<p>We investigate the optical properties of silicon-vacancy (SiV) and germanium-vacancy (GeV) color centers in nanodiamonds under hydrostatic pressure up to 180 GPa. The nanodiamonds were synthetized by Si or Ge-doped plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition and, for our experiment, pressurized in a diamond anvil cell.</p> <p>Data_SiV : replication data for the center wavelength of the photoluminescence of the SiV center as a function of pressure. Evaluation of insecticidal properties of botanicals for sustainable management of sucking pests of horticultural crops
<p>The Bioassay data on the insecticidal properties of botanicals <em>viz</em>., <em>Annona squamosa</em>, <em>Ricinus communis</em> and <em>Sapindus</em> <em>mukorossi</em> seed extracts against sucking pests <em>viz.,</em> aphids (<em>Aphis gossypii, A.craccivora</em>)<em> </em>on okra <em>(Abelmoschus esculentus) </em>and bittergourd (<em>Momordica charantia</em>), thrips (<em>Scirtothrips dorsalis</em>) on chilli (<em>Capsicum frutescens</em>), whiteflies (<em>Bemisia tabaci</em>) on eggplant (<em>Solanum melongena)</em>, mealy bugs (<em>Maconellicoccus hirsutus</em>) on betel vine (<em>Piper betle</em>) and mites (<em>Tetranychus urticae</em>) on egg plant (<em>Solanum melongena) </em>under laboratory conditions.</p>
Viscoelastic properties of suspended cells measured with shear flow deformation cytometry
<p>Numerous cell functions are accompanied by phenotypic changes in viscoelastic properties, and measuring them can help elucidate higher-level cellular functions in health and disease. We present a high-throughput, simple and low-cost microfluidic method for quantitatively measuring the elastic (storage) and viscous (loss) modulus of individual cells. Cells are suspended in a high-viscosity fluid and are pumped with high pressure through a 5.8 cm long and 200 μm wide microfluidic channel. The fluid shear stress induces large, near ellipsoidal cell deformations. In addition, the flow profile in the channel causes the cells to rotate in a tank-treading manner. From the cell deformation and tank treading frequency, we extract the frequency-dependent viscoelastic cell properties based on a theoretical framework developed by R. Roscoe that describes the deformation of a viscoelastic sphere in a viscous fluid under steady laminar flow. We confirm the accuracy of the method using atomic force microscopy-calibrated polyacrylamide beads and cells. Our measurements demonstrate that suspended cells exhibit power-law, soft glassy rheological behavior that is cell cycle-dependent and mediated by the physical interplay between the actin filament and intermediate filament networks.</p>
Dataset related to the publication "New Technique for Probing the Protecting Character of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase as a Critical but Elusive Property for Pursuing Long Cycle Life Lithium-Ion Batteries"
<p>The formation of a protecting nano-layer, so-called Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI), on the negative electrode of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) from product precipitation of the cathodic decomposition of the electrolyte is a blessing since the electrically-insulating nature of this nano-layer protect the electrode surface preventing continuous electrolyte decomposition and enabling the large nominal cell voltage of LIBs, e.g. 3.3 – 3.8 V. Thus, the protecting performance of the nano-layer SEI is essential for LIBs to achieve long cycle life. Unfortunately, evaluation of this critical property of the SEI is not trivial. Herein, a new, cheap and easily-implementable methodology is presented to estimate the protecting quality of the SEI; the redox-mediated enhanced coulometry. The key element of the methodology is the addition of a redox-mediator in the electrolyte during degassing step (after the SEI formation cycle). The redox-mediator leads to an internal self-discharge process that is inversely proportional to the protecting character of the SEI. And the self-discharge process results in an easily-measurable decrease in coulombic efficiency. The influence of vinylene carbonate as electrolyte additive in the resulting SEI is used as case study to showcase the potential of the proposed methodology</p>
Phytoplankton assemblage shifts with dissolved organic matter properties: a functional perspective for sentinel lakes
<p>1. Climate change is altering both dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties and phytoplankton dynamics in lakes. High-altitude lakes are good sentinels of global change. However, their value as sentinels depends on how well we understand their functioning. This study analyzed physical, chemical, and biological data during three pre-defined periods running from complete ice-cover right to the end of the ice-free season, in a high-altitude oligotrophic lake. A functional approach was used to assess how relationships between DOM and the planktonic community vary over time.</p> <p>2. Phytoplankton functional change was found to occur with shifts in dissolved organic matter. During the ice-influenced period, from February to the end of the thaw, the phytoplankton community was dominated by small autotrophs and mixotrophic flagellates and DOM from sediment and terrestrial origin dominated the DOM pool of the lake. Phytoplankton diversity and richness increased during the post-snowmelt overturn period, when terrestrial DOM dominated the DOM pool. Finally, large siliceous autotrophs, competitive under low nitrogen concentrations and high temperature, dominated almost exclusively during the late summer period. Increased phytoplankton biomass meant that phytoplankton-derived DOM was dominant during the late summer period.</p> <p>3. These phenological changes in the phytoplankton community resulted in functional shifts at the base of the food web. Based on the relationships between the variables in the study, it can be deduced that the nature of the relationship between phytoplankton and bacteria progressively shifted from strong top-down control exerted by phytoplankton over bacteria toward predominantly bottom-up control at the end of the ice-free season.</p> <p>4. Synthesis. Using a field survey starting from complete ice-cover and lasting right to the end of the ice-free season in a sentinel lake, we show seasonal shifts in the link between dissolved organic matter properties and plankton community traits. Differences in environmental conditions and DOM origin explained variation in phytoplankton community structure and function, pointing to seasonal shifts in microbial food web interactions. Our research suggests that, under climate change, the balance between mixotrophy and autotrophy and the control exerted by phytoplankton over bacterioplankton will change in oligotrophic high-altitude lakes with large, vegetated catchments. </p>
