The purpose for the long term study of the population dynamics of fish, shrimp, and crab in the North Inlet estuary are: 1) to discover the abundance, distribution and life history patterns of these organisms which occur in this area; 2) to maintain long-term population information so it can be used to compare with future short-term fish population studies proposed by investigators from USC and other universities, as well as investigators at the Baruch Laboratory; and 3) to relate this population information to the population dynamics of zooplankton, epibenthos, benthic macrofaua, and meiofauna.

This data package consists of Zooplankton Data for North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, from 1981 to 1992, North Inlet LTER. The purpose of the long term monitoring of zooplankton was to characterize the fauna in the water column larger than or equal to 153 microns and to obtain some basic information on each of the taxa encountered there. A sampling regime of collections made at regular biweekly intervals was implemented to provide the best quantitative assessment of long term changes in the zooplankton population dynamics.

The original purpose of this research was to determine if natural meiobenthic assemblages exhibited continuity over time and to monitor several physical variables to determine if these influenced long-term temporal patterns. The most recent study focused on variation and the relations of meiobenthos abundance with environmental factors over 11 years. Typically marine benthic community studies are limited temporally and the majority of previously published 'longterm' meiofauna results (all taxa) were based on about a year's duration.

This data package consists of Macrobenthos Sampling Data for North Inlet Stations Bread and Butter Creek from 1981 to 1992, and Debidue Creek from 1981 to 1984, North Inlet LTER. The purpose of this study was to document the composition and abundance of macrobenthic subtidal populations over time at one mud and one sand site. Macrobenthos was defined here as those animals retained on a 0.5 mm mesh screen.
Wetland Salinity Maps of Select Estuary Sites in the United States, 2020
This dataset provides gridded average annual wetland salinity concentrations in practical salinity units (PSU) at 30-meter resolution within 24 coastal estuary sites in the United States predicted for 2020. Salinity in estuaries can serve as a proxy for sulfate concentration, which can inhibit methanogenesis. Data were derived from a hybrid approach to mapping salinity as a continuous variable using a combination of physical watershed and stream characteristics, optical remote sensing based on vegetation characteristics, and climate variables. Data are provided in cloud-optimized GeoTIFF format covering 33 Hydrologic Unit Code 8-digit (HUC8) watersheds to the extent of palustrine and estuarine wetlands as defined by NOAA's 2016 Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) Coastal Land Cover layer. Additionally, model outputs are provided in comma separated values (CSV) files, and code scripts are provided in a compressed (*.zip) file.

Water Chemistry Profiles of Milwaukee Estuary System Sites
<p>Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) can be measured in waters across the United States, including the tributaries of the Great Lakes. The extent to which these contaminants affect gene expression in aquatic wildlife is unclear. This dataset presents the full hepatic transcriptomes of laboratory reared fathead minnows (<em>Pimephales promelas</em>) caged at multiple sites within the Milwaukee Estuary area of concern and control sites. Following 4 days of in situ exposure, liver tissue was removed from males at each site for RNA extraction and sequencing, yielding a total of 116 samples from which libraries were prepared, pooled, and sequenced. For each exposure site, 179 chemical analytes were also assessed. These data were created with the intention of inviting research on possible transcriptomic changes observed in aquatic species exposed to CECs. Access to both full sequencing reads of animal samples as well as water contaminant data across multiple Great Lakes sites will allow others to explore the health of these ecosystems, in support of the aims of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.</p>
