independent because there is interference between class I and II COs.</p>

Moth proboscis morphology material properties raw data
<p>Insects have evolved unique structures that host a diversity of material and mechanical properties, and the mouthparts (proboscis) of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) are no exception. Here, we examined proboscis morphology and material properties from several previously unstudied moth lineages to determine if they relate to flower-visiting and non-flower-visiting feeding habits. Scanning electron microscopy and 3D imaging were used to study proboscis morphology and assess surface roughness patterns on the galeal surface, respectively. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to study patterns of cuticular autofluorescence, which was quantified with color analysis software. We found that moth proboscises display similar color and morphological patterns in relation to these feeding habits as those previously described for flower and non-flower-visiting butterflies. The distal region of proboscises of non-flower visitors is brush-like for augmented capillarity and exhibited blue autofluorescence, indicating the possible presence of resilin and increased flexibility. Flower visitors have smoother proboscises and show red autofluorescence, an indicator of high sclerotization, which is adaptive for floral tube entry. We propose the lepidopteran proboscis as a model structure for understanding how insects have evolved a suite of morphological and material adaptations to overcome the challenges of acquiring fluids from diverse sources.</p>

Woody debris removal modifies carbon stocks and soil properties in a fragmented tropical rainforest
<p>We examined whether and how woody debris removal for domestic fuel affects carbon storage and soil properties in an Indian rainforest. Fuelwood removal reduced aboveground carbon stocks, increased soil bulk density, and possibly reduced soil phosphorus stocks. Equitably balancing this subtle trade-off between climate-regulating and vital, widely-utilized provisioning functions, is a challenge for tropical forest research and management.</p>
Extraocular muscle stem cells exhibit distinct cellular properties associated with non-muscle molecular signatures
<p>The muscle stem cell (MuSC) population is recognized as functionally heterogeneous. Cranial muscle stem cells, which originate from head mesoderm, can have greater proliferative capacity in culture and higher regenerative potential in transplantation assays when compared to those in the limb. The existence of such functional differences in phenotypic outputs remain unresolved as a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms is lacking. We addressed this issue using a combination of clonal analysis, live imaging, and scRNA-seq, identifying critical biological features that distinguish extraocular (EOM) and limb (Tibialis anterior, TA) MuSC populations. Time-lapse studies using a MyogenintdTomato reporter showed that the increased proliferation capacity of EOM MuSCs is accompanied by a differentiation delay in vitro. Unexpectedly, in vitro activated EOM MuSCs expressed a large array of distinct extracellular matrix (ECM) components, growth factors, and signaling molecules that are typically associated with mesenchymal non-muscle cells. These unique features are regulated by a specific set of transcription factors that constitute a coregulating module. This transcription factor network, which includes Foxc1 as one of the major players, appears to be hardwired to EOM identity as it is present in quiescent adult MuSCs, in the activated counterparts during growth and retained upon passages in vitro. These findings provide insights into how high-performing MuSCs regulate myogenic commitment by active remodeling of their local environment.</p>
Soil properties shape the heterogeneity of denitrification and N2O emissions across large-scale flooded paddy soils
<p>The dataset's contents include the relative abundance of different denitrifier types at the genus level across eight different flooded paddy soils. This dataset categorizes denitrifier types in its first column labeled 'Type.' The second column, 'Genus,' associates each type with various species at the genus level. Subsequent columns present the relative abundance of these species in diverse sampling locations. Researchers can leverage this dataset to derive more patterns regarding the differences within specific dominant denitrifier species. No ethical considerations are pertinent to the utilization of this dataset.</p>
Aggregated database of forest soil chemical properties in the Czech Republic based on surveys from 2000-2020.
<p>The dataset includes data from forest soil surveys conducted in the period 2000–2020. It provides soil and site variables from 8,269 locations. <p>CMAD, an acronym for Conflicting Marks Archive Dataset, is a dataset that has been meticulously organized into pairs of marks (Number of pairs=18,355) involved in conflicts of copyright infringement between word, figurative and mixed marks. Marks sought registration with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) in Brazil, and had their applications denied after analysis by intellectual property specialists.</p>

Single scattering properties of ice hydrometeors between 0.2 and 99 um (Bi and Yang, 2017)
<p>This dataset contains the single-scattering properties of ice particles from Yang et al. (2013), including the refinements by Bi and Yang (2017), converted to the XML format of the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator (ARTS). The data correspond to various shapes and particle surface roughness, covering wavelengths between 0.2 and 99 um. <p>UV-Vis:<br>The optical properties were measured from 300 nm to 800 nm. The transmittance and haze were calculated using the following equations, and the results were reported for three sets of measurements:<br>Transmittance (%) = T2/T1 × 100 <br>Haze (%) = (T4/T2 - T3/T1) × 100 <br>where T1 is the reference transmitted light without the sample, T2 is the total light transmitted with the presence of the sample, T3 is light beam scattering by the UV-Vis device, and T4 is the diffusive transmittance, referring to the light transmitted by both the sample and the device. <br>The zip files are named by noting 'UV-Vis' followed by the type of sample.</p> <p>Current density-Voltage:<br>Seven sets of measurements were conducted on perovskite solar cell (PSC) devices, comparing the performance of uncoated (noted as pristine) devices to those coated with the replica. Additionally, another seven sets of measurements compared the performance of devices with and without the replica+2%CW coating. The data are recorded in .txt files noted by 'Current density-Voltage spectra.'</p> <p>Light scattering with halogen light beam:<br>The intensity of the illuminated light is determined for the length of a horizontal line passing through the center by using image analysis. Data from: Relationships between rhizosphere microbial communities, soil abiotic properties and root trait variation within a pine species
<p>Rhizosphere microbes play important roles in plant performance and ecosystem functioning. It is becoming increasingly clear that rhizosphere communities vary with soil properties and variation in root traits among plant species. However, less is known about whether and how variation in root traits within plant species influences the rhizosphere microbial communities.</p> <p>We evaluated the intraspecific root traits variation and explored their associations with bacterial and fungal communities in rhizosphere by focusing on an ectomycorrhizal tree<em> </em>species, i.e., <em>Pinus massoniana</em>, in 22 sites in subtropical China.</p> <p>The first dimension of the principal component analysis on root traits revealed evidence for the 'conservation' gradient of the root economics space. Overall, root traits explained more variation in fungal communities than in bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. Functional composition of rhizosphere microbial communities changed significantly along the 'conservation' gradient, with fast-growing copiotrophic bacteria and symbiotic ectomycorrhizal fungi were significantly enriched on the 'acquisition' side, while slow-growing oligotrophic bacteria were significantly enriched on the 'conservation' side of the gradient.</p> <p><strong><em>Synthesis</em></strong>: Our study demonstrates that intraspecific variation in plant roots significantly influence rhizosphere microbial communities, which in turn can influence plant nutrition and therefore plant performance within the community.</p>
