Small mammals are important in forested ecosystems: they are key predators on seeds and invertebrates, provide food for larger predators and act as disease vectors. The objective of this study was to document small mammal abundance and population changes in managed and unmanaged forests of Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF). Seven sites were sampled from 1981-1996. Fifty traps per site (250 total) were deployed for 4 nights and checked in the mornings. All captured small mammals were identified, sexed, weighed, and measured for reproductive condition, tagged, and brought into the lab for processing. Females with embryos or placental scars were noted in the lab. Over a five-year period, 671 deer mice; 261 woodland jumping mice, 594 southern redbacked voles, 248 short-tailed shrews, 373 masked shrews, 75 smoky shrews and small numbers of other species were captured and sexed/aged. According to Prachar and Sage (1988), weights of deer mice, redbacked voles, woodland jumping mice, short-tailed shrews, masked shrews and smoky shrews differed among years and age classes for 1983-1987. Weights differed between sexes for mice and voles but not shrews. Placental scar/embryo counts of mice and voles did not differ among years, habitats, mammal age classes or sexes. Reproductive rates of shrews exhibited patterns of fluctuation from 1983-1987.

Study objectives were to (1) Document long-term trends in relative abundance and diversity of breeding forest birds (songbirds) in forest stands with different harvest histories and (2) Identify bird species that can be used as indicators of habitat change or degradation. Declines in neotropical migrants have been linked to changes in habitat quantity and quality across species' range. Songbirds that nest and forage in different habitat types or at different heights in the forest canopy may not be affected equally by forest change or management. We detected breeding songbirds using point-counts at Huntington Wildlife Forest (HWF) in the central Adirondack Mountains of New York during 1983-2000 and modeled on an original songbird point count dataset from Webb et al. (1977). Relative abundance (RA, the number of individual birds/count) was measured in sites with differing management histories, from an unmanaged >300-year-old stand to a stand cut with the shelterwood/overstory removal method just prior to sampling in 1983). Over eighty bird species were detected during the study duration. Songbird ecology and habitat characteristics can be used to understand long-term changes in relative abundance as related to forest change.
Assessing the use of bison for savanna restoration at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve: Oak sapling growth
Oak savanna is the most threatened ecosystem in Minnesota and fire, alone, is not restoring and preserving it. Our savanna restoration research started more than a half century ago in what had once been native savanna at Cedar Creek. It has shown that burning about 4 to 7 times per decade eliminates shrubs and non-savanna tree species and restores prairie grassland species. However, our 50 years of research is also showing that these frequent and intense fires are preventing oaks from regenerating. Bison are now known to be a keystone species for restoring and preserving grasslands, but their roles in savanna ecosystems remain unknown. In grasslands, bison preferentially graze the dominant warm season grasses that would otherwise outcompete wildflowers, thereby promoting plant coexistence and enhancing plant diversity. Here we propose to test whether bison grazing might promote the growth and survivorship of oak seedlings in burned savannas by reducing grass fuel for fires and by knocking back dominant grass competitors. We will maintain the existing fire frequencies and the design of the long-term burning experiment, while adding bison grazing as an additional factor in part of several burn units on the southeast side of the property. Bison will graze during the summer and early fall seasons. Grazing exclosures will be established, and oak seedlings will be planted, to test effects of bison grazing on early oak growth and survivorship. The outcomes we plan to achieve are to: (1) discover better restoration and preservation practices for savanna ecosystems; (2) determine how these practices impact savanna biodiversity; and (3) educate Minnesotans about the ecological heritage of their state, including the roles that bison, fire and biodiversity play in the functioning of savannas and other Minnesota ecosystems. Open Science Policies in Europe v5, 2020 Dataset (v1.0)
<p>This dataset is a characterisation of European national Open Science policies as of January 2020. The data was analysed for An Analysis of Open Science Policies in Europe v5, 2020 available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3689450. </p> <p>The policy used the FAIRsFAIR policy characterisation elements to analyse the policies. The set of characterisation elements were developed in 2019 and used to characterise a selection of data policies from publishers, funding bodies and higher education institutions (HEIs). Both the elements and the resulting dataset are available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3550544.</p>
Distributed Science Infrastructure Projects
<p>This data set lists 43 projects and additional information in the field of distributed<br> science infrastructure. A basic list of project names and URLs was initially collected at the <em>Scientific Publishing on the Blockchain</em> unconference in 2018 in the hackpad on <a href="https://hackmd.io/QTaG8S3LQAeBfnCT-EFFfQ">https://hackmd.io/QTaG8S3LQAeBfnCT-EFFfQ</a> . We visited the websites during September and October 2019 and manually extracted links to source code, whitepapers and prototypes. Additionally, we added information like project descriptions, license information and social media accounts. Two more projects related to distributed computation were added in February 2020, during the review process of a data report on this data set.</p> <p>The classification of the projects is based on manual labelling by us. "active in 2019" refers to any obvious non-automatic activity on the website, in a source code repository or social media accounts. Due to the manual information extraction, we expect mistakes or missing data in all fields. Citizen Science in the Social Sciences and Humanities
<p>The aim of the study was to develop a more integrated understanding of the extent and ways the social sciences and humanities (SSH) are represented and dealt with in current citizen science (CS) practice. To achieve this, a meta-synthesis methodology was adopted to identify and examine all related cases reported in the research literature. </p> <p>Five research questions were formulated as follows:</p> <p>1) What methodological approaches and roles of citizens are used by CS projects and activities claiming to pertain to SSH?</p> <p>2) What disciplinary fields within SSH do these CS projects encompass and what do diverse interdisciplinary synergies piece together?</p> <p>3) What are the SSH topics that have engrossed or attracted most of the interest in CS practice so far?</p> <p>4) What purposes are defined to incorporate SSH in CS projects? and</p> <p>5) What are the benefits of citizen-generated data? </p> <p>To select relevant papers two of the largest databases were opted: a) Clarivate Analytics Core Collection (Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Science Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Conference Proceeding Citation Index - Science Edition & Social Science & Humanities Edition), and b) EBSCOhost research databases.</p> <p>A combination of two keywords only was used as subject terms/topics (e.g. citizen science AND social sciences > TS=(citizen AND science) AND TS=(natural AND sciences)).</p> <p>Search results were retrieved twice, in October 2018 and in January 2019. At the pre-identification stage, 2763 records were retrieved. At the identification stage, 1244 full-text papers were included in the sample. At the screening stage, 344 full-text papers in English, Spanish and French were identified and submitted to a preliminary meta-synthesis. In total, 62 papers were selected for being relevant and providing most of the data needed.</p>
