Climatic-oceanographic controls on Amundsen Sea productivity and bottom flow evolution since 280 ka

Understanding the mechanisms regulating productivity and bottom flow variability in the Amundsen Sea is vital for constraining cryosphere-climate feedbacks in the South Pacific Seasonal Sea Ice Zone. To enhance our comprehension of the mechanisms underlying productivity variations in this region, we present an extensive set of multi-proxy records from gravity core ANT36/A3-08 (LATITUDE: -69.02 and LONGITUDE: -120.06), retrieved from the southernmost upwelling boundary of the modern Circumpolar Deep Water in the Amundsen Sea.

Surface productivity is reconstructed using a suite of biogeochemical proxies, including Ti-normalized bromine, biogenic opal, total nitrogen, and excess barium normalized to Ti. These proxies reflect marine biogenic export production and nutrient cycling. Bottom flow strength is inferred from sedimentological and geochemical indicators such as mean sortable silt, sortable silt percentage, zirconium-to-rubidium, and zirconium-to-aluminum ratios.

Understanding Near-Ground Tornado Flows - Pressure, Shear and Turbulence, and their Importance in Structural Loading

Dataset Description

The research focuses on the velocity and pressure field of the near-ground region within one of the Wind Engineering, Energy, and Environment (WindEEE) Dome's tornadic-like flow simulations. This research also aims to provide valuable insight in the behaviour between tornado-building interactions. Measurement regions of interest range from the apparent centre of the tornado-like flow structure extending beyond twice the radius of maximum tangential velocity.

Two vortex cases were simulated and measured:

(1) TV0 - a stationary vortex where the bell mouth (updraft centre) aligns with the centre of the test chamber, and

(2) TV1 - a vortex translating for a distance of 4.5 m at a nominal translation speed of about 1-1.2 m/s.

S0. Documentation

Contains information documents regarding the instrumentation specifications, test plan, and other important diagrams.

S1. Near-Ground Flow Model

TV0 and TV1 simulations were tested at the WindEEE Dome testing facility. Velocity measurement devices were used to characterize simulated vortex's horizontal flow field at heights of 3.2, and 7.2. Pressure measurement devices were used to characterize the vortex's ground surface pressure. These measurements aim to provide data for more accurate tornado wind field models.

E1. Near-Ground Velocity Field

During this test, 3-D point measurements were taken to aid in characterizing TV0 and TV1 simulations. Measurements were taken at locations R = 0, 60 and 105 cm measured perpendicularly from the bell mouth's path of translation. Two heights and four point positions were captured at each location. These measurements aim to provide detailed characteristics of the wind field.

E2. Ground Surface Instantaneous Pressure Field

A ground surface pressure model covering an area of 120 cm by 300 cm was used to characterize the ground pressure distribution of simulations: TV0 and TV1. Instantaneous pressure measurement devices captured the flow distribution throughout a 2-D grid of pressure taps mounted flush with the ground surface panels.

S2. Low-Rise Building Model

A 3:12 roof slope, 1:100 scale, low-rise building model was instrumented with external surface pressure taps and tested under TV0 and TV1 flow simulations at WindEEE. The low-rise building model was measured in locations R = 0, 60, and 105 cm measured perpendicularly from the bell mouth translation pat, and at azimuth angles 0, 45, and 90 degrees relative to the path of the bell mouth.

E1. Low-Rise Building Aerodynamics

The effects of stationary and translating vortices on a low-rise building model were investigated.

S3. Small-Portable Temporary Building Model

A temporary low-rise building was instrumented with external surface pressure taps and tested under TV0 and TV1 flow simulations at WindEEE. The small-portable building model of size 1.2 cm by 1.2 cm by 3.2 cm (1:70 scale) and ground surface model covering 120 cm by 300 cm. The small-portable building was measured in locations R = 0, 60, and 105 cm measured perpendicularly from the bell mouth translation path.

E1. Small-Portable Temporary Building Aerodynamics

The effects of stationary and translating vortices on a small-portable building model were investigated.

S4. Near-Ground Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)

A Continuum laser was focused and split through a cylindrical lens into a thin laser sheet, fog machines were used to seed the entire test chamber with long lasting fog fluid, and finally synchronized high-resolution cameras (flares) were used to capture laser light refraction. Flares send image data to the DVR Express Cores during test measurements. This PIV system was used to measure the horizontal velocity field of simulations: TV0 with an approximate total coverage of 80 cm by 240 cm.

E1. Near-Ground Horizontal Velocity Field

The PIV system was used to measure the 2-D velocity field at a height of 7.2 cm from the chamber floor. The plane of measure covers regions from the tornado-like flow's apparent centre to beyond the region of maximum tangential velocity.

