Organic matter and sand content for backbarrier marsh cores from Metompkin island, VA 2012
Cores collected: Summer of 2012 Organic matter and sand content for backbarrier marsh cores from Metompkin island. Cores were taken from 6 different locations in the backbarrier on the south end of Metompkin island, with varying along- and cross-shore distances. The core sites are labelled MA-MF (eg: Metompkin core A, Metompkin core B, etc.), and each has an associated set of latitude and longitude coordinates showing the location where the core was taken. Included is the data for the percent organic matter, measured at 5cm intervals in the core, via loss-on-ignition experiments. Also included is the data for the percent sand, measured at 10cm intervals in the core, using a LS 13 320 particle analyzer.
Width of back-barrier salt marshes on the coast of Virginia 2010
Backbarrier marsh widths observed from remote sensing of satellite imagery for each of the following islands: Smith, Myrtle, Ship Shoal, Wreck, Cobb, Hog, Paramore, Cedar, Metompkin, and Assawoman Islands. Backbarrier marsh is defined for the purposes of this dataset as those marshes that are connected in a straight line to the barrier island without being interrupted by open water (Open water does not include channels of widths less than 50m). ASTER satellite imagery used for this analysis was acquired from the USGS Global Visualization Viewer web portal (http://glovis.usgs.gov/) (Scene L1B_00305152004155804_2010120215, 2010). Measurements are made every 15m along shore-perpendicular transects. No measurements are made within 1,000m of island "tips" to avoid tidal inlet effects.

Model-derived backbarrier marsh width from GEOMBEST+ simulations of barrier island-marsh coupled evolution for a range of environmental conditions. The input parameters were varied for a range of 10 different values for each of the flux of overwash (.2-2 m^3/yr), the rate of sea level rise (1-10mm/yr), and the flux of bay sediment (2-20 m^3/yr) Each simulation was for a one meter change in sea level, starting from one of three initial conditions, an empty backbarrier basin, starting with a narrow (400m wide) backbarrier marsh, and starting with a marsh-filled (2000m wide) backbarrier basin. With 10 variants of each parameter input and 3 initial conditions, this results in 3,000 total simulations run. Each row in the spreadsheet contains the input and output values for an individual simulation. The outputs reported are the final backbarrier marsh width, defined as the distance from the backside of the barrier island to the landward most marsh cell, the change in marsh width, and the rate of change in marsh width.
Water level measurements on a southern Hog Island marsh, April-July 2014
Water level recorded in a backbarrier marsh on Hog Island concurrent to marsh burial experiment. HOBO Water level loggers (Model U20L-004) were placed just outside the plot at the two experimental sites in the high marsh and low marsh to record water level every 15 minutes. The loggers were suspended from steel wire at a constant elevation inside slotted PVC wells that allow water to flow through without allowing sediment infilling. Pressure measurements were then converted to water level using concurrently measured barometric data from Phillips Creek Marsh (accessible through data set: VCR12201).
Marsh vegetation burial experiment biomass data, August 2014
End of year biomass harvested from marsh vegetation burial experiment on Hog Island. Experiment was set up at two sites - one in the high marsh and one in the low marsh. Within each site, a 6x6 array of mesocosms was established with 6 replicates of 6 different burial treatments (0, 5, 10, 15, 30, and 60 centimeters). After one growing season, the biomass was clipped from the top of each mesocosm, the mesocosm and sand layer was removed, and the vegetation within the sand layer was clipped at the marsh surface. This biomass was then returned to the lab, washed, dried to a constant weight, and weighed.

Marsh widths from GEOMBEST++Seagrass simulations of barrier-marsh-bay evolution
Model-derived back-barrier widths from GEOMBEST++Seagrass simulations across a range of input conditions. Simulations are varied by relative sea-level rise (2-7 mm/yr), bay sediment flux (10-80 m^3/m/yr), and export flux (0-25%). All simulations ran until a total of 1 m of sea-level rise was reached. Each row in the spreadsheet represents a single unique set of model conditions, each of which was simulated both with and without the presence of seagrass. The outputs recorded are the final back-barrier marsh widths of simulations with seagrass and without, as well as the difference in marsh width between each corresponding seagrass and no seagrass run.
Marsh Turbidity in Mockhorn Island Marsh, VA 2017-2018
Turbidity was measured in Mockhorn Island Marsh on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Three RBR Duo sensors were used. One was located at the edge of the marsh, one 7.8 meters away from the edge station in the channel and one in the marsh interior. The calibration factor from converting between Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) and suspended sediment concentration in milligrams per liter is 1.3232. NTU*1.3232=mg/L Data was recorded every 15 minutes, but NaN was used when the sensor was not underwater (and so could not measure turbidity).
LiDAR-estimated Marsh Edge Morphology on the Coast of Virginia 2015
Retreat metrics were analyzed between 2002 and 2015, utilizing a LiDAR derived edge for the year 2015 from points of maximum slope and aerial imagery pre-2015. We examined this within the context of oyster reef restoration within the shallow coastal bays of Virginia, USA by comparing retreat and morphology quantified at paired reef-lined and control marsh edges at ten different marsh sites. A table of statistics summarizes analyses of the 10 sites. Additionally, specific locations of the sites and the estimated digitized shorelines from LiDAR, from which maximum slope derived edges and buffer areas were created for analysis, are provided in a geodatabase and as individual site shapefiles. Finally a document describing the details of the GIS analysis is provided.

The summary files are: conditio.txt: physical conditions of the creeks sampled during June91, July91, and Jan92. For each month, variables are: creek name, location : (U=upper reach L=lower reach), air temperature (degrees C), water temperature (degrees C),oxygen concentration (mg/L), salinity (ppt) surveys.txt: bacterial parameters and aspects of water quality for three seaside and three bayside tidal marsh creeks during June91, July91, and Jan92.
