The influence of the Er3+ dopant concentration in LaPO4:Nd3+, Er3+ on thermometric properties of ratiometric and kinetic-based luminescent thermometers operating in NIR II and NIR III optical windows
<p>In this work, properties of the near infrared absorbing and near infrared emitting Er<sup>3+</sup> and Nd<sup>3+</sup> co-doped LaPO<sub>4</sub> nanocrystals luminescent thermometer were investigated by exploiting luminescence spectra ratiometric and luminescence lifetime. The unique configuration of the energy levels of Nd<sup>3+</sup> and Er<sup>3+</sup> ions and the energy transfer between them requires temperature dependent phonon assistance. Since, the probability of this process is dependent on the distance between interacting ions, the thermometric parameters of luminescent thermometers were investigated as a function of Er<sup>3+</sup> dopant concentration. Strong susceptibility of its probability to temperature changes enables to quantify temperature with relative sensitivity as high as S<sub>R</sub> = 1.15%/K for LaPO<sub>4</sub>:1%Nd<sup>3+</sup>, 20%Er<sup>3+</sup> nanocrystals in the ratiometric approach and S<sub>R</sub> = 2.3%/K at 600 K for LaPO<sub>4</sub>:1%Nd<sup>3+</sup>, 5%Er<sup>3+</sup> in the luminescence lifetime based mode. The obtained results confirm the high applicative potential of this phosphor for remote temperature measurements.</p> <ul> </ul>

Soil property, microbial abundance, and plant and invertebrate biomass data across a natural soil temperature gradient in Iceland from August 2018
<p><span>This is a dataset of soil physiochemical properties, bacterial and fungal abundance, and above and belowground plant and invertebrate biomass, sampled at 40 plots in the Hengill geothermal valley, Iceland, from 15<sup>th</sup> to 22<sup>nd</sup> August 2018. The plots span a temperature gradient of 10</span><span>-35 °C over the sampling period, and this temperature gradient is consistent over time. The dataset also includes data on the decomposition rate of soil organic matter, which was sampled at 60 plots in the Hengill valley from May to July 2015.</span></p>

Astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis prevents high-fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis and oxidative stress in mice by gut-liver axis modulating properties
<p><strong><span>Scope:</span></strong><span> Evidence is mounting that astaxanthin (ATX), a xanthophyll carotenoid, used as a nutritional supplement to prevent chronic metabolic diseases. The present study aims to identify the potential function of ATX supplementation in preventing steatohepatitis and hepatic oxidative stress in diet-induced obese mice.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods and Results:</span></strong><span> In this study, ATX as dose of 0.25%, 0.5% and 0.75% have orally administered to mice along with a high-fat diet (HFD) to investigate the role of ATX in regulating liver lipid metabolism and gut microbiota. The study showed that ATX dose-dependently reduces body weight, lipid droplet formation, hepatic triglycerides and ameliorated hepatic steatosis and oxidative stress. 0.75% ATX altered the levels of 34 lipid metabolites related to hepatic cholesterol and fatty acid metabolism which might be associated with downregulation of lipogenesis-related genes and upregulation of bile acid biosynthesis-related genes. The result also revealed that ATX alleviates HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis by significantly inhibiting the growth of obesity-related <em>Parabacteroides</em> and <em>Desulfovibrio</em> while promoting the growth of <em>Allobaculum</em> and <em>Akkermansia</em>. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The study results suggested that dietary ATX may prevent the development of hepatic steatosis and oxidative stress with the risk of metabolic disease by gut-liver axis modulating properties.</span></p>
Effectiveness of Softening Agents for Enhancing Properties of Asphalt Mixes with High RAP Contents
<p>A high percentage of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in new asphalt concrete can lead to developing premature failure of asphalt pavements due to fatigue or low-temperature cracking. The use of softening agents in asphalt binders can resolve these problems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of softening agents for enhancing the properties of asphalt mixes with high RAP contents. Two waste products, namely, waste cooking oil (WCO), and engine bottom oil (EBO) along with a commercially produced rejuvenator were investigated in this study. The following three types of Performance Grade (PG) binders, each collected from two different sources, were considered in this study: PG 64-22, PG 70-22, and PG 76-22. These PG binders blended with different amounts (0, 15, 25, 40, and 60%) of RAP binders were rejuvenated with different dosages (0, 10, 15, and 20%) of the selected softening agents. Empirical tests (e.g., penetration and pH), Superpave tests, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and limited laboratory and field performance of asphalt mixture samples were also evaluated. It was found that the rejuvenators reduced the viscosity of the binder samples. The results showed that the rejuvenated binders reduce the production temperatures as well as the brittleness of the hard binders. The AFM results showed that modulus and deformation values of rejuvenated binders were significantly less than those of their unrejuvenated counterparts. Similarly, distinct peaks were observed in the FTIR peaks due to the rejuvenation. The findings of this study will help pavement professionals in selecting suitable rejuvenators in the construction of pavements with high RAP contents.</p>