E2. Low-Rise Building Wake Aerodynamics

A low-rise building model was measured at the centre of the test chamber, subject to the tornado vortex TV0. The model was made black to absorb energy and light from the PIV laser. The PIV system was used to measure the 2-D velocity field at a height of 7.2 cm from the chamber floor.

Note: Due to storage limitations we cannot include the entire PIV raw dataset, however data can be made available apon request. Please email the project contact person or the hosting instution (Contact – WindEEE Research Facility) for information or access to the complete dataset.

Data from: Gene flow and isolation in the arid Nearctic revealed by genomic analyses of desert spiny lizards

The opposing forces of gene flow and isolation are two major processes shaping genetic diversity. Understanding how these vary across space and time is necessary to identify the environmental features that promote diversification. The detection of considerable geographic structure in taxa from the arid Nearctic has prompted research into the drivers of isolation in the region. Several geographic features have been proposed as barriers to gene flow, including the Colorado River, Western Continental Divide, and a hypothetical Mid-Peninsular Seaway in Baja California. However, recent studies suggest that the role of barriers in genetic differentiation may have been overestimated when compared to other mechanisms of divergence. In this study, we infer historical and spatial patterns of connectivity and isolation in Desert Spiny Lizards (Sceloporus magister) and Baja Spiny Lizards (S. zosteromus), which together form a species complex composed of parapatric lineages with wide distributions in arid western North America. Our analyses incorporate mitochondrial sequences, genomic-scale data, and past and present climatic data to evaluate the nature and strength of barriers to gene flow in the region. Our approach relies on estimates of migration under the multispecies coalescent to understand the history of lineage divergence in the face of gene flow. Results show that the S. magister complex is geographically structured, but we also detect instances of gene flow. The Continental Divide is a strong barrier to gene flow, while the Colorado River is more permeable. Analyses yield conflicting results for the catalyst of differentiation of peninsular lineages in S. zosteromus. Our study shows how large-scale genomic data for thoroughly sampled species can shed new light on biogeography. Furthermore, our approach highlights the need for the combined analysis of multiple sources of evidence to adequately characterize the drivers of divergence.

Data from: Predator-driven behavioral shifts in a common lizard shape resource-flow from marine to terrestrial ecosystems

We conducted a field experiment to assess foraging niche dynamics of semiarboreal brown anole lizards in the presence/absence of predatory ground-dwelling curly tailed lizards in a replicated set of island ecosystems. Data used in this study includes ecological infomration for the replicated islands of study (i.e. relative arthropod and seaweedabundances) together with phenotypic data of the lizards studied (body mass, size, body condition, as well as behavioral traits describing risk-taking behavior) as well as habitat use data and marine component of diet as a surrogate of the diet of these lizards. One year after experimental translocation, brown anoles exposed to these predators increased perch height and reduced consumption of marine-derived food resources. We also use this dataset to investigate if this foraging niche shift altered marine-to-terrestrial resource-flow dynamics and persisted in the diets of the first-generation offspring. Finally, we also assessed if lizards that displayed more risk-taking behaviors consumed more marine prey on islands with predators present.

Highland islands: assessing gene flow among populations of an aquatic highland endemic

A variety of hierarchical gene flow models have been proposed to explain the distribution of genetic variation in aquatic environments. These models, including the Stream Hierarchy (SH), Death Valley (DV), Headwater (HW), and Widespread Gene flow (WG) models, provide testable hypotheses that focus on the degree of within-basin or within-stream network connectivity and an organism's dispersal abilities. We tested these models using Tlaloc hildebrandi (Profundulidae, Cyprinodontiformes), a freshwater fish endemic to the highlands of the Grijalva and Usumacinta River basins in southern Mexico. Data from ultraconserved elements (UCEs) showed that although T. hildebrandi was recovered as monophyletic, the sub-basins were not. We generated single nucleotide polymorphisms from the UCEs to analyse the data in a population genetic framework. These results differed between analyses such that two (STRUCTURE analysis) or three (DAPC analysis) genetic groupings were recovered. Overall, the results of this study provide support for the SH model. Some individuals from the Jataté sub-basin, however, conformed to the HW model, due to historical connections among headwater streams and rivers of the Jataté and Amarillo–Chenalhó clades/clusters. The greatest degree of gene flow has occurred from the Grijlava to the Usumacinta basins, two geographically proximate basins that have been hypothesized to have had previous connections.

Mapping and modelling global mobility infrastructure stocks, material flows and their embodied greenhouse gas emissions - Data

Dynamics of societal material stocks such as buildings and infrastructures and their spatial patterns drive surging resource use and emissions. Building up and maintaining stocks requires large amounts of resources; currently stock-building materials amount to almost 60% of all materials used by humanity.
