SBC LTER: Reef: Surge uptake capability in Macrocystis pyrifera in response to pulses of three different forms of nitrogen

This data describes the capacity of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera to exhibit surge uptake of three different forms of nitrogen in whole-blade incubation experiments done in spring and summer 2019. The data is contained in 2 tables: 1) uptake rates of 15N labeled nitrate, ammonium, and urea by blades exposed to pulses of nitrogen for periods lasting 1, 5, 15 and 45 min, 2) uptake rates of 15N labeled nitrate, ammonium, and urea for specific time intervals of pulsed nitrogen (e.g., 0-1 min, 1-5 min, 5-15 min and 15-45 min).

Dataset Mother-offspring conflict for water varies across altitude and is mitigated in the oviparous form of the bimodal lizard Zootoca vivipara

The female dataset provides the responses of gravid and non reproductive female common lizard to a two week period of water restriction. This includes the measures of body mass (BM) and plasma osmolality (osmo) at the onset and the end of this timing. Dataset also reports different information on reproductive performance and characteristics of the population they came from.

The juvenile dataset provides the morphological (snout-vent length: SVL, body mass: BM) and the sex of hatchling. We also included information about mother identity (cltuch effect), mother treatment and the characteristics of populations they came from.

Raw mass spectrometry data for publication "Vertebrate cellular endolysosome modulating pore-forming protein is negatively regulated by its homologue under environmental oxidative conditions"

Abstract: Endolysosomes are key players in cell physiology, including material exchange, immunity and environmental adaptation etc. Bacterial pore-forming toxin aerolysin-like proteins (ALPs) are widely distributed in animals and plants. βγ-CAT is a complex of an ALP (BmALP1) and a trefoil factor (BmTFF3) in the frog Bombina maxima. It is the first example that a secreted endogenous pore-forming protein modulates the biochemical properties of endolysosomes via pore formation in these vesicles. Here, we report the identification of BmALP3, a homologue of BmALP1 that lacks membrane pore formation capacity. Both BmALP3 and BmALP1 contain a conserved cysteine in their C-terminal regions. BmALP3 was readily oxidized to disulfide bond linked homodimer, and the homodimer could then oxidize BmALP1 via disulfide bond exchange, resulting in the dissociation of βγ-CAT subunits and elimination of its biological activity. Consistent with its behavior in vitro, BmALP3 senses environmental oxygen tension in vivo, leading to modulation of βγ-CAT activity. Interestingly, this C-terminal cysteine site is well conserved in numerous vertebrate ALPs. These findings, for the first time, uncovered the existence of a regulatory ALP (BmALP3) and its modulating action on a cell executive ALP (BmALP1) in a redox-dependent manner, which is completely different from that of bacterial toxin aerolysins.

Data from: Extremely widespread parthenogenesis and a trade-off between alternative forms of reproduction in mayflies (Ephemeroptera)

Studying alternative forms of reproduction in natural populations is of fundamental importance for understanding the costs and benefits of sex. Mayflies are one of the few animal groups where sexual reproduction co-occurs with different types of parthenogenesis, providing ideal conditions for identifying benefits of sex in natural populations. Here, we establish a catalogue of all known mayfly species capable of reproducing by parthenogenesis, as well as species unable to do so. Overall, 1.8% of the described species reproduce parthenogenetically, which is an order of magnitude higher than reported in other animal groups. This frequency even reaches 47.8% if estimates are based on the number of studied rather than described mayfly species, as reproductive modes have thus far been studied in only 17 out of 42 families. We find that sex is a more successful strategy than parthenogenesis (associated with a higher hatching success of eggs), with a trade-off between the hatching success of parthenogenetic and sexual eggs. This means that improving the capacity for parthenogenesis may come at a cost for sexual reproduction. Such a trade-off can help explain why facultative parthenogenesis is extremely rare among animals despite its potential to combine the benefits of sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction. We argue that parthenogenesis is frequently selected in mayflies in spite of this probable trade-off because their typically low dispersal ability and short and fragile adult life may frequently generate situations of mate limitation in females. Mayflies are currently clearly underappreciated for understanding the benefits of sex under natural conditions.

Data from: Treefrogs exploit temporal coherence to form perceptual objects of communication signals

For many animals, navigating their environment requires an ability to organize continuous streams of sensory input into discrete "perceptual objects" that correspond to physical entities in visual and auditory scenes. The human visual and auditory systems follow several Gestalt laws of perceptual organization to bind constituent features into coherent perceptual objects. A largely unexplored question is whether nonhuman animals follow similar Gestalt laws in perceiving behaviorally relevant stimuli, such as communication signals. We used females of Cope's gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) to test the hypothesis that temporal coherence – a powerful Gestalt principle in human auditory scene analysis – promotes perceptual binding in forming auditory objects of species-typical vocalizations. According to the principle of temporal coherence, sound elements that start and stop at the same time or that modulate coherently over time are likely to become bound together into the same auditory object. We found that the natural temporal coherence between two spectral components of advertisement calls promotes their perceptual binding into auditory objects of advertisement calls. Our findings confirm the broad ecological validity of temporal coherence as a Gestalt law of auditory perceptual organization guiding the formation of biologically relevant perceptual objects in animal behavior.