Data from: Variations in bark structural properties affect both water loss and carbon economics in neotropical savanna trees in the Cerrado region of Brazil
<p><span>Even after complete stomatal closure, plants lose water through the leaf cuticles and bark. This residual water conductance of leaves (g<sub>leaf-res</sub>) and stems (g<sub>bark</sub>) can negatively impact plant water balance and affect plant survival in seasonally dry environments. However, little is known about the costs and benefits associated with such water leaks, especially on stem level. </span></p> <p><span>Here, we characterized the structural and functional determinants of the variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across tropical savanna species to elucidate how variations in this trait are related to contrasting growth strategies. </span></p> <p><span>The high variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across species was associated with morphoantomical properties of the outer bark (thickness, density, and lenticel investment), and such characteristics influenced both stem transpiration and respiration, suggesting the existence of a trade-off between water conservation and oxygen permeability, which reflected contrasting growth and dehydration tolerance strategies</span><span>. For instance, species with higher g<sub>bark</sub> and g<sub>leaf-res</sub> presented a fast resource acquisition strategy but were more prone to drought-induced mortality by hydraulic failure. However, model simulations revealed that the relative contribution of g<sub>leaf-res</sub> and g<sub>bark</sub> to overall water balance depended on whether leaves were less or more resistant to cavitation than the stems. </span></p> <p><span>Synthesis. By combining correlative studies, experimental results, and a modeling exercise, we provide a new understanding of the costs and benefits associated with the variability in g<sub>bark</sub> across tropical savanna species, and a new perspective for studies of water relations and carbon economics in species from a hyperdiverse savanna. </span></p>
An in situ observation dataset of soil hydraulic properties and soil moisture in a high and cold mountainous area on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
<p>Based on soil profile data at depths of 5 cm and 25 cm from 238 sampling sites, and on soil data from 32 soil moisture monitoring stations at depths of 5 cm, 15 cm, 25 cm, 40 cm, and 60 cm, we have compiled a soil hydraulic properties and soil moisture dataset for a high and cold mountainous area, Northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Specifically, the soil hydraulic properties include clay, silt, sand, soil organic carbon, soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil water retention curve parameters (Van Genuchten model) and soil dry bulk density.</p>

Decomposition, topology, properties, and graphs of 10 tree species of Caatinga vegetations
<p>Data were obtained from the observation of ten individuals from ten species growing in a semiarid area of Caatinga vegetation under natural conditions in the Northeast of Brazil in Paraiba State, located at the Fazenda Pocinho (7º29'46" S, 35º58'12" W) in the municipality of Barra de Santana, Brazil. The woody crowns were drawn (skeletonized) in the 2-D format as rooted trees resulting in networks with nodes and connectors following the methodology described by Prado et al. (2020, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2020.110318). Skeletonized crowns capture the data of decomposition, topology, and properties.</p>
