Data for: Long-term changes in habitat selection and prey spectrum in a reintroduced Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) population in Switzerland
<p>When wild-caught Euan lynx (Lynx lynx) from the Slovak Carpathian Mountains were reintroduced to Central Switzerland in the early 1970s and spread through the north western Swiss Alps (NWA), they faced a largely unfamiliar landscape with strongly fragmented forests, high elevations and intense human land use. For more than 30 years, radiocollared lynx have been monitored during three different project periods (in the 1980s, 1990s and 2010s). Our study explored, how lynx over generations have learned to adjust to the alpine environment. We predicted that (1) lynx nowadays select more strongly for open habitats, higher elevations and steep slopes compared to the early stages of recolonization and that (2) consequently, there were significant changes in the Eurasian lynx' prey spectrum. To test our predictions, we analysed telemetry data (VHF, GPS) of 13 adult resident lynx in the NWA over 35 years, using Resource Selection Functions. Furthermore, we compared kills recorded from different individuals inhabiting the same region during three project periods. In general, lynx preferred forested areas, but over the years, they avoided open habitat less. Compared to the early stage of the recolonization, lynx in the most recent project period selected for higher elevations and the proportion of chamois in their prey spectrum surmounted that of roe deer. Potential driving factors for the observed changes could be increasing tolerance to human presence, intraspecific competition or fitness benefits through exploitation of new resources. Long-term studies like ours provide important insight into how animals can respond to sudden environmental changes e.g., in the course of translocations into new areas or anthropogenic alterations of their habitats.</p>

GPM Ground Validation NASA EPFL-LTE Parsivel DSD Data Lausanne, Switzerland
The GPM Ground Validation NASA EPFL-LTE Parsivel DSD Data Lausanne, Switzerland dataset consists of a network of 16 Parsivel disdrometers deployed on the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) campus in Lausanne, Switzerland for about 16 months from March 2009 to July 2010. The distribution of the disdrometers was to cover a typical operational radar pixel (about 1x1 km2). Since all the stations were not deployed at the same time, additional data are available from November 2008 to September 2010. The dataset also consists of a list of precipitation events that occurred throughout the study period. There are two types of data, raw data and filtered volumic drop size distribution data. These data are in ASCII (.dat, .txt) format that are compressed into .gz files.
First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Cirrus 1 Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) Data over Switzerland
The First ISCCP Regional Experiment (FIRE) Cirrus 1 Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) Data over Switzerland show results from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) analysis of B3 radiance data (sampled to 25 km). Unlike the standard ISCCP product, these data are reported at the original pixel resolution and contain detailed information about the algorithm decision. Data covers the region from: 30 degrees North to 55 degrees North (+30 to +55), 40 degrees West to 40 degrees East (-40 to +40). (Polar projection covers 55S - 90S or 55N - 90N, maximum; Midlatitude maps cover 55S to 55N, maximum.) The nominal spatial resolution is 25 km for the spatially sampled imaging data. The pixel field of view is 4 km (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data). Earth location (latitude +/- 90 degrees, longitude +/- 180 degrees) is obtained for each pixel from ancillary data.

CoMix social contact data for Switzerland (2021-2022)
<p><a href="https://www.uhasselt.be/en/aparte-sites-partner-en/epipose/the-comix-study">CoMix</a> is a social contact survey that followed households across Europe throughout the COVID-19 pandemic (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-021-02133-y">Verelst et al., 2021</a>). In Switzerland, we conducted a total of 24 survey waves from 22 January 2021 to 19 May 2022. The market research company Ipsos MORI recruited a nationally representative sample of study participants using quota sampling based on age, gender, region, and work status through a combination of social media, web advertising, and email campaigns. The survey included adults aged 18 or above and parents (at least 18 years old) who completed the surveys on behalf of their children (<18 years old). For parents, quotas were set on region only. </p><p>Participants reported their social contacts made on the day prior to survey participation. A contact was defined as anyone who met the participant in person with whom at least a few words were exchanged or physical contact was made. The design of the survey is largely based on the POLYMOD study (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmed.0050074">Mossong et al., 2008</a>). Further details about the study design and methodology have been published elsewhere (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s12916-021-02133-y">Verelst et al., 2021</a>; <a href="https://doi.org/10.1186/s12879-023-08214-y">Wong et al., 2022</a>).</p>
