Data from: Genetic differences among Cedrela odorata sites in Bolivia provide limited potential for fine-scale timber tracing
Illegal trade of tropical timber leads to biodiversity and economic losses worldwide. There is a need for forensic tools that allow tracing the origin of timber and verifying compliance with international and national regulations. We evaluated the potential for genetic tracing of Cedrela odorata, one of the most traded neotropical timbers, within Bolivia. Using a set of seven microsatellites (SSRs), we studied the spatial distribution and genetic diversity and tested whether populations show sufficient genetic discrimination for timber tracing at a national level. Cambium and leaves were sampled from 81 C. odorata trees from three sites, at 268–501-km distance. To explore genetic differentiation, Bayesian clustering and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed. To infer the origin of samples, we conducted kernel discriminant analysis (KDA) based on a PCA that included all alleles and a manual assessment of site-unique alleles. The PCA showed three distinct genetic clusters, but only one of them corresponded with one of the sampled sites. The KDA based on allele frequency had a 33.7% mean classification error, with a considerably lower error (8.2%) for the site which matched with one genetic cluster. The blind test on unique alleles led to a similar classification error (30%). The occurrence of multiple genetic clusters within sites suggests that Bolivian C. odorata populations contain several parental lines, resulting in limited potential for forensic tracing at a national level. Based on our findings, we recommend for additional sampling across the spatial range of C. odorata within the country to support the development of forensic techniques for this species.

First responders' mobile phone traces during a search-and-rescue exercise scenario
<p>This dataset is collected during a search-and-rescue exercise scenario in the framework of the ARTION project. </p> <p>The operation took place on the 11th of April 2021 in an abandoned village (Vretsia) in Paphos district, in Cyprus. <br> The exercise scenario was the following: After a tornado, seven campers who were in the village at the time of the tornado <br> are reported as missing. Some of them are injured. The operations included: establishment and operation of an emergency <br> operation center, first aid station, and drone operation center.</p> <p>For the search-and-rescue operations two rescue teams, a first responder with a rescue dog and a drone were deployed. <br> 1. The rescue dog detects a person. A lightly injured woman is searched and found. The medic team rushes to help <br> and finally accompanies the person to the operation center/first aid station. <br> 2. A victim is identified by the drone and rescued by the Medic Team.<br> 3. The Rescue Team #1 founds an unconscious male and the Medic Team rushes to the rescue. <br> 4. The Rescue Team #2 founds an injured female person and the Medic Team rushes to the rescue.<br> 5. Another person is identified by the drone and rescued by the Medic Team.<br> 6. The Rescue Team #1 founds a lightly injured female person and accompanies her to the first aid station. <br> 7. The Rescue Team #2 founds a lightly injured female person and accompanies her to the first aid station. </p> <p>The exercise was organized and conducted by the Cyprus Civil Defence and data collection was performed by the <br> KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus.</p> <p>The dataset consists of .csv files, each containing a trace, that is, the locations of the mobile phones captured by the built-in<br> GPS receiver of the phone approximately every one second. The mobile phones were held by first responders during their operation. </p>
Following the Lithium: Tracing Li-bearing Molecules across Age, Mass, and Gravity in Brown Dwarfs
<p>Lithium is an important element for the understanding of ultracool dwarfs because it is lost to fusion at masses above ∼68MJ. Hence, the presence of atomic Li has served as an indicator of the nearby H-burning boundary at about 75MJ between brown dwarfs and very low mass stars. Historically, the “lithium test,” a search for the presence of the Li line at 670.8 nm, has been a marker if an object has a substellar mass. While the Li test could, in principle, be used to distinguish masses of later-type L–T dwarfs, Li is predominantly no longer found as an atomic gas but rather a molecular species such as LiH, LiF, LiOH, and LiCl in cooler atmospheres. The L- and T-type dwarfs are quite faint at 670 nm and thus challenging targets for high-resolution spectroscopy. But only recently have experimental molecular line lists become available for the molecular Li species, allowing molecular Li mass discrimination. Here we generated the latest opacity of these Li-bearing molecules and performed a thermochemical equilibrium atmospheric composition calculation of their abundances. Finally, we computed thermal emission spectra for a series of radiative–convective equilibrium models of cloudy and cloudless brown dwarf atmospheres (with Teff = 500–2400 K and log g = 4.0–5.0) to understand where the presence of atmospheric lithium-bearing species is most easily detected as a function of brown dwarf mass and age. After atomic Li, the best spectral signatures were found to be LiF at 10.5–12.5 μm and LiCl at 14.5–18.5 μm. Also, LiH shows a narrow feature at ∼9.38 μm.</p>
