Smell the stress: Subjective ratings of body odors reliably indicate stress levels

<p><strong><span>Background:</span></strong><span> Chemosensory signals like body odor carry information about the emotional state of individuals like fear or stress. Analysis of sweat odor could therefore deliver an easy option of assessing stress. Our aim was to examine if subjective odor ratings can reliably and validly capture characteristics of sweat odor. For this we presented odor samples of stressed individuals to na&iuml;ve participants who rated these concerning their intensity, valence, and stress. Furthermore, we compared odor rating results to well-studied physiological markers of stress that we obtained from the odor donors during the stress task.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Method:</span></strong><span> Odor donors were 30 men and 30 women who performed a standardized protocol to induce social stress while wearing axillary pads under each armpit. Additionally, we measured <span>&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;</span>cortisol in saliva, adrenaline in blood and recorded participants&rsquo; heart rate. For odor ratings, we recruited an independent sample of 40 individuals. Participants rated the odor samples using visual analog scales.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong><span> Intraclass correlations revealed a fair level of clinical significance for intensity and valence of sweat odors. Additionally, retest reliability was moderate for these two odor qualities. Ratings of stress also showed a moderate retest reliability, but the intraclass correlation was on a poor level. In further analyses we found significant relationships between all three qualities. Correlations between subjective ratings of body odors and physiological stress markers of odor donors were not significant. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Discussion: </span></strong><span>Our data show that<strong> </strong>subjective ratings of body odor qualities, in particular intensity and valence are reliable. Further research on validity is needed.</span></p>

Residual stress in steel benchmark determined by synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction

<p>The data presented is the residual stress, determined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) at DESY operated by Hereo (P07 and P61A) and neutron diffraction (ND) at ILL(SALSA). The data is for two benchmark samples having the same geometry (U shape) that can be measured by diffraction techniques and adapted to other material systems to validate RS measurements. One of them was elastically loaded while the other had stresses generated by plastic deformation, while having the same geometry.&nbsp;</p> <p>The U-flexure sample flexure-compression(FC), flexure-tension(FT_ and flexure-neutral(FN) were electrical discharge machine from a rolled plate. The U-bend(B) sample was obtained by three-point bending a cuboidal blank. The thicknes of the machine part is close to 10 mm and runs parallel to the z-direction. The measurement line runs from the centre of the top surface near the bend (defined at the origin) down into the bend (positive z-direction). The FN samples acted as stress-free reference for the U-flexures and a pin extracted from the bend was used for the U-bend. For the U-flexures, a finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed to account for the slight variations in loading conditions observed in the samples used for ND and SXRD. The results of the FEA model is also presented for comparison.</p> <p>The gauge volume sizes and shapes were dependent on the technique and research facility. The gauge volumes were: a) P07 &ndash; 0.2 x 0.2 x ~2.0 mm<sup>3&nbsp; </sup>(b) P61A- 0.15 x 0.15 x ~3.4 &micro;m<sup>3 </sup>(c) SALSA- 0.6 x 0.6 x 2 mm<sup>3</sup>.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Stressful city sounds: glucocorticoid responses to experimental traffic noise are environmentally dependent

A major challenge in urban ecology is to identify the environmental factors responsible for phenotypic differences between urban and rural individuals. However, the intercorrelation between the factors that characterise urban environments, combined with a lack of experimental manipulations of these factors in both urban and rural areas, hinder efforts to identify which aspects of urban environments are responsible for phenotypic differences. Among the factors modified by urbanisation, anthropogenic sound, particularly traffic noise, is especially detrimental to animals. The mechanisms by which anthropogenic sound affects animals are unclear, but one potential mechanism is through changes in glucocorticoid hormone levels. We exposed adult house wrens, Troglodytes aedon, to either traffic noise or pink noise. We found that urban wrens had higher initial (pre-restraint) corticosterone than rural wrens before treatment, and that traffic noise elevated initial corticosterone of rural, but not urban, wrens. By contrast, restraint stress-induced corticosterone was not affected by noise treatment. Our results indicate that traffic noise specifically contributes to determining the glucocorticoid phenotype, and suggest that glucocorticoids are a mechanism by which anthropogenic sound causes phenotypic differences between urban and rural animals.

Stress amelioration response of glycine betaine and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in sorghum under Cr toxicity

<p>In search of the solution to Cr toxicity a two-year pot experiment (completely randomized design with three replications), in three genetically different varieties of sorghum (SSG 59-3, HJ 513 and HJ 541) under Cr toxicity (2 and 4 ppm) was conducted to determine the effect of glycine betaine (50 and 100mM) and <i>Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi</i> (AMF) on the antioxidant system (enzymes <i>viz.</i> superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase and metabolites <i>viz.</i> glutathione, ascorbate, proline, β-carotene) along with Cr accumulation and indices of oxidative stress parameters (polyphenol oxidase, hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde) at two growth stages (vegetative and grain filling). According to results; Cr stress (2 &amp; 4 ppm) increased its accumulation and indices of oxidative stresses significantly (<i>p≤0.05</i>) in all varieties of sorghum at both growth stages. However, soil application of glycine betaine (GB) and AMF decreased Cr accumulation and indices of oxidative stress by increasing antioxidant enzymes and metabolites activities at both growth stages in all varieties. The combination of 100mM GB with AMF was observed most significant (<i>p≤0.05</i>) in decreasing oxidative stress and improved the antioxidant system's activities. The SSG 59-3 cultivar showed the lowest Cr accumulation indices of oxidative stress and highest antioxidant system's activity among these three cultivars at both growth stages. Thus, SSG 59-3 was found most tolerant cultivars followed by HJ 513 and then HJ 541. These findings suggest that both GB and AMF, either individually or combined can play a positive role to reduce oxidative stress and increased antioxidant attributes under Cr toxicity in sorghum.</p>

Interactive effects of ZnO nanoparticles and temperature on molecular and cellular stress responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis

<p>We investigate the molecular and cellular stress responses of tissues (gills and digestive glands) in the mussels <em>Mytilus edulis&nbsp;</em>exposed for 21 days to either ambient (10 &deg;C in winter and 15 &deg;C in summer) or elevated (by 5 &deg;C) temperature combined with different concentrations (0, 10, 100 &micro;g l<sup>-1</sup>) of ZnO nanoparticles or dissolved zinc. Data from: Genome-wide variation in DNA methylation is associated with stress resilience and plumage brightness in a wild bird

Individuals often differ in their ability to cope with challenging environmental and social conditions. Evidence from model systems suggests that patterns of DNA methylation are associated with variation in coping ability. These associations could arise directly if methylation plays a role in controlling the physiological response to stressors by, among other things, regulating the release of glucocorticoids in response to challenges. Alternatively, the association could arise indirectly if methylation and resilience have a common cause, such as early life conditions. In either case, methylation might act as a biomarker for coping ability. At present, however, relatively little is known about whether variation in methylation is associated with organismal performance and resilience under natural conditions. We studied genome-wide patterns of DNA methylation in free-living female tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) using methylated DNA immunoprecipitation (MeDIP) and a tree swallow genome that was assembled for this study. We identified areas of the genome that were differentially methylated with respect to social signal expression (breast brightness) and physiological traits (ability to terminate the glucocorticoid stress response through negative feedback). We also asked whether methylation predicted resilience to a subsequent experimentally imposed challenge. Individuals with brighter breast plumage and higher stress resilience had lower methylation at differentially methylated regions across the genome. Thus, widespread differences in methylation predicted both social signal expression and the response to future challenges under natural conditions. These results have implications for predicting individual differences in resilience, and for understanding the mechanistic basis of resilience and its environmental and social mediators.
