Decomposition, topology, properties, and graphs of 14 individuals of Cenostigma pyramidale (Tul.) Gagnon & G.P. Lewis, a Caatinga tree species
<p>Data were obtained from the observation of 14 individuals of the tree species <em>Cenostigma pyramidale</em> (Tul.) Gagnon & G.P. Lewis growing in a semiarid area in Caatinga vegetation under natural conditions in the Northeast of Brazil in Paraiba State, located at the Fazenda Pocinho (7º29'46" S, 35º58'12" W) in the municipality of Barra de Santana. The woody crowns were drawn (skeletonized) in the 2-D format as rooted trees resulting in networks with nodes and connectors named woody crown networks. The data of decomposition, topology, and some properties are captured by skeletonized crowns following the methodology described by Prado et al. (2020, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2020.110318">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtbi.2020.110318</a>).</p>
Distinct decision-making properties underlying the species specificity of group formation of flies
<p>Many animal species form groups. Group characteristics differ between species, suggesting that the decision-making of individuals for grouping varies across species. However, the actual decision-making properties that lead to interspecific differences in group characteristics remain unclear. Here, we compared the group formation processes of two Drosophilinae fly species, Colocasiomyia alocasiae and Drosophila melanogaster, which form dense and sparse groups, respectively. A high-throughput tracking system revealed that C. alocasiae flies formed groups faster than D. melanogaster flies, and the probability of C. alocasiae remaining in groups was far higher than that of D. melanogaster. C. alocasiae flies joined groups even when the group size was small, whereas D. melanogaster flies joined groups only when the group size was sufficiently large. C. alocasiae flies attenuated their walking speed when the inter-individual distance between flies became small, whereas such behavioural properties were not clearly observed in D. melanogaster. Furthermore, depriving C. alocasiae flies of visual input affected grouping behaviours, resulting in a severe reduction in group formation. These findings show that C. alocasiae decision-making regarding grouping, which greatly depends on vision, is significantly different from D. melanogaster, leading to species-specific group-formation properties.</p>
Functional miscibility and thermomechanical properties enhancement of substituted phthalic acetylated modified chitin filler in biopolymer composite
<p>The miscibility between hydrophobic and hydrophilic biopolymers has been of significant challenge. This study used a novel simplified chitin modification method to produce phthalic - chitin using phthalic anhydride in a substitution reaction. The FT-IR functional group analysis was used to confirm the substitution reaction. The modified chitin was used as compatibiliser in PLA/starch biocomposite to enhance its properties. The biocomposite was prepared using melt extrusion and compression moulding technique. The biocomposite's morphological, thermomechanical, and water absorption properties were characterised using scanning electron microscope, tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetry analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thickness swelling, and water absorption test. The FT-IR study shows a successful substitution reaction of the amine hydrogen ion present in the chitin as opposed to substituting the hydrogen ion in the hydroxide group. The tensile and impact properties of biocomposite incorporated with modified chitin showed better results compared with other samples. The SEM images showed uniform miscibility of the modified biocomposite. The dynamic mechanical analysis showed improved modulus value with the incorporation of modified chitin. The thermal properties showed improved thermal stability of the modified biocomposite. Furthermore, the percentage of water absorbed by biocomposite with modified chitin is reduced compared to the PLA/starch biocomposite. The produced biodegradable ternary blend can be used as a substitute for plastics in industrial applications.</p>

Nanoindentation Dataset for the Microscale Mechanical Property of Granites
<p>This dataset contains the raw results of nanoindentation testing, which are used to determine the elastic and failure property of rock-forming minerals in granites, which then provides the input parameters for accurate grain-based modeling. The dataset is presented and utilized in the paper 'Thermally induced microcracks in granite and their effect on the macroscale mechanical behavior'. Full details of the experimental setup, procedure, and imaging analysis are able to be found in this paper.</p> <p>The results of nanoindentation testing of different rock-forming minerals by different indents are contained within six files: Berkovich_quartz, Berkovich_feldspar, Berkovich_biotite, Cube corner_quartz, Cube corner_feldspar and Cube corner_biotite. In these files, the raw data of nanoindentation testing includes elastic modulus, hardness, maximum load fore, maximum contact area, and contact depth. These results are then applied to calculate the elastic and failure properties of rock-forming minerals.</p>
