Exploring Immersive Virtual Reality in Higher Education: Research Gap and future Direction - A Scoping review

The rapid advancement of technology in the post-COVID-19 era has positioned immersive learning as a transformative approach to enhance educational experiences. Despite its vast potential, recent research developments reveal persistent challenges and gaps that impede widespread adoption. This study conducts a scoping review using the PRISMA methodology to systematically analyze current literature, identify research gaps, seek the challenge, and propose future research directions. From an initial pool of 414 papers, 75 were selected, comprising 60 research studies and 15 review papers. Notably, 55 studies focus on immersive virtual reality (IVR) purely for educational enhancement in traditional academic settings, while 20 explore the implementation of IVR in education with gaming activities. The analysis indicates a predominance of mixed-methods research within education, computer engineering, and computer science. Most studies are limited by short durations (typically 30 minutes) and small participant groups (under 50), raising concerns about the generalizability of findings. Key themes identified include learning context (21 papers), learning design strategies (10 papers), and immersion elements such as avatars and haptic feedback (6 papers). While positive impacts like increased satisfaction, motivation, engagement, knowledge enhancement, and usability are reported, negative effects such as motion sickness (13 papers) and dizziness (11 papers) persist. Crucially, only 11 studies exhibit high statistical power, underscoring the need for more robust research designs. Challenges identified encompass participant limitations, homogeneity, user discomfort, hardware unfamiliarity, and cognitive load—all intricately linked to design strategies. The implications of this review highlight the necessity for future research to focus on long-term studies, optimize user experience, develop cost-effective content creation methods, and integrate gamification into learning design. Addressing these areas is essential for overcoming current barriers and fully realizing the potential of immersive learning in education.

Going to School at Better Schools can Improve Children's Health: The Health benefits of the 2009 Right to Education Act in India

This work demonstrates the unintended benefits to health that can result from school policy. We evaluate the impact of a large education reform (Right to Education Act, 2009) in India on children’s health, measured as height-for-age z-scores. Using data from the India Human Development Surveys, we employ a difference-in-differences approach that exploits differential timing in the adoption of the reform across states. We find positive health effects due to the reform with larger impacts in states that adopted it earlier. The benefits do not differ across boys and girls but is larger for children from lower castes, and those who live farther from school. Our findings are robust to multiple robustness checks, including a regression discontinuity design that uses children’s birth-year as a source of variation for their potential exposure to the mandates of the Right to Education Act.

Locally adapting generic rubrics for the implementation of outcome-based medical education: A mixed-methods approach

Background

Rubrics are frequently used to assess competencies in outcome-based education (OBE). The implementation of assessment systems using rubrics is usually realised through years of involvement in projects with various stakeholders. However, for countries or specialities new to OBE, faster and more simplified processes are required. In March 2019, Japan introduced nine competencies and generic rubrics of competencies for medical residents. We explored the local adaptation of these generic rubrics and its consequences for assessors.

Results

A locally adapted assessment system was developed and implemented in seven months. The scores of the generic rubrics and the adapted assessment tool completed by the supervising doctors showed good correlations in some items as opposed to others, assessed mainly with other tools. Participant interviews revealed that local adaptation decreased their cognitive load leading to consistent ratings, increased writing of comments, and promoting reflection on instruction.

Conclusions

This adaptation process is a feasible way to begin the implementation of OBE. Local adaptation has advantages over direct use of generic rubrics.

Shark captures near west-central Florida by Coastal Marine Education and Research Academy

Identifying critical habitat for highly mobile species such as sharks is difficult, but essential for effective management and conservation. In regions where baseline data are lacking, non-traditional data sources have the potential to increase observational capacity for species distribution and habitat studies. In this study, a research and education organization conducted a five year (2013-2018) survey of shark populations in the coastal waters of west-central Florida, an area where a diverse shark assemblage has been observed but no formal population analyses have been conducted. The objectives of this study were to use Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) modeling to quantify environmental factors impacting the distribution of the shark assemblage, create species distribution maps from the model outputs, and identify spatially explicit hot spots of high shark abundance. A total of 1,036 sharks were captured, encompassing eleven species. Abundance hot spots for four species and for immature sharks (collectively) were most often located in areas designated as "No Internal Combustion Engine" zones and seagrass bottom cover, suggesting these environments may be fostering more diverse and abundant populations. The BRT models were fitted for immature sharks and five species where n>100: the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), blacktip shark (Carcharhinus limbatus), blacknose shark (C. acronotus), Atlantic sharpnose shark (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae), and bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo). Capture data were paired with environmental variables: depth (m), sea surface temperature (ºC), surface, middle, and bottom salinity (psu), dissolved oxygen (mg/l), and bottom type (seagrass, artificial reef, or sand). Depth, temperature, and bottom type were most frequently identified as predictors with the greatest marginal effect on shark distribution, underscoring the importance of nearshore seagrass and barrier island habitats to the shark assemblage in this region. This approach demonstrates the potential contribution of unconventional science to effective management and conservation of coastal sharks.

Policies of educational journals regarding deposit in repositories

Science, as a knowledge-building enterprise, relies heavily on the communication of findings through scientific publications. Collaboration among researchers drives scientific progress, and open access, coupled with technological advancements, brings knowledge closer to society. At the global and national levels, measures are being implemented to promote data sharing, although differences persist between fields of knowledge, such as education, where there is a lack of evidence on sharing practices.

An analysis of the policies of 60 international education journals regarding data deposition reveals a variety of approaches and levels of specificity While progress has been made, this disparity suggests the need for standardization and clarity. The lack of incentives and specialized resources also hinders information sharing in education. Progress towards transparency and accessibility in educational research is evident, but a greater commitment from the scientific community is required to promote effective data management practices.

Conformity of E-Learning for Teaching and Learning in Ethiopian Higher Education: Analysis on User-Friendliness of E-Resources

The study investigated the practicability of e-learning for teaching and learning in Ethiopian higher education in terms of availability, clarity, accessibility in terms of accommodation and economy. The research looked into the roles of e-provisions based on the country’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education policy guidelines as benchmark. Descriptive survey research design was used in the research since the study focused on indicating status than in-depth institution-based analysis of technology-use in education. Two higher institutions were selected for their relative proximity and viability for data collection. Data for the research were collected from 150 students, 4 technical support renderers and 30 teachers. Instruments of data collection were binary mode questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicated shortage in a purpose-orientation, weak cross-institutional interchange and low mainstreaming of e-resources for course-provision. Though initiatives were high to use e-resources across lessons, shortage in internet access and prevailing digital divides were common barriers. Selective use of e-learning was witnessed on the part of technical support providers. multiplier effects in sharing experiences were not practiced among the teachers. Purpose-conformity was met on highly individualized bases. inter-institutional experiential exchange was insufficient though there was high emphasis on supporting selected instructional strings.
