Dynamic weakening in sandstone-derived fault gouges during simulated small-magnitude earthquakes under variable loading and environmental conditions

<p><span>Faults exhibit dynamic weakening during large displacements (&gt;1 m) at seismic slip velocities (&gt;0.1 m/s), but the role of this weakening in small-displacement induced earthquakes (M 3&ndash;4), such as those in the Groningen Gas Field (the Netherlands), remains unclear. We conducted seismic slip-pulse experiments on Slochteren sandstone gouges (SSG) using a rotary-shear apparatus to investigate their dynamic behavior. Pre-sheared gouge layers, confined between ~1.5 mm thick sandstone host blocks, were subjected to slip pulses at initial effective normal stresses of 4.9&ndash;16.6 MPa and pore fluid pressures of 0.1 and 1 MPa under undrained conditions. Slip pulses reached peak velocities of 1.8 m/s, accelerations up to 42 m/s&sup2;, and displacements of 7.5&ndash;15 cm, using either dry Argon or water as pore fluid at ambient temperatures. Water-saturated gouges showed rapid weakening from a peak friction of ~0.7 to ~0.3, with early dilatancy followed by slower ongoing dilation. In contrast, Argon-filled samples exhibited only subtle weakening. Our findings confirm that water-saturated SSG weakens substantially during slip, with minimal dependence on normal stress, slip acceleration, or displacement, while dry samples do not. Microstructural analysis indicates no systematic relationship between PSZ width and frictional work or power input densities, suggesting that wear or heat production alone does not govern PSZ growth. Instead, thermal pore fluid pressurization, potentially involving water phase transitions at asperity scales, may drive weakening in short-displacement, induced seismic events.</span></p>

SNP analyses reveal a diverse pool of potential colonists to earthquake‐uplifted coastlines

<p>In species that form dense populations, major disturbance events are expected to increase the chance of establishment for immigrant lineages. Real-time tests of the impact of disturbance on patterns of genetic structure are, however, scarce. Central to testing these concepts is determining the pool of potential immigrants dispersing into a disturbed area. In 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on the South Island of New Zealand. Affecting approximately 100 km of coastline, this quake caused extensive uplift (several metres high), extirpating many intertidal populations, including keystone intertidal kelp species. Following the uplift, we set out to determine the geographic origins of detached kelp specimens which rafted into the disturbed zone. Specifically, we used genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approaches to compare beach-cast southern bull-kelp (Durvillea antarctica and D. poha) samples to established populations throughout the species' ranges, and thus infer the geographic origins of potential colonists reaching the disturbed coast. Our findings reveal an ongoing supply of diverse lineages dispersing to the newly uplifted coastline, suggesting potential for establishment of 'exotic' lineages following disturbance. Furthermore, we found that some drifting individuals of each species came from far-distant regions, some &gt;1200 km away. These results show that diverse lineages – in many cases from very distant sources – have potential to compete for new space in the wake of an exceptional disturbance event, illustrating the potential of long-distance dispersal as a key mechanism for re-assembly of coastal ecosystems. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that high-resolution genomic baselines can be used to robustly assign the provenance of dispersing individuals.</p>

Data from: Global induced stress field from large earthquakes since 1900 and chained earthquake occurrence

<p>Great earthquakes produce significant damages over large areas. The timely identification of impending earthquakes is crucial for seismic hazard mitigation. We assess the stress induced from neighboring earthquakes for 120 years around the circum-Pacific plate boundaries. Large earthquakes perturbed the stress fields. We analyze 1,636 earthquakes with moment magnitudes greater than or equal to 6.4 in 1900-2020. The cumulative Coulomb stress changes reach up to the order of tens to hundreds of bar at the plate boundaries. Large earthquakes followed in the regions with large lateral gradients of cumulative Coulomb stress changes induced by precedent earthquakes. Laterally heterogeneous stress fields may play an important role in nucleation of great earthquakes.</p>

The 6 February 2023 M7.8 & M7.6 earthquake ruptures mapped with InSAR

<p><strong>Data Supporting Text</strong></p> <p>We used C-band SAR (Sentinel-1) data in order to extract information about the ground displacements that occurred due to the M<sub>w</sub>=7.8 earthquake and M<sub>w</sub>=7.6 earthquake in southeast Turkey (T&uuml;rkiye). We retrieved the satellite data from the Alaska Satellite facility and from the Copernicus Hub of ESA. We used differential SAR (DInSAR) and the sub-pixel correlation methods to retrieve the surface motions in LOS direction and in azimuth (along satellite track) direction. We processed the SAR images using the (ISCE) v2 software and we applied pixel offset tracking through the cross correlation of the amplitude of the primary (before the earthquake) and the secondary (after the earthquake) SLC images. The pixel offset method gave us the capability to map the surface rupture extent of the strike-slip fault segments along the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) and the S&uuml;rg&uuml; fault (SF). Also, we identified the splay fault known as Nurdağı-Pazarcık fault (NPF; Melgar et al. 2023) where the rupture process began and a second splay fault in the area of Adiyaman near the main trace of EAFZ. We mapped the total rupture length of the EAFZ which is ~ 400 km. We suggest that the maximum displacement was ~ 7 m in line of sight (LOS) direction (central area of EAFZ and SF). Also, the maximum displacement of the NPF was found ~ 1 m.