Can volcanic trace elements facilitate Covid-19 diffusion? A hypothesis stemming from the Mount Etna area, Sicily
<p>In December 2019, severe cases of pneumonia of unknown aetiology were reported in Wuhan city, in China. Lately, the pneumonia was related to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the diseases was termed coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). At the end of January 2020, the infection spread all over Italy, but with high infection rates and mortality in the northern part, especially in Lombardy, the most industrialized and polluted region of the country. It is noteworthy that a strong association between severe viral respiratory disease and air pollution has been described. Air pollutant could be solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases and can be of natural origin (such as ash from a volcanic eruption) or released from motor vehicle depletes (carbon monoxide gas) or factories (sulfur dioxide). Volcanic eruptions release large amounts of sulphuric acid, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrochloric acid into the atmosphere. Pulmunary diseases spreadby means of small droplets in thebreath, also called aerosols, and air pollution may facilitate the outside survival of viruses. We suppose that ash and gases emitted from the Mount Etna contributed to air pollution, potentially favouring the major contagion of COVID-19 in the eastern flank of the mountain, as in Catania city. In fact, ash and gases (with regard to radon) are usually particularly intense in winter, with a reduction of emission of specific metals with warmer weather. This is the first paper that elaborates the hypothesis of a potential role of volcanic gases and heavy metals-related air pollution, combined to specific climatic conditions and regional topography, in favouring severe COVID-19 diffusion in Sicily. Clinical and epidemiological studies are needed to support the hypothesis and plan the due prevention and awareness-raising campaigns.</p>
Experimental variation in the spatial deposition of trace metals in feathers revealed using synchrotron x-ray fluorescence
<p>Feathers can be used to investigate exposure to pollution in birds because they are a secondary route for the excretion of trace elements. Evidence based on analytical imaging and spectroscopy suggests that the spatial distribution of the essential trace element zinc within feathers is related to melanin pigmentation. However, our understanding of how trace elements are deposited into growing feathers is poor and has been hampered by a lack of analytical tools to examine the localization of trace elements within a feather. Here, synchrotron micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to map zinc directly within the barb and barbules of lesser scaup (<em>Aythya affinis</em>) feathers grown after experimental increases in dietary zinc. The results showed distinct spatial variation in zinc within barbs and barbules, with higher levels observed in the latter. Furthermore, increases in dietary zinc were found to increase the relative levels of zinc throughout the barbules from the base to the tip of the feather. Finally, analysis of feather cross sections revealed that regions of the feather barb and barbules with higher melanosome density also contained higher levels of zinc. These results provide a more detailed understanding of zinc and melanosome arrangement within the feather barb and barbules. Moreover, these results provide further support for the use of feathers as a noninvasive tool to study exposure to trace elements and highlight the utility of X-ray spectroscopy in studies investigating impacts of a rapidly changing environment on<br> wild bird health. </p>

Abstraction-based Trace Generation to Validate Semantics of Formal Verifiers: Validation Model Suite
<p>Dataset of the Scientific Students’ Association Report titled Abstraction-based Trace Generation to Validate Semantics of Formal Verifiers.</p> <p>These files contain the validation model test suite and the generated traces. It results from an experiment that runs a firmware on a set of representative nodes that have to exchange packets in a broadcast mode using the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 MAC layer and RPL routing protocol. Each application produces data according to 1 of the 3 following modes: periodic (Tx nodes produce data every x milliseconds), event based (modeled with an exponential law with occurrence rate lambda) and hybrid (combination of the two previous modes).</p> <p>Each application has the following parameters :<br> - Surveillance has 10 sensors and 3 routers that exchange packets with a length of 127B. The generation type is exponential with a lambda of 196.74.<br> - Emergency Response has 40 sensors and 5 routers that exchange packets with a length of 127B. The generation type is hybrid with a lambda of 0.03 and a period of 30 seconds.<br> - HVAC has 100 sensors and 5 routers that exchange packets with a length of 60B.