GSHP: Global database of soil hydraulic properties
<p>A total of 15,259 SWCCs from 2,702 sites were assembled from published literature and other sources, standardized, and quality-checked to obtain global database of soil hydraulic properties (GSHP). The GSHP database covers most regions across the globe, with the highest number of curves from North America followed by Africa, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia/Oceania. Organic matter properties of the Rincon del Bonete and Palmar sediment cores (Uruguay)
<p>This database presents the results of organic matter measurements performed on cores collected in the Rincon del Bonete and Palmar reservoirs (Uruguay)</p> <p>IRMS analyses were conducted on dry sediment for determining organic matter properties, including elemental concentrations (Total Organic Carbon – TOC, Total Nitrogen –TN, both expressed in %) and stable isotope measurements (δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N, expressed in ‰). Impact of warmer and drier conditions on tree photosynthetic properties and the role of species interactions
<p>Increased temperature and prolonged soil moisture reduction have distinct impacts on tree photosynthetic properties. Yet, our knowledge of their combined effect is limited. Moreover, how species interactions alter photosynthetic responses to warming and moisture reduction remains unclear. </p> <p>Using mesocosms, we studied how photosynthetic properties of European beech and downy oak were impacted by multi-year warming and moisture reduction alone or combined, and how species interactions (intra- vs. interspecific interactions) modulated these effects.</p> <p>Warming of +5°C enhanced photosynthetic properties in oak but not beech, while moisture reduction decreased them in both species. Combined warming and moisture reduction reduced photosynthetic properties for both species, but no exacerbated effects were observed. Oak was less impacted by combined warming and moisture reduction when interacting with beech than in intraspecific stands. For beech, species interactions had no impact on the photosynthetic responses to warming and moisture reduction, alone or combined.</p> <p>Warming had either no or beneficial effects on the photosynthetic properties, while moisture reduction and their combined effects strongly reduced photosynthetic responses in both species. However, interspecific interactions can mitigate the negative impacts of the combined warming and moisture reduction in oak, thereby highlighting the need to deepen our understanding of interspecific interactions under climate change.</p>

Leaf enzyme plays a more important role in leaf nitrogen resorption efficiency than soil properties along an elevation gradient
<p>1. Nitrogen (N) resorption is a strategy for plant N conservation through which plants withdraw N from senescing leaves prior to litterfall and its underlying mechanisms are important for better understanding of N cycling. However, most current studies focused on the impacts of soil and leaf nutrients on leaf N resorption efficiency (NRE), and plant physiological regulation that is species-dependent is still unclear.</p> <p>2. Here, we conducted a field experiment to investigate the variations of leaf NRE along an altitudinal gradient in a temperate forest of Northeastern China.</p> <p>3. Results showed that leaf NRE of Q. mongolica and F. mandshurica increased with altitude, while leaf NRE of T. amurensis, A. mono and A. pseudosieboldianum exhibited an opposite trend, although the relationships were not significant for F. mandshurica and A. mono. The inconsistent responses of leaf NRE of different species to increasing altitude were primarily due to the effect of leaf Glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), an enzyme responsible for N translocation. Leaf GDH activity in senescing leaves explained the variation of NRE more than soil and climate factors did, suggesting that different plant species had different physiological regulation strategies for their N conservation under similar environment.</p> <p>4. Synthesis. Our study highlights the role of leaf enzyme as a pivotal regulator of leaf NRE and helps us better understand and predict N cycling under climate change in forest ecosystems.</p>
Optical properties of monolayer and multilayer 1T' WTe2 calculated by density functional theory
<p>We investigate the optical properties of monolayer, bilayer, trilayer, and quadrilayer WTe<sub>2</sub> in the 1T' crystal phase by ab-initio calculations based on spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT). We used the Vasp package to calculate the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function, the real and imaginary part of the refractive index, as well as the optical absorbance from 0 eV to 5 eV and for different crystal directions.</p>
